Thank you for the comments/explanations! I lm aware this is a classic so on a first listen while listening to his voice for the first time I got the meaning misunderstood. I fully appreciate this song more after rewatching and listening and hope to dive more into his work soon!

Geroge's voice is so amazing, it's easy to get lost in the sounds. How many notes can you get out of "her"? George like 12 notes out of that sylallbe. He has a TON of good songs - funny novelty songs, AMAZING duets with Tammy Wynette ("golden ring" is touching, and "two story house" is fun) and cheeky songs like "the corvette song".

It's understandable. George Jones, aka, possum, loved the ole bait n switch in his music.

The Corvette Song is another great plot twist song from old George. Country lyrics have a lot of cleverness to them, despite the simple appearance of the artists.

@@pleutron : That, my friend, is the absolute gospel. Many do exactly that. This reaction amounted to word salad being produced by a person far more interested in self-promotion than the piece being evaluated, Whenever a hears, rather than listens, important information is almost always lost or ignored. The messaging of the song is abundantly clean and simple. Ain't no implications. There are no double meanings. A person loves another for as long as that person is alive. No matter what, the love stays alive as long as there is life. Simple. He stopped loving her because we all know that with death come finality. And yet, this reactor missed something so basic, something so damned obvious. Tells you a lot about the person, huh? Self-obsessed? Oh yeah, that and much, much more.

most reactors don't get it the first time thru - mostly because the wreath on the door thing is old fashioned and doesn't really happen anymore - so they don't 'get it'

@@Cybrludite ; Okay, let's say the wreath thing was missed or not heard due to interference. What about all the other points made. Old photos? Old love letters?Going crazy from time to time? All dressed up to go away? Soon they'll carry him away? First time a smile was seen in years? I mean, how clear a picture must be painted? The problem is not hearing. The problem is not listening. There is a huge difference between the two, you know?

George Jones had a very unique voice and vocal delivery. I swear the man could sing the phone book and make it a tear jerker. This is perhaps his greatest hit yet he almost didn't record it, thinking nobody would like it. His career was in the basement and he was facing bankruptcy so he took a chance. This song is what revived his career and made him even more popular than ever before. It's considered by many to be the greatest song ever written despite having such a dark theme. His friend SAID he would love her until he died... and he did. You're pretty young so you may not be familiar with the old southern tradition of hanging a wreath of flowers (Preferably black) on the door of someone's house that just had a death in the family, especially someone who lived there. That way folks know that the family is grieving and they deserve to not be harassed by salesmen, religions, whatever... although stopping by to bring food and ask after them to see if they are okay. It does help

    Great Reaction to this Classic.......
When George was presented with this song, he didn't want to record it, saying that no one would listen to such a sad song...... It ended up being one of his biggest HIts, and gave his career a second breath of life......
Singer is talking about his friend, the main character in the story who passed away......
    - "He said he would love you till I die"
    - "All Dressed to Go Away"..... Undertaker had done funeral preparations.....
    - "They placed a wreath upon his door".... In the south they use to hang a black wreath on the front door to signify a death in the family.....
    - "Soon they will carry him away"..... take him from the house where the visitation was held to cemetery......
    - "She came back to see him one last time....." She attended the funeral......

Hi Aileen 😊 I saw that your reaction to George Jones's He Stopped Loving Her Today dropped while I was at work and I watched your reaction with the sound down in the break room and turned on the transcript so I could read your words... Magnificent heartfelt spectacular are words that describe your reaction 😊👍 You're absolutely right😊 the genre may be different and yet talent is unmistakable and this is what we enjoy 😊 Yes in the country community, George Jones was considered the best country singer not only his tone but also his phrasing and storytelling 😊 Also how he puts his mind, soul and Spirit into each of his songs and you picked up on this beautifully 😊👍 Before listening to your reaction here at home, I read all the comments including your PIN as you explained that on first listen there was a misunderstanding in the lyrics, namely the Southern culture of things...a black wreath on the door denoting death. The opening two lines set the tone..."I love you till I die" and "You'll forget in time"and then the story unfolds. I think a lot of people think that your reactions are rehearsed and that you might listen and re-listen before recording but that is not true, if they have been listening to your recordings for very long. I discovered your channel with your reaction to the Beatles Now and Then back in November last year and then I began listening to your reactions from your beginning and brought it forward. In listening to your reactions, I have come to understand you, as a person, and how you present yourself and react to the videos in a very fresh sense so that your reactions are pure and honest. This is something that is very important to you. Because of this we who are watching learn how you think, how you listen and how you feel and you take the time to explain this to us. And you have stated this that there are those who listen and you want to feel which in turn leads to understanding. Many get annoyed of you pausing to reflect on a particular idea that you have that the song conveys to you. These people are in the minority. The reason we love you and the reason why your channel has grown is because we delight when you pause the video to explain something that has hit you. You do discuss it later in the closing comments and that is great. You have also stated that at first when you were starting your channel you were doing things the way others were doing and you became unhappy and you scrapped everything and decided that you were going to do things your way and look what has happened. Your statement from the beginning is that you are a lover of all kinds of music which allows you to listen to all kinds of music fresh and we get to enjoy your reactions. All the recommendations that I see in the comments are all outstanding and I look forward to your reactions 😊 Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍

George Jones felt every word that he sang, and his own emotions came out through his vocals. He lived most of what he sang about! There has never been another to convey such emotion the way that he did. He said that he loved ballads, things that make you feel, but during his live shows he said that he had to throw in some fast/happy songs to bring his own mood back up, because the sadness of the stories would start to bring him down. I'm surprised that a lot of people these days that are discovering George for the first time, they get to this song they don't realize that the man died. This whole song is taking place at the mans funeral. That is what makes the song so unimaginably sad, the man loved her until he died. I took my wife 30 years ago to her first Jones concert, she wasn't really a country fan, she barely knew who George was, and she was irritated that I was taking her to a country music show. I will NEVER forget this, Jones started singing this song, he got to the chorus and I turned and looked at my wife, her mascara was running down her face and she was openly sobbing. I put my arm around her, and she said "that man can sing unlike anyone that I have ever heard". She has been his number one fan ever since!
One of my favorite George Jones songs is a song from later in his career called "Where the Tall Grass Grows". He sings a line that said "I would sooner build a fire and crawl across it slow, than to face those burning memories where the tall grass grows"... such a powerful statement and Jones delivered it so wonderfully well. Check that song out if you ever get time.

Every song of Mr. George Jones is amazing. I recommend listening to "Choices" by George. It is another real good song.

The line in this song that always destroys me is "he went crazy now and then". I can feel that in my innermost being!!!

Hi Aileen! I’m 53. I’ve always been a metal head. I can’t stand country music. It seriously makes me psychotic! With that being said I do like some Johnny Cash. And since I was a kid I’ve always secretly liked this song. I have chronic PTSD and anxiety. I’m drawn to morbid meaningful sad songs that make you feel something!

My grandparents were married for 50+ years and he always told her he’d love her til the day he died. And at his funeral she played this song for him. It’s still hard for me to hear this song but it’s a deep love song.

I would suggest "The One I Loved Back Then" ( a more upbeat song) and "The Grand Tour" another sad song. George Jones was brilliant at being able to convey motion. In his fun songs, you see an emotional impact still. However, his sad songs strike at the heart. He had struggles with alcoholism and was divorced by one of his wives (Tammy Wynette) who I think he never fully got over. To me that is the emotion he taps into in songs like this and The Grand Tour. Thanks for a fun reaction.

Most people don't get this song on the first listen. It's so easy to miss the meaning in that very first line that explains the whole song

My Grandfather used to sing this song all the time around the house. When he passed, at the funeral, it stayed on repeat in my mind. I think of him often, and when I think of him, I think of this song as well.

If you want more country music, I recommend George Strait's “Amarillo By Morning”. It’s a country classic

Great reaction, great song. I've been heartbroken by a girl, whom I loved very much. But she started playing games and I broke up with her while still loving her to death. It's been hell for a few months. Men, be men and understand, when a woman leaves, she already has someone lined up, let her go, work on yourself, join a gym, get hobbies and never ever take her back.

That particular combo of instruments will break your heart into pieces, all by themselves.
Then you've got those lyrics with George's voice and style... just a huge classic. Edited.. Yes. He's known pain. That's what you picked up on.👍

At one point this was the saddest song every sung. I think "Whiskey Lullaby", 'Stay" and "Travelling Soldier" might have passed it, but this song is special. As sad as it is, it's a really touching love song.

Some songs you must listen closely to, and this is one of those. That line "They placed a wreath upon his door", refers to a custom of identifying a local death by placing a wreath, usually dark, on the door. When George sang "First time I'd seen him smile in years", it was a reference to morticians back in the day putting a slight smile on the deceased' face. Yes, you should listen again, uninterrupted by the camera. You can hear the original studio version much better, with no audience reacting to this huge hit for George. RIP Mr. Jones. We loved you dearly.
