    It bothers me a lot these days when a lot of record collecting just becomes like Stamp/Collecting when it's more about the "markings" I.e shrink wrap, hype stickers, alignment of apples! etc etc. I just want to play the music. Like the saying goes "It's in the grooves that counts" I buy sixties, seventies and Beatles. I don't care if they're reissues or on cd. I just like to listen to music.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад +37

      Simon Beswick - I like the music too, but all those other things (for me personally) are also important. My thing is, I can never understand why people won't just allow people to like what they like when it comes to this particular hobby.

      Simon Bewick I buy reissues all the time because I want the best quality. Although it's more expensive it's worth the price

      I don’t understand why it would bother you???? I think its interesting to hear and watch people so into their music that all the details you mentioned matter to them and to me at times. I’ve made purchases on albums I already have just for the hype sticker, to me it just adds to the already vintage or art work. Oh and by the way it doesn’t bother me at all with the type of collector you are, I’m just glad to know you enjoy music and it makes you happy and that’s what counts. Enjoy!!!!

    All is fair in love and war (and vinyl collecting).. first come first serve. Since he's new to the album and didn't have a copy, and you have one in shrink, I'd have been happy to see it go to someone who needed it more than you do. Since you asked what we thought. Looks like you did pretty well anyway. I'm always just sad to see all the brilliant music you don't pay attention to over your Beatles finds, but hey that's what you love so those other amazing albums you flipped through will go to a good home too. That was a nice collection, other than I'd have gone bankrupt taking what I wanted from it. lol. Cool Video

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад +4

      Vinyl CollectorJames - Well, I couldn't buy all 1000 albums even if I wanted them all now, could I? Anyway, I don't think the other guy 'needed' the Beatles album, not at all (you have to know him). But thanks for your opinion. You're right, of course, about "all's fair"; just that I'm vocalizing my disappointment.

    I love the dynamic you have there, its clear you have a relationship with them and spend money, I work retail in a place with limited and we have customers that that just miss things and there are people who get real upset. We have people like Greg there who buy things because 1 they don't have it or 2 they want more/another one. or 3. the internet told them they could resell it (which is illegal for alcohol). 5 it was highly rated. 6. because its perceived as rare. But we also have customers (like true beatles junkies) who just love a certain style of beer and want to drink a barrel aged doppelbock and the really like doppelbock, and no one makes one let alone a barrel aged one. You can liken it nerd wise to: For greg its beatle and its MINT I want it where as to some (apparently you) who love the beatles and would love to own such a great album in such good condition.
    From a retailers point of view we really try to adhere to the first one in the store gets the product. It's Hard for a Retailer to gauge who would get more enjoyment out of a product and it can be awkward when two good customers come in and want the last of something, but at the end of the day its a flat mark up the product is on the shelf to pay the rent ASAP. It stinks missing something cool but at the end of the day there is always another Limited Beer/Record something that would make you just as happy
    Cheers

    You were upset that he didn't know what songs were on Beatles 65, but isn't the point of buying the record? If you already know the record by heart (and already own several copies of it), then you probably don't really need it!

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад +4

      TrustMeI'mBlack - Judging things for myself, yeah I feel I "need" it (though of course the only real needs in life are food, water, shelter - I get that). I've never seen a copy that pristine in the shrink wrap, and that, after all, is my main goal if you watch my Beatles Finds vids - especially when it comes to Beatles records which I know and love 100%. And since you don't know the guy, I must tell you that he's not really interested in playing the records, he just loves minty copies in shrink wrap (I have almost the same reputation in a way, yet I am a severe record listener as compared to this guy!). He sometimes buys three or four copies of an album if he gets it home and the inner paper sleeve is bent a little. He takes records out of the jackets and places them on the turntable... he wants the wax to be 100% FLAT; if he sees the record even slightly wavering, he dismisses it (it doesn't have to be warped, just ever so slightly non-flat). If his aim is to hear the music for his first time, he could obviously hear it without buying the record. I am not denying that anyone has a right to buy what they want for whatever reason they want; I'm just expressing my disappointment. And again I'll repeat that I once let him have an REM disc that he desperately wanted, even though I was going to buy it (a part of the video everyone is neglecting). So much for reciprocation.

    • @trustmeimblack1620
      @trustmeimblack1620 7 лет назад +4

      Okay, I wasn't aware that you all were in such fierce competition for getting the gold. In your case, it seemed like you wanted to buy those Stones records because you started getting into their music, which sounds like the best reason to buy any record. I don't know why the store owner was discouraging you from buying them, or maybe he just like yanking folks' chains for his personal pleasure, like when he made that poor lady give him a little head before he would buy her records! Now I'm thinking maybe he schedules the good shipments of Beatles stuff for when he knows you won't be around, just to burn you. :)

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад +3

      TrustMeI'mBlack - I've always liked The Stones. Yes, the owner loves yanking everyone and anyone's chain(s). But at least it makes for fun videos. :)

    Joe, this was one of your most powerful videos for all of us that have experienced the "agony of defeat" as well as the "thrill of victory". I have been there, fellow collector! As for the albums.....Lord God almighty, that's a collection with titles that aren't gonna go cheap...not with the miles of shrink wrap and original hype & price stickers. I would expect Princeton Record Exchange to get a haul like that...not your local corner non-descript shop! I'm lucky only in that I can look at a lot of those titles & say, "Been there, done that, know the songs. Thanks Again for a GREAT video!

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      Monaural$2.98 - Yep, like I conceded in the video, you win some and you lose some. All part of the hobby. Just more disappointing (to me, anyway) when someone who scores a cherished album over you isn't even that interested in it, really. Or when the store owner, who knows what a huge fan of a certain artist you are, sells it from under you, and then doesn't even tell you, hoping you'd never find out.

    • @stevederda6447
      @stevederda6447 7 лет назад +1

      I'm really surprised with all The Beatles vinyl you buy from "your store", that the owner doesn't always give you first crack. I guess you have some competition from other collectors looking for the same type of Beatles vinyl. Good luck when the next "minty-shrink" collection comes in,,,,,,,,you might need it.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      Steve Derda - I think even the owner would concede that I'm his biggest Beatles buyer there. But consider also, that I did pass up many records here that I've already got in "Grade A Shape" -and I don't need everything every time. So there will always be many pieces to go around to others, too. Hell, even in this very video I passed up on that CD Box Set.

    T'is the way of the world. There's all kinds of instances where people fall into things that they may not appreciate as much as others. I've been "scooped" plenty of times by people like that, but here's the way I look at it. What I miss out on is just fine because I convince myself that something better is just around the corner. I can't tell you how many times I've been outbid on Ebay, for example, only to have the same item come up again in better condition and at a cheaper price. Its all about patience. I often pray, "Lord give me patience and please be quick about it".

    • @jldraw
      @jldraw 7 лет назад

      Good analogy Paul. I look at it a similar way in that like I guess many people, I started collecting Beatles music when I was quite young. Back in those days, I would go into record shops well aware that I couldn't afford 99% of the items for sale. That didn't make me any less of a passionate fan but it did mean more oftentimes than not, the items I coveted went home with other collectors. So I try to keep that in context nowadays when I either experience or hear about people being "scooped" because they really are first world problems from my vantage point anyhow.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      FitToBeTieDyed - True in general, but you just don't see original 1960's Beatles albums still in shrinkwrap as if they were just newly bought, every day.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      jldraw - I just saw a notification from you (is it deleted?) where you wrote: "I don't think people missed the bit about the REM disc, instead I would hazard a guess that to most of us it just doesn't matter all that much. I mean this sort of stuff happens every day"..... Well, to this I'll say I think it's incredible that people in the comments are so bent out of shape about me expressing my disappointment with having missed out on a record to someone else, but yet they feel that it's of no significance at all that I was kind-hearted and thoughtful enough to recently forego an REM disc that 'I' wanted, and gave it to this very same guy who really, really, was hot for it. I mean if friendly reciprocation is not deemed important to these viewers, then I can't understand why they're on high horses chiding me vocalizing disappointment about missing a record.

    • @jldraw
      @jldraw 7 лет назад

      Yeah I scrubbed it because I felt other users had already borne out my point and what's the use of beating a dead horse? But I guess I was trying to figure out where you were coming from in this video and others like it that you have posted in the past? Perhaps I'm wrong but it seems as if you believe there should be this dichotomy that exists between shop keepers/diehard (regular) collectors where shop keepers don't sell from under the noses of regular customers and that the collectors themselves don't buy from underneath the noses of each other. So that is the first part and the second part would be the idea that records should either be offered first to the diehard collectors of that particular band and/or are better off in their collections than with the general public or casual collectors because they can appreciate them more?
      In the case of the REM/Beatles '65 issue, I think the key difference is that in the case of the REM disc that Greg wanted, you both were in the store at the time and interested in the same item and you did him a solid by allowing him to take home an item, he really wanted. But as I understand it, you weren't even in the shop when Greg was going through the stacks and picked out "Beatles '65", so in order for him to reciprocate he would've basically had to have had you in the back of his mind as he was going through the stacks, intentionally bypassing Beatles records because he thought that you might be interested in that particular title. So that's the idea there, that in one case you were both in the store essentially having a discussion/negotiation over an item you both wanted and in the other case you have Greg in the store solo, not keeping you in mind by bypassing an item that he thought you might've been interested in.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      jldraw - Oh there was no dead horse beaten on the "reciprocation" point ...because practically nobody even cared to pay any heed to it! :) .... Look, I don't know how many times I can concede (and I did state it in the end of this video actually) that "Greg's a good guy", "all's fair", and "win some, lose some" when it comes to "first come, first served" in this crazy record collecting thing of ours. With my "dichotomy" thing, I am not really speaking for the whole world at large, but only for this one particular store situation and the way I think Joe and I are together. I help Joe out a lot in the store, clean records for him and things (I don't expect or ask for pay - it's just a gesture), go on trips and lug some records for him, etc. and thus, perhaps I expect him to give me first dibs on Beatles stuff. (To be fair, Joe often DOES; I want to be clear on this.. but that's why sometimes it's befuddling when he doesn't). ....... Of course I understand too that there are other Beatles customers, but I'd bet Joe would tell you I'm his #1 buyer in that category. And bear in mind that there are often lots of Beatles-related items I pass up (even in this video I bypassed a CD box set), so it's not as if I'm always going to take 100% of the Beatles items which arrive in the store - often times I own much of it already anyway..... Finally, although Greg and I were not in the store together when he saw BEATLES '65, rest assured I went through his mind when he snagged that album that he didn't really have a passion for! Just as I know he loves The Who, and I even mentioned LIVE AT LEEDS (an album he wants in mint shape) in the video for him, before I knew he'd already dug through the bins and saw it himself. .... So I'm really only talking about this particular store, and these 'friends' (as I like to consider them).

    Beatles are one thing but come on now I'd go broke on those crates and love every bit of it. Ah the Ravi's... that is a sweet Goodnight Vienna damn! You aren't worthy! Omgawd! That white album! Revolver! Ugh Sick... I'll take Garden Party and the Squeeze albums for kicks. Ah dammmutt. Great shop I love those guys. If he's not to big a B fan trade him for it.

      dixielandfarm - I wish you much success in your endeavor. I've said I was going to cut back and focus purely on Beatles-related stuff, but I still find myself intrigued with non-Beatles stuff all the time. Still going to try and moderate that somewhat, too.

      Look online, you always have people selling stuff that they do not know the true value of. A house clearance for example following a death, people just want rid so sell for cheap prices.

  • @jshdllrd
    @jshdllrd 7 лет назад +12

    Since you said you'd like to know what we think...
    (Since tone is difficult to convey online, I say this in a friendly manner as I would to any buddy standing in front of me)
    I honestly felt like questioning him on what songs were on '65 was a little out of line. Just because he doesn't know the track listing doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to buy the record if he saw it first.
    For example, my store just got in a massive Zep collection. I don't collect them but I've been holding out for mint copies of II and IV for a quite some time-to get to know the albums. I couldn't tell you more than a couple songs on each. But that doesn't mean I don't have a right to buy them before a diehard Zeppelin fan.
    And the same could be said for you with those Stones albums, right? I know you like their earlier stuff, but surely there's someone out there who likes the Stones in the way you like The Beatles. Seems like a borderline double standard.
    You have a great collection of Beatles albums. But you can't have them all! :)

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад +3

      jshdllrd - Thanks for the honest comment. Re: the Led Zeppelin point... of course anyone has a "legal" right to buy the album first! :) I'd say it's more of an unspoken ethical thing. .... Of course at the end of the video I conceded too that, of course, "first come, first served", "all's fair", and words to that effect. I was just expressing my disappointment, that's all. It's amazing to me though that everyone who has commented on this topic has completely missed the bit where I said how I once gave up an REM disc because this same guy was so keen on it and loved them more than I do. ... Of course the same can be said about the Rolling Stones albums and me taking them ahead of a huge Stones Fan, you're right on that - but however, there really aren't any hardcore Stones regulars at this store (that I am aware of, that is!). So in a way, it's not quite the same thing. ... But in any event, I do realize that I was being rather extreme here while acknowledging at the same time "every man for himself when it comes to records, and fair is fair, etc". .. But I'm not going to pretend I was not both disappointed and in a way kind of betrayed, considering the REM scenario where I let the same guy have it when I grabbed it first. Reciprocation is a nice thing too, no? :)

      MeanMr Mayo I hear ya. Yes it is sort of a having one another's backs kind of thing.
      You know, two or three times now, I have experienced the EXACT same situation with my local record store. The owner received an amazing collection of Beatles/Beatles-related gems (Mother picture sleeve, Walking In the Park With Eloise picture sleeve, promos, Something New UK Export, NM German/UK presses, you name it). But they kept them in the back room for quite some time before telling me. Then when I was actually "granted access" they weren't for sale yet...Eventually I was able to put my name on several, then purchase them later, but the whole situation was frustrating at the time.
      I should also add that I have a close relationship with my store, like you. I'm in all the time and they know I'm a Beatles collector.
      And even though I don't comment all that often, I've watched (quite literally) every one of your videos over the past few years. So I understand the dynamic there and it seems Joe likes to mess with you sometimes because he likes you.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      jshdllrd - Thanks, and I do suppose you'd need to be familiar with all or most of my vids over the years to understand where I'm coming from. Some people who just hit this video cold are not going to understand. I mean I don't take things like this for granted in any other general shop I walk into where I don't have a relationship or history with the owners.

    I used to collect Blondie the way you collect Beatles. Oh, my God - those crates on the floor were sheer torture. Highway 61 in mono with the shrink and sticker? And was that mono Procol Harum sealed?? I saw more Dylan, Beach Boys, Byrds, Stones and God-knows-what-else in shrink and in mono! I can really relate to how you felt as you started pulling them out. I'm going to have to come up there, that's all there is to it. I'm going crazy!! Unbelievable collection. God knows how he found it. Never stuff like that around here! You must have spent a good bit. You passed at least ten albums in those original bins that I would love to have in those bins. You are spoiled, my friend (LOL)! I was getting light headed just watching you go through the second set of bins. Holy crap Joe! Between The Buttons in mono in the shrink and you put it back? OMG!!! And now you are passing up The Beatles EP CD box. I'm gonna faint! Best collection I have ever seen. Period! My copy of Beatles 65 is on Apple in VG condition so... Tim Allen - Hi Tim.. I was nervous as hell going through that collection, and it didn't help that owner Joe was pressuring me. But I wound up spending a hefty amount, so I had to quickly pick and choose what I thought was most preferential to me (that being Beatles-related stuff). I can always go back and pick up the Stones LPs too if they're not gone; that way it only APPEARS I'm spending less money by purchasing on different days instead of in one lump sum!
