You story in racing parallels mine in ways. I didn’t have money/sponsors to bring but I managed to lap some Formula Atlantic cars while I was driving a worn out beat up Formula Vee that just managed to sneak through tech.
Managed to finish with the lead lap.
This caught the attention of one of the FA teams and the manager/owner came to my pit. He introduced himself and then spent a good 10 minutes looking over my borrowed Formula Vee. He rhetorically asked “You made those laps in this?”
We had a conversation and he determined that my style was too aggressive for the FA series “One race and they already hate you” referring to the other FA drivers, but he figured I would do well in F3. We set up regular , track days where I drove a spare FA car and a vintage F5000 car and they set me up with a personal trainer and all that other stuff you talked about. I truly thought this was it my big shot. They even sent out professional photographers to do photo shoots for promotional material. Then marketing people got involved and it fell apart. I guess I wasn’t Brad Pitt enough lol.
This was early 90s so the game hasn’t changed and I actually believe it has gotten worse.

And there was no way for me to move there because of family obligations at the time.
Found out later that his business partner was a bit of a scammer, and had stolen a car and some of his tools. That gentleman who i still know today has been trying to recover from that horrible experience for last 20 year's.

When I was 17 or 18 back in the mid-90's I was working for a car wholesaler delivering cars around the state. It wasn't anything special but I got to drive a bunch of different cars and had quickly developed the reputation of getting them where they needed to be quickly and safely.
On one particular day I got to bring a Mercedes 450SL to a new customer. When I pulled into the parking lot I saw a semi trailer and truck custom painted with a NASCAR-type racecar on the side. It was beautiful! I met the owner and handed him his new keys and complimented him on his purchase. I told him that it was my first time driving one and that I had enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
My dreams of being a race driver soon came up in our conversation and I jokingly told him he should sponsor me, the next thing I knew I was being offered a 3 year full ride to race in the Skip Barber Dodge open wheel class! When I say "full ride", I mean "FULL ride"! He told me that he would cover 100% of all the costs, including a small salary for me to live on. He said that I would have 3 years to win a race and if I didn't I was done. He said I could crash every race and he'd have my back, but I had to win a race within the initial 3 years. There was only one catch, I had to supply the truck to pull the car and trailer. He didn't care what it looked like as long as it got me to the races. He would supply the car, the trailer, the parts, the team, the money... EVERYTHING, but I had to prove my dedication by getting a truck! He told me that I fit the profile they were looking for and that my attitude and ability to walk into a room and ask a stranger for a race car showed him a lot.
The only problem? I had been kicked out high school and DEFINITELY couldn't afford a truck. I told him as much and he told me that the offer would be on the table for as long as he could afford it. He told me to take the time I needed to earn the cash and buy a truck and then get back to him. According to him he owned one of the largest ice distribution companies in the country, and would for the foreseeable future.
He gave me some paperwork explaining the Skip Barber Dodge series and his business card and told me to hurry up and get a truck so we could go racing.
I ended up having to leave the city and went to go work various jobs to earn money for the truck in a smaller city in the mountains. Within a year or so I found out that I had the ability to race mountain bikes and fight in MMA or boxing at high levels and my future was very bright. I couldn't get my shit together though so I went to a Marine recruiter and scored high enough on the pre-ASVAB to fly aircraft. The only lifelong dream I had that compared to racing was flying jets and I had the opportunity to try to do so. I called up my sponsor and told him that I was sorry but I wanted to try to go fly instead of racing. He said he would too if he had the chance and to call him when I retired or got out if I still wanted to go racing. He said the offer would remain on the table. I thanked him for keeping my dream alive and promised him that I would get back to him.
I was 6 months away from boot camp and was working as performance driving instructor that I had went to school all summer to learn to do when a 14yr old kid ran me over with his mom's Taurus station wagon going about 45mph. He hit me dead on and knocked me two houses away. One of the nerves in my left leg was crushed and my shoulder was ripped apart, but other than that and a major concussion I was alright, or so I thought. I called the sponsor and told him what happened. He told me that if I ever felt like I could get into a car he would find a doctor to clear me and that even though the race series was gone he would put me into whatever kind of car I wanted to race.
Cut to 20 years later and I'm still in agonizing pain every day and can't do anything I want to do and barely anything I need to do. I spend all day, every day, in pain. The kids that ran me over came from a really rich family and bought their way out of trouble, while simultaneously screwing me over with the insurance company. I ended up with all of mydreams and my body broken and a settlement of only $16,000 to cover new for the rest of my life. Greg still said the offer is on the table, but the last time I tried to get into a race car for a picture I dislocated a rib. There's no way I could take the pressure of racing on my body, not to mention I'm not even close to being in good enough physical shape anymore.
I too know what it's like to try to erase bad memories from my mind. It isn't working too well. I'm stuck in a nightmare and instead of racing cars or flying jets I might not even ever be able to ride in my dream cars, let alone own them. I've dreamed about riding in a 911 Turbo or a Lamborghini as long as I can remember and it kills me to know I most likely never will. I would do just about anything to drive a supercar or ride in a jet!

I discovered this when my father was IMSA racing in the 90's. Honestly it made me very jaded. It wasn't that konica minolta wanted to sponsor that 962. It was that the drivers dad had the distribution rights for konica minoltas in brazil... All the sponsors were all powered by daddy type arrangements. This is why I've never understood racing series like the "ferrari challenge" where's its all the cost of a major GP team but with the speed of SCCA IT racing. Just rich 50 year old dudes renting rides trying to look good to some 35 year old has been stripper.

Yeah, it's very difficult to explain to people that many 'sponsors' aren't.. They are just brand names individually held by a franchisee; even all the way up to Penske. Now, Penske's not a scam artist, but he doesn't have Shell 'sponsorship' for his racing cars, it's just part of a huge B2B deal across the dealership network and truck rental company (when the deal was signed).
Just like the 'Burger King' sponsorship in NASCAR, KFC in WEC/F2 - yet people would reasonably assume that companies like KonicaMinolta, Lavazza, Shell, KFC, Burger King would be just straightforward 'money over the counter' sponsors, but it doesn't work like that.

I particularly like the part of your story on the beach: you knew the right thing to do, but you really had to wrestle all those thoughts of what you might be missing. but the reality is you knew what you should do.
I think we all go through that at times. Great way to use your experiences to help other people make good choices.
In my own life, I've adopted the phrase, "liars lie!"
I hope people hear and remember that phrase. Again: LIARS LIE!
You've been warned, I hope anyone hears that and holds onto it.
And it's so much more true than i thought it was before a couple years ago.
I've recently been helping a friend who had an ex trying to set him up and attack him. It was hard for him to see, because he was too emotionally involved, but she kept lying to him. At the point when you know the other person is a liar by habit, you know that you can stop emotionally investing in what they say. 95% of it won't be true, and the last 5% is there to manipulate you! I'd have to walk him though each time, hey, does she tell the truth? no? ok, then do you believe her when she said this? No? OK, then you don't need to put yourself through the strain of worrying about what she said this time.
    Where i learned this:
My own experience was a few years ago, with a roommate that i thought was a nice and good guy. But he had a habit of planning "little social lies" like tricking people that he was color blind (when he wasn't), or hiding their phone at a restaurant and giving them a runaround to get it back, just for the fun of it.
Fast forward 1 year. He is pretending to be friendly, but over the course of a year I find that he is intentionally defrauding one of my friends, manipulating her to break her own strong personal values, and (sexual predator behavior) tying her emotionally to him while it tears her apart, but she can't emotionally leave. While pretending to be my friend, he was actually secretly tearing me down with false accusations to my friends and to her as a long term plan. When the time came, no one would believe me, so instead of protecting her, they cast me out and protected the predator, despite that many of them actually knew he had a habit of lying!
Incredible, but i share this to warn people:
    LIARS LIE!
remember that and save yourself from bad business deals and bad relationships. They really aren't worth the horrible situations they will bring (oh yeah, i didn't tell you about they false legal actions people attempted to bring against me, and people coming into court and the judge asking them questions and their admitting they lied on official government documents to try to attack me, for nothing! Nothing to gain at all, just attack)

One last comment/story: It's not too late to recover your integrity!
I was in a business class (not my profession, but when you have a successful person offer expensive training as a friend). One of the 1st steps was write out your own personal values,
with the mindset that we all start out with something personal in mind, before we enter business.
The we wrote out out business values and were asked a question. "If you were your employee, would you fire you for failure to follow your business values?"
ouch. and great question. I had been wresting over "needing" to use pirated software for my quasi business. It was an unthinkable amount of work to find and learn how to use some other software (note: emotional decision).
When i thought about it, the amount of trouble an employee doing so could get my company in, the loss of integrity for our business - it was a no-brainer.
Suddenly, a question i spent years avoiding facing and having to sidestep my own moral thoughts became crystal clear!
      I would have fired myself!
I went home and uninstalled the software (no more excuses). I refused to allow myself to reinstall it, so i spent 2 days and found an alternative solution. Integrity regained. I could now feel good about showing someone else how I do my work.
The avoidance was more taxing than the solution (but fear...) So free now!

As an American who went to Europe to race (but in cycling) the parallels are very similar in many ways. So many sleazy business people and stories. My first pro team had a total fake Italian high end car dealer as a main sponsor ... Afin.com was the name, but had NO real info on it anywhere ... it was SOOO shady.

Casey, I'd say you were very lucky you found out about him so early on in the con. If he'd had a little more working capital and a little more finesse, he could have drawn you so far into the game, that getting out would have been far stickier. Your tale of sponsorship and pre-placement reminds me of other avenues in the entertainment business. Again, talent is not always a pre-requisite.

    ETHOS.
The reason I watch this channel and Casey. He lives by a code of ethos - something everyone should do, or try to achieve. It’ll make you a better person and make for a better society.
This video was a good example of it and his ethos kept him out of being dragged into a lawsuit and criminal investigation for fraud etc. So it’s not just walking the line you define and sticking to it - regardless of the situation. The harder it is as you stick by them, is what truly defines you as a perosn. Like giving up a full ride / sponsorship.
I have my own I live by and a lot of the core ones over lap Caseys.
From the volunteering to exposing the corruption of the Peterson Museum. Not only spot on, but pointed out all the angles in which they are purely self serving, even in their “learning programs”. I can attest to discussion on that video. As I have 2 friends with half a dozen cars each being held there. Been able to drive most of them (everything from. A 67 or 68 , I forget, wanna say 67.... Shelby GT500KR to classic Ferrari’s etc). Tangent - the KR for ex example.. looks great. Drives like a heap of junk. Just the tech of the era. The first racing seat went to maybe my shoulders. Wheel the size of a semi. Lol. Anyhow. Realize I like new cars. ;) or old cars sitting on new car chassis. I digress.
However, one of the two folks who had cars there (few million $$ collection). Yanked them out after looking into their structure and practices, saying I want nothing to do with this group, the only charity here, their pockets. Penned a well crafted but scathing letter to the board.
Listen to Casey. He’s a smart guy and a great set of ethos he lives by. He’s just trying to educate you. To let you know what the real world is actually like.
I assuming most of his subscribers are under 30 years old, Given how he approaches these discussions. Listen. He’s giving you a great heads up. I don’t see many of other car channels doing this on any basis, never mind a frequent one.
Find your ethos and you’ll find who you are. Quickest way to success as you are going forward.
What are some examples of ethos to live by:
    Here’s one example :
    The strong protect the weak.
That doesn’t just mean in a fight or the like. Say you see an obvious injustice being done and you know you can help it you step in on his/her behalf. Yet now you’re involved.
The choice you make from that point will define the ethos you actually live by / vs the nifty list out together. Yet if when the rough get tougher ... is what defines them. The difficult choices, the path of least resistance vs the right one, etc.
Yet, as I noted above, once you actually find the ethos you truly live by and standby to the day they put you 6 feet under, will be what defines you and your life as a person.
Figure it out and see if you’re OK with what that story looks like if it were a movie playback, would you be happy with the main character in the storyline?
That’s up to you. Mine have been tested at levels many will never come close to experiencing (not ballyhooing myself, just the situation is not common, unless playing at the highest levels of tech and law.)
...and I truly pray you don’t, and mean it. Yet, it was my ethos that allowed me to continue to drive forward and in the end still be able to proudly look myself in the mirror. The cost was tremendous but you have to draw the line somewhere - or it bends and bends and next thing, you’re in vicious cycle you were trying to avoid.
Anyhow, keep up the good work Casey.
    Best,
    D

That was a good one , from multiple angles. I don't know if this helps but I don't think situation would have made it very far even if you had done what he wanted. With one of the key members having a hidden agenda and likely not really caring much about the actual racing part. He probably would have disappeared with all the money the moment he had a chance. Or bailed when people started figuring it out.

Very topical and interesting story, especially considering the last few years of dodgy sponsors in F1. Many F1 fans will initially expect this to be a Rich Energy video.
Giedo "Banter" Garde had a fair shot in F1 but was supposedly done dirty in the end as Sauber dropped him at the start 2015. It ended up in a rather weird court battle to keep his seat this he, his management company and lawers felt entitled to. It was settled in the end and he lost his seat.

People talk a lot about Niki. Well, you know, he almost singlehandedly got Europeans smoking Marlboro Cigarettes, and I don't think he ever smoked himself. After the accident, people realized that there was nobody tougher than Niki, so his image alone sold a product that was very bad. And it was a product that he himself, did not believe in.
