Watch the live version at Tanglewood 1970. They are even better live.
This song is about someone trying to write a song and he notices it is 25 or 26 minutes to 4 am.

The alternative explanation is that it is about two forms of LSD which had different effects. Robert Lamm said in interviews it was about trying to write a song but he may have had good reasons to say that.

This song is written by their keyboardist Robert Lamm. He's stated that the song came about with he was in the studio between "25 or 26 to 4am" with writer's block trying to find something to write about. So he decided to write about his feelings about the writers block and the way it made him feel so tired at that hour of the morning. Really good tune and a good reaction to it. Thanks.

Great band from the 70's-80's. They were a rock & roll band with horns & blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, & pop music. They had a lot of great songs such as "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "Feelin' Stronger Everyday", "Questions 67 & 68", "I'm A Man", "If You Leave Me Now", "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", "Saturday In The Park", "Colour My World", "You're The Inspiration", "Will You Still Love Me?", "Look Away", "Old Days" etc.

Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will make you want an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor!
When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He approached their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and a guitar player that's better than me! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.

The band was on a crunch to push out a last track for this album. They had rented a space away from all distractions and sitting around all night hammering out the music but had no words. Someone came into the room; it was a janitor. One of the band members asked him what time it was. He looked at his wrist and said I don't have a watch on but its about 25 or 6 to 4 in the morning. If this is Your Jam they have a bunch like it. Try "Saturday in the park", "Make me smile" or "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" All are in this same genre with a happy strong jazzy summer feel.

Original Chicago 1968-1978 is a giant rabbit hole of hits. Later after Terry Kath (lead guitar) dies they become a power ballad band in the 80s and 90s with occasional memories of past glory. Three lead singers, this is Peter Cetera (bass), you should check out Saturday in the Park to hear Robert Lamm (keyboard) on lead and Make Me Smile to hear Kath lead.

There are two eras of Chicago. There's the Terry Kath era with their original guitarist from their founding on February 14, 1967 to Terry's accidental death on January 23, 1978, and then the post-Kath sappy ballad era. With Terry in the band, they were a kick-ass rock band that blended prog rock, jazz, blues, funk, R&B, and Latin percussion (adding Laudir de Oliviera starting on Chicago VI as a session percussion player, full member after Chicago VII). I grew up in their Terry Kath era and the later stuff went to disco then soft pop which was a commercial success but does not appeal to me. Folks who discovered them in the pop era of "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" under Peter Cetera and David Foster's soft influence would be stunned to find out they had real balls in their early years.

The band was ready to split, and Foster replaced Serraphine because he couldn’t produce anymore original sounding drum beats, then he along with Cetera, wrote some softer songs and power ballads, and that made the band relevant again. The first ten years with guitarist Terry Kath are a favorite for many of us, as the band definitely changed direction for many years after. Some of that change, to be fair, kept them scoring on the charts to be sure. But 25 or 6 To 4 is early Chicago at its finest, and definitely my personal favorite. I've seen them several times. Back in the 70's was by far the best. I've seen them with Huey Lewis & The News (awesome). The last time I saw them, they played with Earth, Wind & Fire, which was phenomenal. Two completely different genres came together, and a massive party happened. But nothing can replace the late great Terry Kath. RIP

To continue a true CHICAGO exploration, go back to their debut album called CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) and please react to
    >INTRODUCTION (their very 1st song)
    >BEGINNINGS (their first hit song)
    >QUESTIONS 67&68
You'll get to hear all 3 lead vocalists and get a great feel for their great talent for jazz funk fusion.
Make sure you use the studio ALBUMS (not a compilation) because compilations sometimes use the short versions.

The guitarist, Terry Kath, was amazing. Jimi Hendrix was a huge fan of his. Unfortunately, his talent gets unrecognized due to his early death and the fact that Chicago's "big band sound" is what it's known for. Whenever I hear the radio edit of this song in the car (which cuts out the guitar solo), I flip out.

This song, which became one of Chicago's biggest hits, was originally intended to just be an "album filler" (a song that was made off-handedly because the band needed to fill the album -- hence the name -- and wa never meant for release as a single). The story behind the song -- allegedly -- is that the members Chicago needed one more song to finish their second album and were coming up empty. The various members of the group were sitting around the studio, too tired to be very creative, which is when Robert Lamm turned to James Pankow and asked, "What time is it, anyway?"
Supposedly, Pankow squinted at the clock on the wall and replied that it was "25, maybe 26 minutes to 4 o'clock" (in the morning). Lamm was thus inspired to write a song about being up until Oh-God-Thirty in the morning, trying to write one last song to fill an album and failing. I don't know how true that story really is, but it sounds like a story that *ought* to be true, even if it isn't.

    • @craigw1911
      @craigw1911 3 месяца назад

Incorrect. The song came to writer Robert Lamm's mind as he was up in the middle of the night after a gig. Band members were living in rented homes in Hollywood, they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go. Lamm, the keyboard player, was awake in the middle of the night and staring out the window of the rented house and saw the flashing neon lights in the distance as he was composing and dealing with writer's block. He stared at the clock across the room and in the dimness couldn't make out the time, if it was 25 minutes to 4 AM or 26 minutes to 4 AM. He jotted down "25 or 6 to 4" as a shorthanded way of noting the time and had it in the lyrics as a filler, figuring he would put something else in later. In the daytime, he presented the song to the rest of the band and they kept the line in there. The other band members were not involved when Lamm was working on the lyrics, he was by himself.
