I have the same Westinghouse dryer, it's always been stiff to turn. Thanks for showing the idler and the capacitor replacement, I went looking for your video to see if the polarity of the capacitor mattered and you say it doesn't, so that's all good. I wish I'd seen your video earlier as your method of taking off the back was much quicker and easier than mine...
Dude, thank you - solved my problem! On a side note, you my friend have the best personality for repair videos, I wish we could be friends! Lol.. keep up the cheerful good work, random shots of ya Lily pond, and all around giggles you give us by being totally unprepared for what you might find - AS IT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE!! 👍🏻
Bridget hi! Haha thanks for the stellar comment! You've definitely made my day :D And sure we can be friends. Sub to my channel and cheer me up every now and then lol. It's difficult to get cool subscribers willing to like and comment my vids. And lol, I'll try and clean my pond up before showing anymore of it... but like the idea of showing stuff like that and having more of a relaxed approach to youtube content :) Thanks again!
Thanks bro, this is the best demonstration video for home repairs I have ever seen. Saved me hundreds of dollars as the wife wanted me to throw ours out but it isn't that old. Now it runs like the day I bought it for her 👍
Magic advice. My dryer was humming but not turning until I gave the drum a turn or two. So I bought a start capacitor on line for about 8 bucks and use is now working like new. Many thanks you are a champion.!!
Just finished the Electrolux EDV 605 repair using a new capacitor I got online a few days ago. Followed all of the 'Rats' steps and all is perfect again, thanks mate.....I even did the job using your 'safety boots'!
Thanks for sharing this video. I was able to sort out my dryer after watching this. Replaced a broken idler pulley, belt and bearing. Runs as good as new and quieter than ever. Thanks!
No worries! And apologies for the late reply. Looks like you left this comment at basically the same time I had a massive house fire thanks to a faulty electric blanket. It's set me back quite a bit. But we'll done! Feels great when you repair something yourself rather than toss it out and spend lots of money replacing it 🙂👍
Thank you very much. Just followed your instructions and resurrected my Simpson dryer with a $16 capacitor from Jaycar. Got some kudos from the missus too!!!!
I have been stuck on my dryer for a while cause I couldn't find anything to show me the how or what I did wring when replacing the part. So thank you. An also your a funny man I didn't see where u were from an I was like I'm sure he is Aussie an then u said spider I was like yep . So thanks for the info an a giggle look forward to watching more of you.
Haha thanks for the awesome comment, you had me laughing yourself 😅 Yep definitely an Aussie! and really happy I helped you save another one. Well done for fixing it and not throwing it out! and thanks for subscribing, hopefully I can make you laugh again at some point 😊 ps. Star Wars rocks!
Did one of these idler bobbin jobs when I was living down in Tassie. Saved a small fortune. Where most would have hurled it out, I had time on my hands, like you seem to do, and broke out the tools. Ain't done the capacitor gig before... so thanks for that. Cause we have a praaaablem once again with another version of the same model (SDV401). Only this time the symptoms are different. So I shall approach from the shallow end, money wise, and take it one step at a time. I ended up creating a service 'window' right next to the motor, (with an angle grinder). In case it went pear-shaped again, I wouldn't have to pull the whole back off it to look in. Had to make a cover, of course. Used the side off another gloss white tossed out unit, and some metal self-tappers. Worked well. Tx Man! Great stuff.
Wow that's a pretty cool idea well done! At least these Simpsons are easy to work on. I think they're the easiest out of all the brands so keep going with them mate 👍
Hey just fixed my dryer because of this video (same model). Interestingly that my fault seemed to be a combination of the spring holding the motor dislodging itself and also the bearing where the drum connects to the dryer back completely being shredded. Found an identically sized bearing for $1.80 from local HW store and dryer is back up and running. I guess it’s pretty old now so not sure how long it will last but I really appreciate this video mate. Well done!
Awesome I’m going to try on my Simpson 400,the dryer would hum, spin, hum, spin I opened the back, belt and idler pulley seem fine, then I tried fiddling around with the door switch, sensor or whatever it’s called thinking that was the problem. But when I saw your video it was a Capacitor that was causing the humming problem thanks 🙏 buddy for the tip 👍
Good luck mate, It probably hums when the load of washing is heavy and when it's light it probably spins. Just make sure you pull the capacitor out of your machine first and buy the same one. It's probably the same in all Simpsons but best to be sure. Let me know how you go 👌
Thank your so much what a thorough video step by step ordered and replaced the PULLEY IDLER ordered from Genuine APPLIANCE PARTS cost plus delivery $35 taken your advice and ordered a genuine part and not from EBay. Belt was in good condition. Like and subscribe thanks mate.
Hey sorry for the terribly delayed reply. And thanks so much! I've never been one of those RUclipsrs who like to keep their videos as short as possible. Sometimes the little things are what matters to a lot of people 😎👍
Im doing one at the moment. Can you tell me if the motor shaft (that the belt sits on) should move up and down or stay firmly in one position. The one I have at the moment moves. It runs sweet in one position but when it moves towards the fan the shaft stops going round, Any suggestions please
Thank you I learn a lot from your video.. I'm from Philippines. I just ask if the idler have some crack in the middle and not perfect circle.... It's created a noise?
Hi there, mate your idler really does need to be 100% perfect as far as shape is concerned. A lot of the time you'll see a hair line crack in the center close to the core. This is actually quite normal. I see it on more and more idlers these days. They still can last quite long time. But Idlers with bits missing and broken off pieces should be replaced for sure.
But why the dryer when it spin..thiere is a noise.. The bearing is okay.. Theirs a possibility that the motor have a cause of the noise..? Thanks for responding
@@basictechtutorial9356 Oh I see what you're saying. You have a high pitch noise when the dryer is turning? If the bearing is ok then it is most probably your idler. I only just discovered this very recently, but if you pull the idler off and look inside the center metal core you will see some score lines in the metal. It's this tiny little defect that is causing the squealing sound. Very hard to see but they are probably there. I fixed it once by sanding the inside with some sandpaper wrapped around a small rod... as well as adding some grease. But you're much better off buying a new idler if you can. Just remember to clean the shaft that the idler sits on so that it's smooth like glass. This really helps as well 👍
Hi there my spring keeps coming off after the third spin (1st spin clockwise 2nd anti and then the third spin clockwise it stops spinning and when i pull it apart the spring has come off on the lug closest to the outside of the inside frame) how do i keep it from not coming off or why is it coming off Very good video mate now i have more of a understanding Cheers
Thanks Flower Cool, honestly I don't think I've come up to that problem before where the spring comes off on it's own. Normally the belt comes off and the sudden release can cause the spring to pop off. I'm not sure sorry. It's obviously something very minor that over time is causing it to do that. Perhaps just keep trying and when rotating the drum by hand to settle the belt with the back off just do it in both directions for a lot longer. Here's another video of me putting a belt back on which might be a little clearer to this earlier video that most people watch. If you notice at 26:17 I quickly push the spring so it's slightly sitting over the motor. It's not a big deal whether it's on the side like it previously was or pushed over it like I did. Maybe leave it off to the side in your case. I do push it back to the side at 26:44 though. Sorry I can't be anymore help. ruclips.net/video/2FDgMll0E3U/видео.html
@@DIYDumpRat Thanks for replying this video was very clear ive been rotating it back and forth and it seems that the belt is going higher then the rotating shaft hence why the belt is coming off and then when open it i see that the spring has come off the belt does move up and down but when it does rotate upwards it goes higher and then right off
@@Unkown_278i just had the same issue with the spring. Taking the spring off and putting back on the other way around fixed the problem for me - so now the part of the spring that was attached to the motor is now attached to the body of the dryer and vice versa
@@DIYDumpRat thanks mate, have you had the problem of the pulley tension spring popping off at the bottom? Everything I put it back on, it pops off again. Really driving me mad. Any suggestions mate. Cheers.
@@Aussie3225 Too be honest no I haven't. I know when you put the spring on there's bit of a ledge on the motor casing that the spring can sometimes get hung up on so I always make sure I push the spring off to the side of it. But if you do what I do and test it thoroughly by turning the drum a dozen times in one direction and a dozen in the other when testing that the belt is in the correct position (before putting the back on) it really shouldn't do that.
@@DIYDumpRat OK mate, mine comes off everything, and of course it sends everything into a screeching mess. I've invented a little hack, should be good. Hey my man....great video I'm trying to fix my westinghouse 4kg Dryer It seems to only spin one direction....it attempts to spin the opposite direction but it the drum comes to a stop until it times out and spins the initial direction- without a doubt the motor still spins What's the problem here?
Hi there again. Our dryer stopped heating all of a sudden. Discovered that one of wires serving the heater burned out near the controller. The heating element still have some resistance. I can buy a replacement wiring harness for 60nzd plus gst. Do you think I should still use the heating element? What is the normal ohm reading including the thermostat?
my edv600 wont turn the opposite direction, only humming. but it spin both ways well when the load is reduced. the belt and others are fine, the capacitor replaced already. but the problem still there. any advice?
We pulled ours apart due to a squealing sound, replaced the back bearing thinking we had fixed it but no luck. Any ideas on what else it could be. Sounds like a cat in it lol.
Yep absolutely. The most common reason. If it hums you need a new capacitor. Sometimes you can even get it going by spinning the bowl (empty) and quickly closing the door while the timer is already set to the on position.
