My son and I just rebuilt our JD 350B crawler loader. It was a big job. Even with my Case 580 backhoe lifting the heavy parts, it was a big job. I think parts for a clutch/brake redo would be about $800 a side today. Any of you guys going to rebuild the rear ends on one of these loaders or dozers, pull the plugs from under each clutch and let out the water or oil, these are dry clutches ( the 450s are wet clutches I think). Then pull the clutch covers off under the seat and wash the clutches down well with brake cleaner, 5 cans per side. Then blow them out well with compressed air and let them dry. If you have any chance of getting it to steer, try it now. The shaft seals are known to leak oil into the clutch area and contaminate the brake and clutch material. If this doesn't help, it's time for a rebuild. Our loader steers like it is new and is very responsive and the brakes stop on a dime too. We are fitting a 4-way bucket to it and I am rewiring it with a bunch of LED lights. It won't be long and my son will be digging on his new land.🤩
Dad’s uncle had an old 350-A. It was a gas jobber and didn’t have an enclosed cab or power tilt or angle. You could pull pins and angle the blade. The little dozen did have a very powerful winch on the back of it. We used it a few winters to haul out very big maple trees, all that were over four foot diameter.
It is a pretty good looking machine and I definitely think that it is worth working on and fixing the steering . I have never seen a 350 with an enclosed cab like that . I am looking forward to seeing it being worked on more . Take care and stay safe . 🤗👍💖💫
I am no expert concerning anything. With that disclaimer out of the way, I have a 1980, so I am told, 350C with a loader. I bought replacement rails and grousers as the original rails were stretched and grousers were worn flat. It's a pretty reliable machine for the most part. Mine has a tank leak from the diesel tank. I intend to do the steering clutches when the tracks are off. Let me know what you find as sources for the clutch parts. The actual foot clutch linkage is sticking on mine, so I generally just use the reverser. Stout machine for the size for sure. Mine weighs around 12,000 and only has ROPS. I will be looking for your future productions on this gem. I forgot, mine has 2 batteries and an isolation switch to disconnect the batteries.
You show a lot of mechanical skills and common Sense, I never know what's going to pop up on your channel and it's always interesting. Have a great Independence Day 👍☮️🇺🇲
I get a kick out of your explanations when working on different things. Like the moss rug in this video. Keep up the work and having fun while doing it. Thank you
Thinking of buying an older 350 and needed to learn something about it. Great video. I have operated M-48 tanks, a JD 450 and a Ford backhoe loader so I should be able to make the adjustment. Thanks
Tilt your blade put down pressure on blade to where it lifts the front up a little and angle your blade it will move the front end over a little!, it will take several times!.
if the clutches are stuck, stick he dozer on stump and ram it with one track it should allow it to spin in a circle around the stump, freeing up the stuck side
My uncle had one around the same year model but was a 450 with a regular rops. I needed to use it and It had been sitting for 7-8 yrs because it shut off. They thought they ran it out of diesel. I figured out it was the injection pump solenoid and got a good used one for $60 and it cranked pretty quick and ran really good! But I spent a crapload of money on hydraulic lines. But I cleaned up a few acres of my land and drove it back via power line cut about 1 mile. His son used it and trying to push mountains in high range they tore something up in the rear end so bad that it busted the housing. Sold it for couple hundred dollars!
I was thinking, do I have a suggestion? Then the decision to back up on an Oshkosh anchor showed me that which I never knew before. Great selection of toys and tools you have there Mr.
New subscribers, not sure where you are located, but you definitely find some rare pieces. You have a lot to offer to your viewers. I like your check off list of what to do next 😉 😀 😏 There is that kick in the pants filling, when you can bring something back to life. I'm hooked!!! C-Ya!
I put two steering clutches in a dozer. It was pretty much a nightmare of a job. Did it from the top down, under the seat and everything in the cab had to come out including the floor and roll cage.
I miss those days of take it apart wiggle all the crap around inside and put it back together and presto it works! So many things of yesteryear just get stuck and need some love to work again. I had a dozer that sat for years and the steering clutched froze up on it, soaked them in diesel waited a week drove the machine out to a huge stump blocked the steering back and started it to digging about an hour one popped loose and in another 30 minutes the other one broke the rust holding the disks to the plates.. Don't know the history with this one so maybe some of the linkage broke? Anyway I love the channel and the way you go about things thanks for the time it takes to think up, video, edit and UL these for me to enjoy!
Thanks! I think you're right about the linkage. For a few years the clutches would release, and then got slowly worse. They might be frozen now, but that wasn't the original cause of the problem.
Just came across this vid. We used to slack tow tracked vehicles regularly. The way to do it is to use 2 chains/cables of equal length and cross them over, left of tow vehicle to right of vehicle being towed and right of tow vehicle to left of vehicle being towed. Due to blade, in this case might be better to tow in reverse.
I bought a 350 B and one side wasn't working . Once I got it home took the inspection plates off the top of the differential and found the right side the clutch linkage was out of adjustment put it back to factory specs and working great .
That usually works, but my Dad tried it years ago when the problem first showed up, and adjusted them all the way. It worked for a while, then had steering only on one side, then none. Doing some internet digging, I found that a number of people with early model 350Bs have found that the bellcrank that moves the throwout bearing for the steering clutch fails inside the box. I guess that's why the 350C's have a completely different steering setup!
I did steering clutches on a old 350 they were the dry type ( you can update them to wet) after I jacked it up and got the track off tore it apart looked like water got into it and everything rusted so went for parts the parts man said I should convert it to wet, but the owner said he just wanted me to do the side that was broke. Long story short put it back together then got one of them government job 6 months later I went to visit my old boss and you’ll never guess what was back in the shop… yep that old 350 jacked up and the other side was tore apart.
hi,i,m a new suscriber to,you so interesting and funny, and a real handyman, you much interesting that vice grip gar,/mustie 1 /junkyard digs an so many more,i have so mutch fun to listen to your video, espacially the j-10 series, when i was young,i have the same honcho edition, from a frenchie who live in the north of quebec, canada,
My 1975 John Deere 350C has a special attachment on the dash for a can of ether to attach. On the back side there is a thin straw like hose going to the intake manifold. ( don’t use it because it’s way down the list of things to fix) I only used ether when I first started getting it running after it setting for over 20 years. It starts fine now without.😊 Is ether really hard on things? I appreciate all the videos on you tube on dozer restorations. They have been very helpful.
Man,I love your channel. and the way you explain stuff,a 5th grader could understand it ! great job....btw,I share the SHIT out of every episode! ... hello from Minot (My-not) North dakota
a little tip for others who are beginners messing with diesel or just old age. Lol. with those old-school rotary-style injection pumps usually Roosa-master, Stanadyne, or Bosch. MAKE sure when you take the top lid off to access the fuel shut-off solenoid that you reinstall it how it was, Otherwise when you try to start the machine up again it'll go to "full" fuel and run away, and yes it should "click" every time.. what i do is usually unhook that Fuel solenoid wire and crank the eng over with the injectors cracked so it bleeds the AIR from the pump/lines to the injectors without starting. nice cute machine. Love the oddball cab. Will you do a start up on that green tilt-cab trck?
Good point, luckily on this one there's three screws, so it couldn't bolt on wrong. I did keep a floor mat to put over the intake handy in case it did try to run away. And yes, I'll try to start that tilt cab, but it will be in a while. I ran out of time to get to that one on this trip.
@@LowBuckGarage Yes usually the top only comes off one way, but the Lever on the solenoid only goes back one way, the pump. Anyhow. Looking forward to the new videos! no rush. Wonderful content.
The steering stopped working way back when it was being used regularly, first one side then the other. I think something bent or broke in the linkages, rather than the clutches freezing up. Apparently the 350B's were known for this, which is why the 350C's went to a full hydraulic steering system.
I don't get up there very often, its over 2000 miles from where I live, so it probably will be next summer before I get back to it. I'll definitely do a follow up, though!
Something's wrong with the clutches that let the tracks move independently. The steering brake just slows the whole machine down, both tracks at the same time.
Yes, the fluid was up. This one has a mechanical linkage with hydraulic assist, so it should have done something, even if it took a lot of effort. I think the throwout bearing bellcrank is broken or bent, my Dad already tried the adjustment many years ago.
I could feel the mosquitos and smell the diesel fuel, thanks for enduring all that for us. I enjoyed the video immensely.
I've never seen a 350B with a cab like that. That's a sweet dozer.
Really interesting to see how you diagnosed that fuel system and traced the fault. Heck, I'm glad to find this channel.
Thanks, glad you enjoy it!
Really enjoy your videos. Keep em coming 😀

I had the opposite problem. The pump wouldn't turn off. Great video. You're a great help to a carpenter playing mechanic. Thanks
Early 1970's for sure - worked on a bunch of old JD equipment, even restored a 1970 544-A Loader - fun stuff and fairly well built!
underrated channel this guy can fix or repair anything thanks for the effort in your vidios the comedy is good also

hey Buddy , this was great .
That was a cool video. I like how you showed how too get an old diesel running.
Just came upon your channel, will stay tuned for more. Congrats on your start up..
years ago mine buddy rebuilt one of them and i help as much as i could. Turned out really good he works on his farm with it

My experience mini years ago with a smaller John Deers although a great little crawlers they did have problems with the steering clutches
I put two steering clutches in a dozer. It was pretty much a nightmare of a job. Did it from the top down, under the seat and everything in the cab had to come out including the floor and roll cage.
Nice it Started really E-Z for setting that long. Hopefully it won't be much on the Clutch's for the Sterring.

The cab option is something that I don't see a whole lot on John Deere dozers of that vintage
I got the same issue with my 350 but ive got right steer the drives ive heard are a pain in the butt to work on
another sniff of ether!
We used to prime before starting any fuel issues

@@SchnelleKat Ah, ok, thanks for the tip! Next time I'm up there I've got more dozers to move, so I'll watch for that.
I'm hoping to see you fix the steering on that machine!
Try to adjust steering brake bands.
😎👍😎
Just put a log in one of the tracks to turn no problem. Cheers.
Can't wait till you get a runaway diesel
Love your dozer. If you ever want to sell. Give me a shout. Thanks.
Put the blade against something solid and pull both steering clutches back and drive until one brakes free

Need the Three Wheeler in the background
You have to be getting 12 volts to the fuel injection pump .
"Intresting" is not a word.
*- This was July 1th, 2022. When do we see more on fixing the steering clutches ? ? ?*
I don't get up there very often, its over 2000 miles from where I live, so it probably will be next summer before I get back to it. I'll definitely do a follow up, though!
if you got one track steering is all you need
Poor Thomas bus!!!
The brake on either side should turn it
Something's wrong with the clutches that let the tracks move independently. The steering brake just slows the whole machine down, both tracks at the same time.
Check all the fluids I check your controls might be stuck
key is off?
The big problem is shutting them down
1:24 That is a win! The next 21 1/2 minutes are just bonus material.
You need to push up to a tree then use the clutch
I'm sure your checked the steering fluid?
Yes, the fluid was up. This one has a mechanical linkage with hydraulic assist, so it should have done something, even if it took a lot of effort. I think the throwout bearing bellcrank is broken or bent, my Dad already tried the adjustment many years ago.
sol not working?
3 quarter?
Northern Ehr
Wouldve been nice to have had an extra set of hands…😎
Yeah, running between both vehicles and then adding in moving the camera around made it take way longer than I expected!
Needs some wheels under the blade
Oh, that poor battery.
I like the video but you could have moved along using the tree's around you.
Thanks! That would have worked, but I didn't want to risk tearing the bark off those trees.
Use wd 40 instead of starting fluid
Good idea, I'll give that a shot next time! This stuff claimed it had cylinder lube in it, but light oil would be better.
never use a chain lol...never
It looks like the undercarriage has been well flogged you might want to check the wear on everything
fule fulter or loosing prime
You have an amazing assortment of junk!
Did you check the oil, water, also, battery was good, operator error.
tow with your aircraft tow
Didn't see you ck oil water anything fuel anything
You messed up can’t start a firecracker
Im sorry but that machine has some ugly proportions...
