  • You can setup 3 monitors on a laptop by using a Lenovo USB-C Dock with most laptops
    We used this dock
    store.impresscomputers.com/pr...
    Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock HDMI DP 90W 40AY0095US
    Which has these connections
    - Power Connection
    - usb-c connection to the laptop
    - 2 x Display Port
    - 1 x HDMI
    - 4 x USB 3.0
    - Ethernet
    + one more usb-c and and USB 3.0 output ports
    We connected 3 monitors, even through they did not have Display Port we were able to connect them to the monitors by using a V7 DP to HDMI/VGA/DVI Adapter

    This was the Lenovo Thinkbook we used

    I had a similar setup but could not get 1080p resolution from all three monitors. I sent Impress a message from their website and someone called me back in less than 10 minutes. I described my problem and the gentleman suggested that Roy call me back in a few mintues, which he did. He mentioned a solution for me to try (USB-C to VGA cable to plug into a USB-C port on the laptop - not the dock). And it worked!! I have 1080p resolution on all three monitors. Thank you, Roy!

    Hey, I recently got a docking station. I have 2 monitors a PC and a Laptop. I wanted to know if there is anyway to setup both (PC and Laptop) for when I use either one. (not both at the same time, but rather one at a time) I use my PC for personal matters and my laptop is for work. So when I have to work, I just plug my laptop and when Im done with work, just pull out the laptop and plug my PC.
    Regards and thank you :)

    why can't i get the third monitor to be greater than 720x576 resolution? very frustrating as this was working recently but I had to undock to go to the office. has not worked since. I have levono T490 laptop. originally had the usb-c gen 2 dock (and it was working with 3 monitors until i undocked). since have purchased levono thunderbolt 3 gen 2 dock to make sure my dock wasn't bad. but with either dock, cannot get third monitor greater than 720x576. so frustrating because it was working before (i had the hdmi cord plugged directly into the laptop). Any help will be greatly appreciated by my sanity 😜🤪

Every time I plug all 3 monitors (DP, DP and HDMI) into the thinkpad dock it doesn't recognize the 3rd monitor. Yes, I have the display settings set to extend, it never detects the HDMI connected monitor.

    Hi,
    I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T590 with windows 10 installed. I currently have the laptop running 2 separate MSI gaming monitors, but I recently hung a TV over the top of them and am trying to use that as a 3rd external monitor. When I go into the display settings, the tv will populate as screen 4 but shows that its disconnected, then whenever I try to turn it on by selecting "extend to this display" it will turn on, but then turn one of my other monitors off. Is there something I can try to get it to see all 4 monitors at once? I read other articles and tried updating drivers, unplugging then re-plugging them all in at once, powering them off and on, tried changing the power settings, but nothing seems to get them to all show active at once. Thank you for your help in advanced!

    • @rolandparkerImpressComputers
      @rolandparkerImpressComputers  Год назад

      Hi, Josh,
      I believe the issue is that your dock may work well with 3 1080p monitors, but may struggle with multiple advanced displays. Gaming or 2K/4K monitors and televisions seem to require more than the dock can handle, especially in multiples. I think the TV pushed it over the limit. In some cases a stronger AC adapter (e.g. 130W) may help, but televisions often cause these issues. Also you might try running the TV at a lower resolution. Hope this helps.

    It's not working. I have a ThinkPad laptop with a NVIDIA RTX A4500 and I am trying to connect two monitors. I also have a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock. Doesn't matter what I do, one of the 2 monitors connected to the dock will show as "Display isn't active", unless I choose "Extend to 2 and 3", and in this case 2 and 3 are duplicated.

      Hi om6. You didn't mention what laptop you are using, but I assume it's relatively new with current CPU/GPU properties. First make sure all displays are running at no more than 1080p and you are using the powered USB-C port. If the any of the displays are trying to run at 4K (or even 2K) that could be overpowering your GPU. Try the setup with just the two Philips 1080p monitors and the notebook display. If that hookup is stable, add in the VS and see what happens. Good luck and let us know what happens.

      Your laptop is about 3 generations past and I think the issue is the strength of your onboard GPU. The 1440 may be a little too much. Try it at 1080. Alternatively try using the notebook's HDMI port as the 3rd 1440 monitor. Good luck and hope this helps.

      Hard to tell from what you've told me. Make sure monitor and any adapters are good. Achieving 3 and 4 displays depends strongly on the strength of the CPU/GPU of the laptop. I have had some lower spec Lenovos (like IdeaPads) not able to run all 4 and sometimes not even 3 at full resolution. The model I used in the setup video was an i7 12th Gen with 16GB RAM and a better than normal GPU. Good luck and hope this helps.

    • @royhdupuis
      @royhdupuis 6 месяцев назад

      The docks are really designed for laptop computers. I've never tried them with desktops. Your model will run 2 displays as is. You might gain a 3rd display by using a USB graphics adapter, but it doesn't work in all cases. That's less expensive than a docking station since a good 3 monitor dock is $200+..
      Enabling 3 monitors from a tower conventionally requires installing a PCIe graphics adapter that supports multiple displays. Basic 3-monitor cards start under $100 and can be found at retail stores or online. Any gaming card should also support 3 displays.
      Good luck and we hope this helps.

      I think you've run into the limits of the hardware. This can happen with certain models having a less powerful CPU/GPU and lower amounts of RAM. Some can't manage 3 1080p HD displays and will limit one to 800x600 or below. Would depend on your exact L380 configuration ( there are lots of variations in specs for the L380). Hope this helps.

    I just purchased a "Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (40AS0090)" to use with my Lenovo Thinkpad T480 and three Dell P2311H monitors. I have an issue that when I plug in the third monitor it only has a resolution of 640X480. All monitors use VGA connections so I have purchased two VGA>Display Port adapters and a VGA>HDMI adapters. I am stuck as I cannot get all three monitors to display at 1920X1080. For added frustration this new dock was to replace an old Thinkpad Ultra Dock. The old Ultra dock worked fine with these monitors so I am unsure as to why the new USB-C dock is having an issue. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    • @rolandparkerImpressComputers
      @rolandparkerImpressComputers  9 месяцев назад

      I have consistently gotten 3 1080p displays with this dock, but have always used late version Lenovo ThinkPads and ThinkBooks with i7/i5 and 16GB RAM. The T480 model is a 2018 model and may not have the GPU horsepower the dock needs. I have run into the same issue with lesser model laptops. My only suggestion would be to try increasing the RAM (if you only have 8GB). Also, if you are also running the laptop internal display, try closing the lid to decrease the load on the GPU. The older dock you were using may have worked better because it was of the same generation as the laptop. Finally Lenovo states this about the 40AS0090 model: "Dock has the ability to support DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 for max 1 x 4K@60Hz, but the real video output would depend on the system's output". Lenovo also states dock will support 3 monitors, but does not guarantee resolution. That burden is on the laptop itself. Here's a link to the spec sheet: pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/accessory/docks/thinkpad-usb-c-dock-gen-2/40as/accessories/acc500106-thinkpad-usb-c-dock-gen-2-overview-and-service-parts. • @royhdupuis
      @royhdupuis 7 месяцев назад

      Hi Damian. This sounds like it might be a hardware problem. You didn't mention what laptop and dock you are using, but I assume they are relatively modern units and the dock supports 2 external displays. I can tell you that the Dell P2212/2312 monitor was originally introduced back in 2011 as the A01 version. While it was updated as to port types, the basic 1080p monitor was unchanged until the P2222 series. Twelve years is well past normal end-of-life for these units. My suggestion is to try some different display units if you can. Hook them up to the dock one at a time. Also try using one dock port (usually DP) and the laptop port (usually HDMI). Good luck.

      I have never done this, but there are several online references on the procedure. Here's one that seems clear: www.technewstoday.com/how-to-use-laptop-screen-as-a-second-monitor. Direct cabling does seem to be one of the options. Best of luck, hope this helps.

    My docking station has 2 DP and 2 HDMI, but I am not able to run 3 at once. I have to plug the 2 DP's in the docking station and the HDMI directly in the laptop to make it work.

      Getting all 3 working at 1080p depends on the generation and strength of your onboard GPU. Also check the specs of the docking station. There could be limitations there. Alternatively try using the notebook's onboard HDMI port with one of the monitors. Good luck and hope this helps.

    Roy, how can I connect my lenovo IdeaPad 3.15 windows 11 to three monitors?

      Most important step is choosing the dock. Not all will support 3 displays. Check specs before buying. Usually 1080p is the max resolution for 3 monitors. Otherwise follow the video and let me know if you have problems. Thanks for your interest.

      @royhdupuis so my previous laptop supported the same three monitors.
      I think I'm understanding.
      Thanks

    i just bought this dock for my lenovo thinkpad t14 1gen. i connected 3 samsung LS24A40XV monitors 60HZ each, 1 directly to HDMI and the other 2 using an Active DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter BUT when i connect the USB-C to the laptop, the laptop screen goes black then the monitor that is on the HDMI port goes into 800x600 I AM SOOOOOO DISSAPOINTED! i have to now just settle for using the Startech Adapter where i only can use the monitors no laptop but at least at higher resolution1920x1080. Funny thing is that it works just fine on my MSI creator laptop but not my work computer Lenovo Thinkpad which this dock was designed for or maybe my employer just shelled out for the crappiest Lenovo out there.

    What if my laptop doesn’t have usb c

      Hi Charlie. USB-C and USB-3 both have transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. The only thing special about USB-C is its physical design. Use an adapter to change your USB-3.0 or 3.1 port to USB-C. Keep in mind the old USB-2 standard is much slower and won't give you what you want. Hope this helps. Roy
