Fisher and Paykel Clothes Dryer Repair - Capacitor replacement

- This Fisher and Paykel dryer has serviced us well for nearly 10 years but has developed a problem where it either wont start, particularly on heavy loads, or it stops mid cycle. This is a common problem with older dryers and easily, and cheaply fixed
What a legend - thanks, Alex! I googled the problem with my F&P dryer (ED56) and most answers pointed to this capacitor being the culprit. Watching your video was enough to convince me to buy a replacement capacitor off eBay and complete the replacement myself. It was tight, but I was able to do the job just by taking the top and back off. Sure enough, the old capacitor had burst and the new one works the drum like new. My wife is well proud of me and I saved an otherwise perfectly good dryer from the tip!

Thanks Alex, you were spot on with the diagnosis and how to replace the capacitor. $15 Part and about 30min jiggling in the tight spot and fixed! You saved me having to buy a new dryer. Thanks Again
Hi Alex FYI the capacitor in a single phase (240v) motor is used to 'split' the single phase through a separate winding in the motor. This separate winding is called the start winding. The start winding is connected through the capacitor which corrects the power factor and creates a 'phase shift'. This phase shift creates the small amount of starting torque for the run winding to take over. This is why, without the capacitor, the machine will sit and hum as it vibrates between positive and negative polarity with alternating current. In this case you can manually give the motor a spin in either direction and the motor will run in the direction you spin it......hope this helps mate.

Can you please advise whether a partial failure of the capacitor might be the cause of the motor direction not reversing when it should? I have a hard time getting my head around how the motor can start in either direction - I just wondered whether it was a timing problem influenced by the capacitor?
I’ve never actually seen this drier run in the other direction, but I bought it second-hand. Maybe it is mis-wired. Are there two start windings?
Meanwhile I solved its main problem of not turning on (and also not adjusting temperature etc.) - all the tact switches behind the touch panel had gone intermittent. Strangely the originals have two legs but I’ve managed to fit the more usual four-leg 6mm tact switches in there. So at least all the functions are working, except for reversing direction.

Thank you Alex, you have helped me save our clothes dryer. Bought the capacitor, opened the machine, replaced the capacitor. Put the covers back on. Like a new one!! Beats the hell out of paying a repair man upwards of $200.

Hi, thanks for the VDO. I took the back off then the fan in front of the motor. This gave easy access to the faulty cap. All fixed.

Thanks for the vid. I had a similar situation with my Honda 9kva generator. I bought a new capacitor for it . Cost $50 bucks for a replacement . well worth the effort . It’s ironic that I didn’t think about the capacitor in my F+p dryer . Thanks again for sharing. 👣🦘🍻

To discharge the old cap you can just short the terminals with a insulated screwdriver held over the gap. That would save all the effort you had to go through.

Thanks Alex. I had exactly the same symptoms with my F&P Dryer, and even though my unit was a newer model, it turned out that the capacitor was the issue. Once it was replaced with same rating cap it all functioned as normal. You'd think F&P would design their dryers so this can be replaced easily like a starter on an old fluro light. But I guess the cap could still be holding a possible 400volts charge.

It works a treat.
I found a Underwire from a bra in the dryer which i thought was also making the drier make a nice loud whirring noise. Took out the underwire and it still makes the loud whirring noise. I think it;s the fan. That'll be another days work. Thanks again.

If you're concerned about discharging the capacitor you should also be concerned about the charge in the new one. Mine had nearly 1V across it when delivered. You don't need to make up a special lead for this, just a 1K resistor with alligator clip leads. Leave it on for a minute and you're done.

You could simply check the pins of the Cap with a multimeter for any voltage remaining. I've had my dryer unplugged for weeks now, I doubt there is any charge still stored, but I'll check first still.

A few notes.
1. I paid up and bought the capacitor from F&P. US$22.
2. The 'discharger' (the red yoke in the video) I made for $1.
3. At the electrical store where i bought the connectors for the DIY discharger they had capacitors for $5 but with wire leads not the firm male types. No biggy could have easily and safely done it that way too, but maybe not as tidy.
4. At 12:01 in the video take note of the orientation (white, yellow, pink) of the pulleys before you you screw it. I made the mistake of anchoring with the white and pink pulleys hanging below the yellow. Again no biggy, I just had to loosen anchoring screws again and get the right order of white, yellow, pink.

Thanks for the great video, I’ve watched it several times before I replaced the capicator on 2 Fisher & Paykel dryers! One timer model and one Electronic model! Also, will point out, is these capicators don’t really need to be discharged as I got told this by a appliance tech. ☺️

I replaced the capacitor, I am 71 years ladies. (thank you) but now the air does not heat up. any suggestions where the trip button is or how to fit a new element. :)
You could have shorted the capacitor with your screwdriver, OR leave the control on and short the plug contacts. It will be in circuit and discharged in any case most likely.

I get oodles of completely perfect dryers down at the tip that only have faulty capacitors. Then I on-sell them for $150 bux each

Followed the video and read the forums. Confirmed that I had the right capacitor - it actually looks just like the one in the video. However, I have the following problems. 1) Its starts spinning fine for about 20 seconds. 2) the engine gets very hot. 3) It I release tension in the belt such that there is "no" tension, the engine spins. As soon as I apply the slightest tension - it stops spinning. Any ideas on why the engine is getting hot and doesn't have much torque?
Hi Alex my 8 year old dryer just like your works fantastic but now it doesn’t spin if i put a 3kg load.. only works for 4-5 pcs of clothing. What do you suggest for it to be done? Is it time to replace or it still has chance to revive after service.. if the revival possible what service should i give it? Many thanks in advance

Hi Zoya, when it is not spinning can you still hear the motor turning? If so, the belt might be slipping and need replacing. If you cannot hear the motor turning then something else is wrong, perhaps double check that the springs that hold the drum in place are all connected OK, if not the extra weight of clothing might be unbalancing the drum enough that it wont turn on with a heavier weight of clothing. Hope that helps.

Probably would’ve been safer to discharge the old capacitor with the pliers instead of that jumper lead. In saying that, it most likely wouldn’t of had much of a charge if not any as that is the part that’s failed

Thank you for your video. I did what many have done from your post. Fixed a perfectly good dryer by replacing the capacitor. I commented to my wife it's odd (or not) that a common fail component should be so hard to get at. Not a case of common sense design, or is it intentional?
So happy the video helped. Yes I would say by design, I believe it's called 'manufactured obsolescence'.
The permanent split-phase motor's capacitor is used in the production of torque on the rotor - not to maintain or regulate current. It should never hold a charge after the appliance is switched off because the motor's primary winding (a piece of wire) is connected across it. Bad teaching leads to bad things.
+Nickoli Nickoli all motor capacitors hold some sort of charge hours if not days after use. I dare you to touch the ends of one or put it on your tongue after use? hahaha
Yup. Sure. If that's the case, and connecting a wire across the cap's terminals discharges it (and without a load resistor, dangerously might I add); how does this piece of wire differ from the main motor winding which is connected in parallel (across) the capacitor. Where electricity is concerned, little knowledge is not dangerous - it's deadly.

you put a load on it and discharge it

and i'm just looking at the size of the Cap and wondering if he's gonna kill himself.
Just so you know; when discharging a cap. you should use a ''load'' meaning something like a LED light this way you will see a fast light go on then off and you will not hurt the cap. also you will know that it is discharge.... P.S. you never short out a cap like that it can blow up in your face...

Hi we have a digital fisher n paykel dryer which only starts after about 15 minutes of sitting there. Sometimes if I open up whilst turned on, I'll spin drum a few times and it starts working. Don't want to have to buy a new one. Do you know what the prob could be?

Thanks for the video. I too have replaced my capacitor. I would have liked it if you had been a little more confident that the capacitor wiring didn't matter on which terminal it was placed. Especially since in the DC world it generally does. I'm assuming this is an AC component (since there is no +/- lables on the terminals etc) and therefore doesn't really matter either way. But an explanation on the video at that point would have been nice.
My capacitor fell off due to the mounting plastic pin breaking after 14+ years of heat and vibration, fell off and pulled the wire connecting terminals off. Bought the same capacitor. If you look at the top plate near the mounting pin there is a 7. look at the pin directly down the other end and that is the pin you put the white wire on as per the electrical schematics diagram label on the back panel of the dryer . In this video old mate Alex puts the correct wire on the right pin. Don't know what would have happened if he had put the wrong wire on. :)
This looks great! Going to attempt to fix mine this weekend. Just a bit concerned about the discharging of the cap? What exactly do I need to buy to make this please?

Get a Multimeter, and measure the volts coming out of it... simple
the Multimeter is a load
and you can see the when the voltage reaches 0V DC,
then you know it's ok to touch

Awesome video! I've just replaced my capacitor but it looks like that wasn't the issue. I get power to the machine but there is no hum. I press start and it beeps once and the light goes solid but no action or sound. The door sensor seems fine. Can you think of what else it could be?

the cap have nothing to whole system accept 2 wires connected. Dont touch ! just open cap and change use plier.
