Big shout out to my people in the back doing all the labor work in the hot sun ,rain ,or fires and now even during pandemic working class people never stop working.
Wish when you guys showed these, you do like you did in the old days, show the workers and their families enjoying their jobs and family connection to the company. Watermelon looks great
I was born, raised and live in Portland Oregon. I can attest to how delicious Hermiston Oregon watermelons are and how much they are loved here. So good. It's funny because I was just thinking I should pick one up at the store today and I think this story is a sign that I absolutely have to today.
One stightly yellow side is the way I pick them, plus no soft spots. And I remember some great times with my family eating watermelon as a kid watermelons amazing
@Marco Deo Most watermelons will have a produce sticker on them showing where they are grown or even the large container they are shipped in should say it on the side. You can ask your grocery store or fruit stand where they get their watermelons from, I usually get mine from fruit stands in our area. I live in Western Idaho so we are close to Hermiston and they always seem to make their way to our area. Western Idaho has very similar climate so we can grow them just as tasty here. 🍉
Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho are very similar in growing conditions. Hot summer days with cool nights are excellent for growing many fruits. Consistent watering is key and cutting the water off to your watermelons up to a week or so before picking concentrates the flavor and sugars.
I grew up in rural Oklahoma on a farm. Besides the peanuts and cotton we raised, we always raised watermelons. To grow good melons you need sandy soil, plenty of rain, hot days, and cooler nights. My uncle used to grow truck patches of varies kinds of watermelons and cantaloupe. He would plant ten acres, and among them was every size, shape, and color. Some were large red meated melons with a dark green skin called Black Diamonds others were long grey color skinned melons with red meat called Charleston Greys. There were round white skinned melons with both red and orange meat. There has been many years past and the names of all but a few of the melons have left me. The one thing from my youth that I still retain is how to thump a melon to tell if it is ripe. There are ways to tell on the vine, but now they pick all melons without checking them. It helps to know a green one from one that was left on the vine too long. Like the man in the story says if the melon has a thud and no ring it will not be good because it will be over ripe. If it has a good ring when you thump, or slap the melon it is good. With time and practice, you can hone your skill to pick very good melons. It is hard to pick them when they are stacked in a pile. I always lay the melon down, away from anything else to check. You cannot always ask the person selling the melons to pick you out a good one. My uncle used to thump every melon before it was picked and very, very few were brought back. When they were, he gladly gave them another one. He was always at the same place so people could always find him. I hope my tips help you. I always see people who want help when buying a melon. Happy watermelon eating and stay safe everyone.
The segment did not even mention the nutritional value. Watermelon is on many lists of the foods that are best for you. It was a revelation to me and your viewers would have been enlightened.
Summer equivalent of comfort food ! I like that. So true. We could use some Oregon watermelon where we’re living in the south. Watermelon hasn’t been very good this year. Downright disappointing to be honest. Even the ones from the farmers market which they had the nerve to charge $7 for & we ended up throwing away!
I used to enjoy watermelon 🍉 with my grandma Nana😊 I can't eat a watermelon 🍉 without the seeds. It takes out the joy of spitting out the seeds😀 Wow. Japan 🇯🇵is such a cool nation. Square🍉
Hard to find good tasting melons in the grocery store. In fact fruit in general is not great in the stores. Too bad. Bought a cantaloupe the other day and had very little flavor.
Put the cantaloupe in a paper grocery bag and roll it up. Keep it at room temperature to speed up the ripening/flavor. Faster? Put an apple or banana in the paper bag along with the cantaloupe.
Wow you did an entire segment on watermelon and didn't even acknowledge the Latino farm workers sacrificing their lives during a pandemic. Shame on you guys. So disappointing.
How to have a segment on watermelons and not mention Harry Styles??? Watermelon Sugar was the number one song in USA and his music video is basically him eating a watermelon! It is the song of the summer!
The last sound bite was great because CBS doesn't take journalism serious and laughing at it was so truthful.... CBS is trash 🗑 even though I like watermelon 🍉

Nothing better than fresh watermelon, corn on the cob, and ripe tomatoes. Best part of summer.
I have grown up eating Hermiston watermelons my whole life. There really is a difference in the flavor compared to others. They are amazing! 💗🍉🍉🍉

That town is tiny, and watermelon is all the same depending on strain of watermelon.. they just use the same cut as others.
Look for the sticker "Hermiston" on the melon. Hermistons are da bomb.
Hermiston watermelons are the best!

I’m sure the watermelons taste great. I hope that they treat their farm workers well. That’s equally important.
From what I heard from a former worker here in So-Cal it's minimum wage.
You can get better watermelon at a farmers market.
Love my local Farmers Market
As a kid loved watermelon and the yummy seeds. I hate it now with no seeds. Not the same.
🍉🍉🍉 Watermelon really is a happy fruit! 🍉🍉🍉
Quarantine getting you down? Slice a watermelon and bury your head in it... it’s like an adventure! NOT FOR KIDS!!!

Just had a slice, but it wasn’t sweet, Don’t know why?

The existence of happy fruit implies the existence of sad fruit.
