    --------------------------------------
Sweet Home is a survival horror role-playing video game developed and published by Capcom for the Family Computer in 1989. It is based on the Japanese horror film of the same name and tells the story of a team of five filmmakers exploring an old mansion in search of precious frescos hidden there. As they explore the mysterious mansion, they encounter hostile ghosts and other supernatural enemies. The player must navigate the intricately laid out mansion, battling with the enemies, and the five main characters with the limited weapons and health restorative items available. The narrative moves forward regardless of whether the characters stay alive, and leads to its five different endings.
The game was directed by Tokuro Fujiwara, who previously worked primarily on arcade games such as Ghosts 'n Goblins (1985). Fujiwara toured the film's set to gather inspiration for the game, and the film's director Kiyoshi Kurosawa gave Fujiwara permission to take some liberties with the game's script. Sweet Home was released in December 1989 exclusively in Japan, where it gathered generally favorable reception and was considered better than the film. The game was never localized to western markets, likely because of the game's gruesome imagery and the unpopularity of role-playing games outside Japan.
In retrospect, Sweet Home is considered a landmark game and is often cited for laying the groundwork for the survival horror genre. It served as the main inspiration behind Resident Evil (1996) which was a massive critical and commercial success, launching a multimedia franchise. Later games in the future continue to pull inspiration from the game through the use of quick time events, inventory management, and ghost story elements. Sweet Home's Metroidvania-style exploration, storytelling methods, and horror elements have been cited as precursors to key elements found in other successful games decades later.

This is easily one of the best horror games ever made. It’s impressive what they were able to do on the Famicom. This game is all about atmosphere and the creepy mystery of the mansion.
Glad to see another person discover this overlooked classic.

Absolutely! One of the best ever. Definitely my retro treat of the year so far that I’ve played!

Fun fact:Sweet Home was also a huge inspiration for the original Corpse Party in 1996. The creator, Makoto Kedwin has mention this in several articles.
Lots of parallels can be made. 5 main characters are trapped inside a haunted building without a way of escaping, as well as use top down perspectives and RPG elements. In both games, the group is split up into two parties (or more in Sweet Home), they are forced to explore their surroundings and have to face off against the spirit holding them captive in the end. If a character dies, it heavily affects the ending.
It's funny how the Resident Evil and Corpse Party series took inspiration from the same game but are vastly different.

It's also revolutionary for RPG's of that time to simply not be a grindfest. You can easily solve the game without grinding and if you do, the max lvl of 20 is relatively quickly achieved. I finished the game in less than 8h the 1st time around and needed 5h the 2nd. Not to mention it's the 1st and only horror RPG for the famicom. Yet you never find it on those 'best' nes RPG's or horror games lists.

It was a super unique experience and was honestly probably my favorite game that I played in 2022 other than Elden Ring. Wish I could experience it again for the first time! Thanks for watching.

@@Bitsandglory You're welcome. You certainly did it justice. And your intro gave me a chuckle. Did you know that they advertised for the movie in the game commercial? ruclips.net/video/AS_dwfrUNb0/видео.html
Too bad the flick wasn't half as good. I'd like to think of sweet home as a game anomaly. I mix of genres that you don't usually see yet works beautifully. Like Actraiser for the snes, a one of a kind experience.

If this is connected to the RE series even slightly, how does this affect the Buffalo Bills superbowl odds?
