    To be honest I think the normal docking stations are better to us. After I watched your videos I decided to buy a T440 and I'm quite happy with it. Thank you for your reviews.

    Got the OneLink Dock Pro a few days ago. Extending the life of my E460 for a few more years. It was like owning a new laptop experience again!

    I still prefer the Docking Stations that you can make ThinkPads sit in, it gives the laptop a solid base to sit on, has all connectors on the back and charges them of course as well.
    On the downside, I can't use the dock I have for my T420 with my X240 and I honestly have a hard time deciding whether I shall upgrade to a T440p and its dock just to have the same parts and chargers for both or if I shall just call it a day and keep things rolling as is since even the T480 these days still uses a 2c/4t CPU for the most part and there isn't probably a lot of improvement for casual use cases like web browsing, music consumption, photo editing and maybe very lightweight gaming.

      Those docks are classic, but their one downside is they aren't as portable. I think they are best suited for people in offices whereas stuff like the OneLink cables are more mobile and come in many different configurations to meet the needs of the user. Now we have USB-C/Thunderbolt 3.

    As an avid follower to your content, I’d like to ask: is there any chance that you could re-record the first part of the video?
    I own one T430, an x230 and an x220 running both Windows 10 and Manjaro Linux, and couldn’t be happier with them. All thanks to your channel.
    More detailed info about the Onelink specs will be great for future upgrades.
    Anyway, excellent content as always. Thanks a lot for your videos

      I thought about trying to recover or re-record but I don't have all the devices in house anymore. It was only a short piece of introductory material and the specs of the first dock. It was easier wait for the next chance or releasing as is. I felt that there wasn't enough missing to warrant having you folks wait. I hope that makes sense and I'm glad I've been able to help you out! It sounds like you've got a great collection.

    There are to Versions of the usb 3.0 dock in this form factor (yes, they are also newer ones). The one that is not shown in the Video has to DVI and 5 usb 3.0 ports. You will need to install the displaylink drivers to get the monitor working.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 года назад

      Correct. The Basic one is featured, not the USB Pro. There is also a OneLink Pro+ dock for this generation.

    Been using this dock for years at the office. Primarily using wifi connection. Now at the home office, want to use the LAN connection but it does not seem to work through the dock. Have you seen this problem before, is there a quick fix? I've looked through my settings, but nothing obvious is incorrect.

    PLEASE HELP! I have one of these dock station, and the charging cable, however I sold my laptop in the meanwhile.. I'd like to sell also the dock and cable but I'm not sure if they are still working. There's no light appearing on the dock, DOES IT MEAN THAT IT'S NOT WORKING? Or the light only goes on once you connect a device/laptop? Really really thanks for anyone who can answer.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  2 года назад +1

      Hmmm. Trying to remember if there is a standby light on them or not. If you don't get a definite answer here or the manual PDF which I'm sure you can find online, just sell it being honest that you can't test if it still works.

    Thanks for this helpful video! I have an X1 Carbon, 3rd gen. My power connector is loose so I thought I could use a OneLink dock to power it instead. After this video, I'm thinking it may not work since the OneLink Port is part of the power connector too.
    Do you know if any other OneLink port would work via a USB connection instead to power the laptop? Thanks!

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 года назад +1

      Not 100% sure I understand your question, but there does not exist a OneLink cable that just does the USB part and not the power as far as I know. If your connector is loose, it wouldn't be too much trouble to resolder or just replace, just the removal of the motherboard and checking those contacts. Very doable even if you don't have a lot of experience.

    • @ytfamily000

       @Laptop Retrospective Sorry if I was unclear. I was trying to ask if a OneLink dock exists with an alterative connector, like HDMI or USB, instead of the OneLink connector.
      Looking at replacing the connector as a last option since I read that the 3rd gen is a hassle to open up and change the part, unlike older versions. Thanks for the quick reply!

    • @LaptopRetrospective

      The first dock in the video runs off of USB 3 Super speed, so that would do the trick (IF it has any SS ports, I cannot remember), or any other USB 3 dock. Gaining access to the connetor isn't that bad. Depending on how it is loose, removal might not be needed. Check out the HWW to see what's involved and you can decide for yourself.

    The concern with having the laptop running with the lid closed is heat dissipation. I would think that when open, a good bit of the heat would rise through the keyboard. Or maybe I'm paranoid.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 года назад +2

      Regular laptops perhaps. ThinkPads are designed to run with these docks in desk environments. I'd trust them over something consumer grade.

    • @pixelPlex
      @pixelPlex 4 года назад +2

      Many consumer laptops (including Macbooks, and Macbook Pros) have a vent near the keyboard where the hot air is pushed up along the display (when the lid is open). Wouldn't do the display much good being exposed to the hot air. Even the ThinkPad E's have the same vent system.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 года назад +2

      @@pixelPlex Many of the business grade machines vent out the side.

    • @pixelPlex
      @pixelPlex 4 года назад +1

      @@LaptopRetrospective Some consumer laptops use the same vent system, especially the Toshiba Satellite's, and Satellite Pro's.

    • @LaptopRetrospective

      @@pixelPlex Correct, but not many. It is easier to vent the heat as you described since it naturally moves upward anyway.
