Going to university in less than 2 months and up until now I was using a 12 year old desktop. Had a pretty tight budget, so I couldn't get the ThinkPad T480. Your video hit the mark showing USB-C does everything. Typing this on my laptop using the docking station with dual monitors. Not alot of fluff in your video, straight to the point, thanks man.
Awesome! So glad I could help. Yes, you don’t always get awesome documentation with this stuff so I wanted to share my experience in the hope that hat it would help others. 👍
Thank you - for a non Lenovo user, this helps alot since these laptops have novel connectors compared to the usual types - helps me to find one that will work with a T480 I will be inheriting

I love these videos of yours. I myself have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad E590 (i5-8265u) yesterday. Still waiting for the delivery, I moved from an Apple laptop to windows after a year. How is the screen on this device? Unfortunately, there are no reviews on E590 on youtube, just hoping that the screen would a continuation from this model.
I would assume that they have used the same or an improved screen. It is really good actually. Not harsh or super bright so easy on the eyes and gold colour reproduction. The only small issue with the E580 is that the viewing angle is not very wide. Has only been an issue once when the family were crowded around the laptop watching a video, but for a single user it is excellent. Hope you enjoy your new machine as much as I have mine.
The docking station supplies the power as well as all the other connections, so you just need the docking station plugged in to power, and the single USB-C cable form the dock to your laptop. Thanks for watching and for your question.
Hey Scott. Glad to hear it! And it’s still going strong. I use this setup for my weekly live-streams and having the two monitors and all my devices connected makes things really easy to manage.
Hi Pete! Have you tried using the docking station without the slim tip charger? For some reason i am not allowed to charge my HP laptop through the Lenovo dock.
Thank you for the video! This helps so much! I currently have my thinkpad connected to two monitors through the DisplayPort connections, but i have a 3rd USB-c monitor that I’d like to add to my setup. Is that possible to add to my extended desktop?
Hi Pete, Came across this video of yours which is definitely helpful. Question: I got two USB-C ports on my laptop. One of them is the main charging one. Do I need to connect the charging cable at all if I have connected the dock to the laptop? Also, if I do not need to connect the charging cable, do I connect the docking cable to the main charging USB-C port?
Hi Pete, love your videos! When connecting or disconnecting the computer to the dock, do you then have to turn off the computer before connecting/disconnecting the usb-c cable or just pull/push it out/in?
Hey there my friend. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, you can just plug straight in while the computer is running and it will adjust the settings and connect the dock and your monitors straight away. It’s very convenient because if I’m out somewhere working I can get home, plug in, and immediately continue with what I was working on. 👍
Hello. I have the T490. Will this dock support 5 numbers of 4TB external drives? I want to be able to transfer data simultaneously from one drive to another and also to the hard drive in my T490. Cheers.
Nice demonstration, hey can you connect android phone to this thunderbolt hub via the extra usb-c port and control your phone from the hubs mouse , keyboard and monitor as well as charge your phone? Thx
Really good question? No idea sorry. I don’t use an Android phone. USB-C is pretty universal so you might be good?! But there are much cheaper USB-C docks.
Great video. Just one question: I noticed there is no speakers connector at the dock (other thasn the headphone jack). In case you want to connect your external speakers to the dock, how would you do that?
Hey there. You’ll just need to use the headphone output and connect this to your speakers using the relevant cable. Here’s my cable guide - studiolivetoday.com/cables

Hi Pete, I have a laptop Lenovo Thinkpad T480s for which I’m already using this usb c docking station and thanks to your video it was very easy to install. Today I ordered my son Lenovo Laptop S145 and it doesn’t have usb C as a charger so my question is how can I hook this laptop to my usb C docking station?
Hey there. If it has a USB-C port it may still work but it may not be compatible. You might need to look at the standard USB3.0 docking stations instead of this one doesn’t work.
My laptop doesn’t have usb C port. I tried using a generic usb c to usb A cable instead but it doesnt seem to work. Is there any way i can connect the dock station to my laptop without a usb c port on the laptop?
Good videos presentation. I could see one concern. I am working on t470 laptop Lenovo, I have only one charger. So I have connected to Lenovo dock so that extra accessories connection would not be disturbed. Like keyboard mouse internet cable. Currently after connecting the dock with laptop via USB. I am able to access all accessories but unable to charge my laptops. Could you plz guide me
Useful video for me, thanks Do you know if you're able to plug an additional screen (for a total of 3 external)? For instance use the VGA connector or HDMI/mini-dp port or the laptop, while using the 2 displayports? Also thinking if combination of 1 vga and 1 displayport on UHD (instead of 2 on FHD) is possible..
Some very good questions here which I'm not entirely sure on the answers to I'm afraid. I actually only have two monitors so can't really test a three monitor setup. I would imagine that you could use the HDMI out from the laptop as well as the two display port outputs? The documentation only really talks about single or dual monitors to it's hard to say. Sorry I can't be more help! If I get a third screen in my setup I'll be sure to test this out.
I've contacted support and they told me that it is possible to use the HDMI and mini-displayport at the same time as the dock displays, since it is running its own "gpu" (DisplayLink). They also confirmed me that the dock is limited to 2 display.
Since I have a Thunderbolt 3 connection on my laptop, I went up a notch with this model www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thunderbolt-Dock-US/p/40AC0135US This dock supports 3 screens FHD or 2 screens UHD ..the rest is the same (except it is thunderbolt 3 and may have faster transfer rates?).
Awesome! Well, not awesome that you can’t run three displays but thanks for going to the effort and finding out. I’m sure this will help others with the same questions.
Hi there! Great video, very helpful! I have a question - I have the same setting - the docking station, the two monitors and the Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. The only difference is the cables I use to connect the monitors to the docking station - mine are DisplayPort to HDMI. This setting doesn't work - my monitors say that they don't have HDMI signal. So my question is - do you think that the cable is the problem or maybe there is something else?
Hmmmm.... not sure sorry. I’ve only used the two display port outputs and used display port to DVI cables. HDMI should probably work the same, but if it’s not, maybe try a different connection.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for the fast reply!! I'm starting to think my cables might be malfunctioning, so maybe I'll just get new ones and see if it works out.
Hi Pete! I’ve got two Samsung monitors and the Lenovo thinkpad dock and just recently bought the Lenovo ideapad Flex 5. I tried the steps you advised in the video but for some reason the monitors just aren’t being recognised! The dock is talking to the laptop somewhat because it’s picking up the mouse and keyboard…any idea why monitors are not recognised?
Not sure sorry? Perhaps they are 4K monitors and not supported together? Have you tried one at a time? And have you confirmed the compatibility of the laptop with this dock?
Thanks pall seen one of them at cex and did not know what it was and im good with pcs i build them fix them upgrade them and sell them yet dident know what the doc was lol
Hi Pete, Thanks for the great video. Question: I'm using the lenovo docking station with a lenovo laptop and two monitors. It works awesome! Now I would like to put an old pc into this setup. Unfortunately it does nog detect the lenovo docking station via usb or usbc. Any suggestions?
Thanks for this video. I was not able to get my display to work with this docking station. I tried a HDMI to DVI cable, AND i tried a HDMI-HDMI with a displayport adapter with no luck. I'm also not sure how to find out whether or not the docking station device was discovered. When plugging in or unplugging it in, there is a sounds, but I can't find this device on my devices/printers.
Hello, my docking station is showing as working (white light) I get a noise from laptop to say it's all connected but for whatever reason my monitor won't pick up. please could somebody advise? my laptop doesn't have an HDMI slot but I'm using a smaller version to connect to the docking station. have I missed something here?
Hi. Pete. I ha e the dock and tried to connect two monitors. I was able to do it after watching your video, but when I try to use a video or listen to my students during a video conference, I am not able to have any sound . I have tried everything. Do I need another kind of cables? Thank you!!
Hey there. Sound should still work fine? You might need to change your audio settings from the HdMI output back to the internal speaker. Or plug in some headphones or speakers.
Is the power button on this dock itself able to power on the notebook even when is completely off ? Not just when the notebook sleeps/hybernate s (as seen on your video)? The power button mirroring is a deal-breaker for me. Thanks.
Hey there Peter. Yes, the power button on the dock can power on the laptop when completely shut down and off. This was something I wanted too, as often I will have my laptop docked with an external keyboard and mouse and don't want to open the lip just to hit the power button!
Hello Pete, Thinking of purchasing a ThinkPad X1 Yoga for work-at-home. I want to work on my bed; my desk is about 9-10 feet away and I have 3 older USB-A external hard drives on a USB hub that I need to connect, a scanner, a printer, an older Toshiba laptop, as well as an HDMI tv for one monitor and a Samsung 30" monitor for the other. The monitors will be on overbed tables with longer HDMI cables, but I want to leave the rest on my desk and just run a cable from the dock to my new laptop to access everything. The cable from the dock to my computer will obviously need to be longer than the standard one included in the box (at least 10', with maybe a little slack room). Will a longer connection cable be stable and work, and what specific kind do I need to look for? Have never used a dock before and have no access to look at these in person; debating on USB-C Dock Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2. But I don't know enough about these to determine which will work best with my set-up, especially since my hard drives are pre-USB-C or thunderbolt. Since you own the USB-C Dock I was wondering if you could help me determine if it would be sufficient for my situation. In addition to the office spreadsheets and such, I do photo editing in LightRoom and other art tasks in Photoshop, and will need a stable and powerful setup, but on a budget. Working at my desk is miserable and it's way too small. Thanks for any advice you can provide - LBuford
Hey there. So the Gen 2 version of the USB-C Dock is a good option provided your laptop is powered by USB-C. There are plenty of USB-A ports to continue using your older gear and of course you can attach a hub. I’m not a super expert on the topic so can’t give super specific advice I’m afraid.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Pete! Upon further research, I've pretty much decided I'd be better off going with the Yoga C940 due to the graphics card. Better for my photo work. And it is only compatible with the thunderbolt 3 dock it appears, from options provided on the customization pages. Still so much research to do! Not at all familiar with thunderbolt 3 and how it works with older gear, so will probably have to call Lenovo. Thanks!
I have Gen 2 but my hp pavilion can't see my 2 hp EliteDisplay E242 24" LCD Monitor 1920 x 1200.. The light on the doc is light up white. It was light yellow before.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Great, I knew I was not going mad. Checked Forums and nobody has the Answer.. Very frustrating as I have my USB-C plugged in for the screens and my power cable charging the Laptop defeats the object really.
Sorry Pete, I didn't I'm afraid, mine is a works PC too. Our Support desk just ask us to contact Lenovo which is not very helpful. My colleague has the exact issue on his Brand new Laptop. It's very frustrating.
@@krisbeaumont3693 I have fixed the issue by plugging another charger into the docking station. Initially I had a 65W, but now with a 90W charger it works.
Hey Bobby. That’s very strange? The cables I used were the display port types. Just making sure it has the correct connector at the docking station end?

Hello. I have the T490. Will this dock support 5 numbers of 4TB external drives? I want to be able to transfer data simultaneously from one drive to another and also to the hard drive in my T490. Cheers.
Not sure sorry. If it’s powered by USB-c then it’s likely to work but only Lenovo would be able to confirm.
Good job
😎👍
Trying to use this with Yoga 720 13… i cannot get a display. All the USBs work (mouse, keyboard, etc). Connecting to one monitor with DisplayPort
Yeah not sure sorry. Might need some help from Lenovo.
But there are much cheaper USB-C docks.
could you portrait monitors or the monitors should have the same resolution? does night mode works on there monitors or not?
Not sure sorry. Been a while since I used this.
Like your video!
Thank you my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing.
9:07 I guess my question is how did you get the second larger monitor to pick up the feed from the laptop? I’m still struggling with this.
Hard to troubleshoot sorry. You might need to reach out to Lenovo.
Does the laptop have to be a lenovo laptop? Or should a laptop with a tunderbolt port should do the job?
Technically any other USB-C laptop should work but I would probably go with a more generic one from Belkin or similar.
does ur RJ45 ethernet port on dock work on yours? mine is connec ted but the e580 doesnt register it . any ideas?
Not sure sorry? Mine sets worked fine.
Hi Pete, was the laptop charged via the USB C as well?
Yup.
Thank you great tutorial
Thank you my friend. Glad you found it useful. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
Is a DVI cable required? Can I hook up a HDMI cord from my monitor to the dock to work?
You would need an adapter or display port to HDMI cable.
Do you have a video to show how to hook up the monitors? Only one monitor comes on.
Sorry! Worked out of the box for me. Maybe try a different cable or connection?
Great video. Just one question: I noticed there is no speakers connector at the dock (other thasn the headphone jack). In case you want to connect your external speakers to the dock, how would you do that?
Hey there. You’ll just need to use the headphone output and connect this to your speakers using the relevant cable. Here’s my cable guide - studiolivetoday.com/cables
Can I plug in a webcam to this docking station? If so, do you have one that you recommend?
Yes and yes! ruclips.net/video/SuT-K-zGFLU/видео.html
Logitech C920/922 is great, or the BRIO of you have a little more budget. studiolivetoday.com/gear
@@PeteJohnsMusic hi again, ok thanks for your swift reply, it doesn't have usb c port so no choice.
@@Untoldtruth-f9y bruh, USB 3.0 ThinkPad Dock is a great option for you
would that power your laptop with just that single USBC connection? thanks
Yup. It provides power pass-through.
can you hook the dock straigt to a desktop and then use the HDMI and display port to connect to dual monitors??
I wouldn’t think so? 🤔
My laptop doesn’t have usb C port. I tried using a generic usb c to usb A cable instead but it doesnt seem to work. Is there any way i can connect the dock station to my laptop without a usb c port on the laptop?
Hey there. You’ll likely need a USB-A hub instead as this model only supports USB-C laptops.
Thank you 👍
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic sure thing mate 👍

Good videos presentation. I could see one concern. I am working on t470 laptop Lenovo, I have only one charger. So I have connected to Lenovo dock so that extra accessories connection would not be disturbed. Like keyboard mouse internet cable. Currently after connecting the dock with laptop via USB. I am able to access all accessories but unable to charge my laptops. Could you plz guide me
Hey there. You might need to reach out to Lenovo or someone who specialises in this sort of content.
Hi! I have redmibook 16. I want plug in Hybrid USB-C.
Than I want to plug in 2 monitors (4k with 60 herz ) in Hybrid USB-C?
Is it possible to do?
I’m not sure sorry? This dock is specifically designed for laptops using USB-C for power and data.
Useful video for me, thanks
Do you know if you're able to plug an additional screen (for a total of 3 external)?
Since I have a Thunderbolt 3 connection on my laptop, I went up a notch with this model
www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thunderbolt-Dock-US/p/40AC0135US
This dock supports 3 screens FHD or 2 screens UHD ..the rest is the same (except it is thunderbolt 3 and may have faster transfer rates?).
Hi did you find out what was wrong because I'm experiecing the same thing, please assist
And have you confirmed the compatibility of the laptop with this dock?
hi been trying set up the same docking station, cant seem to get my laptop to detect there is second screen is there drivers need to install
Hey there. No, wasn’t any drivers for me on Windows 10? Make sure you have any updates installed though.
You need the Lenovo USB c thunderbolt cable.
Thanks pall seen one of them at cex and did not know what it was and im good with pcs i build them fix them upgrade them and sell them yet dident know what the doc was lol
Nice one! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
does it have to be a DVI cable? i have a display port to hdmi but monitor does not detect signal
Yeah I’ve found it a bit picky with cable types.
Is it possible to disable the charging option since it always is charging?
Only by unplugging. Most modern batteries manage charging and better life for you anyway.
Yeah, unfortunately it’s a bit hit and miss and dependent upon the hardware so maybe not work with non Lenovo gear.
Hmmmm….. seems odd? Sorry - didn’t have any issues like this personally.
Great!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Maybe try changing out the cable?
Hi.
I like the old ones more
Whatever works for you!
@@PeteJohnsMusic this is so cool.
We have the same laptop can i use eGPU for this?
Hey there. Not sure but I would doubt it unfortunately.
Hello Pete,
Thinking of purchasing a ThinkPad X1 Yoga for work-at-home.
That’s odd? I’ve only used this with my Thinkpad I’m afraid.
My Lenovo L13 can only support 2 monitors, not 3. If I use this, can I use 2 external monitors and keep the laptop closed?
Hey there. I’ve used this with two 1080p monitors and the lid closed and it works well.
@@PeteJohnsMusic cheers
Hey,
I am looking for a power adaptor for this dock. which one should I go for?(specs and the port type)
Yeah good question. You might need to check the original specs sorry? As I’m not sure.
@@PeteJohnsMusic i just wanted to know the port type and the the Wattage
That dock station works only on ibm lenovo laptops and destops?
It may work with others that are powered via USB-C but not guaranteed to work.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for respond
Hi, should the docking station power and charge the battery through the USB-C cable? Mine used to do I am 100% of it. Any help should be appreciated.
Yup it should definitely charge your laptop while connected via USB-C.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Great, I knew I was not going mad. Checked Forums and nobody has the Answer.. Very frustrating as I have my USB-C plugged in for the screens and my power cable charging the Laptop defeats the object really.
@@krisbeaumont3693 did you find a solution?
I'm having the exact same issue
Sorry Pete, I didn't I'm afraid, mine is a works PC too. Our Support desk just ask us to contact Lenovo which is not very helpful. My colleague has the exact issue on his Brand new Laptop. It's very frustrating.
@@krisbeaumont3693 I have fixed the issue by plugging another charger into the docking station.
Initially I had a 65W, but now with a 90W charger it works.
Pete, I followed your instruction. I have 2 HDMI cables on both end of the cables. The monitors are not being recognized. I am stumped.
Hey Bobby. That’s very strange? The cables I used were the display port types. Just making sure it has the correct connector at the docking station end?
You must use the Lenovo USB c thunderbolt cable. Ordinary cable USB c cable will not work.
