In Part 2 of this mega head-to-head shootout, we head to the full circle for a hot lap race between these two very special cars.
The Bimmer is certainly the underdog here, with less power but less weight. And while the Mercedes Benz battled to get off the line in the drag race, it's huge power will certainly help it here at the Killarney circuit, a track which does favour more horsepower, given the two very long straights and fast, sweeping corners.

The M4 ultimately is based on a 5 seating road car. The GTR was built ultimately to take on the world's supercars. In some magazine tests, the GTR beat out even the mighty Ferrari 488 GTB. There was zero chance that that BMW could keep up in anyway.
Yeah, that's why it's amazing that BMW was able to bring a 4 series up to the level of merc's purpose-built performance car.
2.6 seconds on a short lap is a world's difference. That being said, the AMG is still very livable every day, but the BMW here... they've thrown out everything that makes it daily usable in the pursuit of speed.

I wouldn't ever buy M4 DTM, it's just waste of money. Getting a competition M4 is much smarter since they are basically from the same platform. The initial design is just not for a track but mix of track and street. I'll definitely get the AMG GTR

You should have done 2 laps for each car in a row - 1st lap with standing start, 2nd as a flying lap (which is much closer to track days reality). I guess the time difference would be less in the 2nd lap.

An AMG GTR costs 2.7m rand? thats equivalent to 280k aud. The AMG costs 350k in aus not incl. on road costs. WOW I need to live in south africa

jojajo2707 dude i accept that the BMW lost but it was already obvious. You could assume from the beginning which car will win, but You gotta admit that the BMW Performed well competing a supercar. The gtr was Overall better except Weight which made no difference because of it's much more HP. The MB is a super car And the BMW just a Sports car, no one Said that the m4 is a supercar.
I mean considering the M4 DTM is a based on it's daily sports car base model counterpart, it did exceptionally well keeping pace with what the AMG GTR which is genuinely considered a supercar.
I expected this to be closer, but this video just proves my point. That the best BMW M car, is nowhere near as good as what Mercedes Benz AMG are doing "currently". Like Chris Harris said.. " BMW must try harder". They just not as good as they use to be.

This M4 DTM (a reskinned M4 GTS) isn't meant to be in the same league as the AMG which is why it has a 100hp less. If BMW made a M6 GTS it'll be closer, etc.
The M4 is just a modified 4 series luxury cruiser while the AMG is a purpose-built performance car designed from the ground up to be a performer. Yet the AMG barely beat the M4. And by the way, for all the direct-rival AMG vs ///M comparisons, ///M wins everytime. Now I just want BMW to make a purpose-built sports car to rival the current offerings on the market from mercedes and porsche.
The AMG GTS is not a luxury cruiser. Are you saying that the AMG GTS is the same as a 3 series? The 4 series is just the coupe version of the 3 series. The AMG GTS was purpose-built to be a performance machine. It's low and wide and has the aerodynamics of a supercar, it's also alot more powerful with a 4.0L V8 compared to the M4's 3.0L i6. The 420i is narrow and tall to allow for comfortable commute to and from the corporate office, with very little aero and a smaller base engine. Your attempt to claim that the AMG GTS is the same as a 420i just shows how dishonest you are.
Hopefully BMW will make a purpose-built performance car soon, and when they finally do, I guarantee it will be a game changer. It will be worth the wait... guaranteed!

I AM TALKING ABOUT A 3 SERIES, that's the class I'm referring to. Let me repeat, it was not created on a performance platform, it was created on a luxury/sport-cruiser platform. Then M-division made a high performance version that quite frankly boggles the mind for the type of car that it is. Are you one of those people who denies the performance of a car that does 7:28 on the nurbergring?
I'll give you this though... the price might be a bit high. But the engineering that went into transforming the 4 series platform into this, is pretty amazing.
Both are very good car but for my a BMW M4 is a very fast coupé and the AMG GTR a very fast Sportcar
Unfair comparison. You're comparing a supercar (that's been made to take on the best supercars in the world) against a tuned, special version of a sport coupe.
BMW doesn't have a rival for the AMG GTR which makes this comparison absolutely pointless.
You said it yourself, BMW doesn't have any model that rivals the AMG GTR, so the most competent contender from BMW, in this case, is the track-focused M4.

Actually not a bad result for the BMW considering the Merc is a purpose-built sports car with a much lower CoG, no rear passenger space and an FMR engine layout.

You should of done the test of the AMG GTR vs 991.2 GT3 way more interesting and fair. At the end of the day the BMW is based on a standard 3 series chassis (320i) whilst the AMG is based of the GT which is a brilliant car already, so what BMW have done to get the car which what they had is impressive but still no match for the AMG, which is beastly

I don't think they should be compared IMO. The M4 DTM is just a normal M4 on steriods whilst the GTR is a hardcore track monster from birth. It should be competing with the GT3 RS.

The M8 has way more power to make up for the weight and the lap time is officially faster than a GTS on the Nurburgring the BMW M CEO has stated. BMW M8 0-60 0-124 0-189 is way faster than a M4 GTS, the M8 and M4 GTS is incomparable. The quarter mile is already in the 10s. It’s basically a Real super car performance wise

A difference in 3 seconds for a car that has almost 100 less horse power, and lower bottom end torque because it's a V6 vs. V8 isn't bad.
An E92 M3 built by FV engineering could wipe the floor with that GTR, and it's still cheeper and sounds better.

We use the metric system in South Africa, therefore, it is 38 degree Celsius not Fahrenheit (it should be around 100 degree Fahrenhiet if my math is correct).

Not a good comparison. The two cars are not in the same league. BMW never intended building the M4 DTM to compete with supercars. A more appropriate comparison is to a C63S which the M4 beat

You mean a BMW car that can compete against the Project One (new bench mark for AMG), if not keep on hoping/wishing. But, if I were you, I would accept that AMG is starting to take aim at Porsche whilst the M-division seems not bet interested to engage at that level. As result, the ultimate road going AMG will in all likelihood be faster then the ultimate M-car.
No, I meant something similar to the AMG GTS and GTR. I also want BMW to make a supercar or a hypercar for that matter. But I know for a fact that any day BMW finally decides to make a supercar, it is going to be an incredible thing to behold. Rumor has it the next M6 will be a Porsche rival. Chima Chinda ... Fair enough, but the driver did say if he had more time with the M4 he could have gone much faster. I've heard other professional drivers say the same thing about the M4 and I believe this car is capable of a better laptime. The M4 GTS has a 7:28 nurbergring laptime with a BMW professional driver, that's faster than alot of supercars. It's amazing for what is effectively a 4 series.
jamviator fair enough. but ever since the E46 M3, I get the sense that the M-division is playing catch up rather then sitting the tone. Til to this day, I do not think there is a naturally aspirated car(3.5 litre or less) in that category that can keep up with the E46 M3 but the same can't be said about the current M4/M3 (even Cadillac CTS V seems to better driving car).

Latvietis96 yeah but ive driven an M4 and it is a disappointing road car. it's way too twitchy on bumps. not impressed at all.the synthetic engine was the worst part. I skipped on the M3 as a result. it's a great track car but I'm still looking for that one person that has bought an M3/ M4 just for the track... most people buy cars for daily driving. That's where audi is the most comfortable and the 4.0 litre AMGs are the most entertaining. BMW need a rethink. they are still the lightest and most agile around corners but the competition are now virtually as good and offer a lot of other useful advantages that at least the current M3/4 don't

Try the cla 45 amg against the m2, on a track and straight line, the m2 stands no chance. Try the c63 against the m3 in a straight line, the c63 will walk the m3. Try the e63 against the m5 both are actually too close to call one better.
Bmw doesn't own the market anymore, for the past 3 years, mercedes has been selling more cars than bmw, showing us how devoted mercedes is to creat the ultimate brand.

The times are not truly representative of the Bmw’s abilities. The DTM is fully adjustable for track and it appears all Ash did was jump in and drive.
The real magic in either the DTM or GTS is the difference the fine tuning does to lap times.
I’m sorry but what’s the point of doing a comparison when by your own admission the Bmw had worn tyres?
Why couldn’t you ask the manufacturer to set the car optimally for you and supply you with a fresh set of tyres?
I won’t criticize the driving ability as I don’t know enough about the driver but I assume he knows what he is doing.
That said, why can’t you guys invest in more cameras? This is pathetic. A one-dimensional view in the age of go-pro’s? There should be a camera for the exhaust, the front, two interior cams and fixed cameras around the track. If Chris Harris can do it, so can you. You’re letting SA down. We have a world class racing heritage with an ex Formula 1 world champ (Ferrari!) in our midst. Why not produce a world class video?
You speak of counter-steer but all we see is the hands of Ashley not the tyres or the attitude of the car as it enters the corner.
