Seriously I donno anything about SNMP. But with your detailed explanation given me an idea about it. Really cool explanation. I don't have any knowledge about these type of networking informations. But hat's off to you for your good work. Just listened 1 time and I got a clear idea about it. It's just because of your clear explanation with correct methods. I'm really thanking you.
Thanks Eli! This was really helpful. I'm a CCNA student at a community college. We're currently working on our capstone project and I was trying a trial of What'sUp Gold on our lab network and couldn't figure it out. I just "walked in and tried to use the software off the bat" like you said, and was really confused, as you said. However, your explanation really cleared things up for me. Thanks a lot. I subscribed to your channel and will consult more of your videos on any future projects I have difficulty with.
I'm currently revising for my ComTIA A+ certification and am still fairly new to networking etc, I find it hard to revise but your videos just bi-pass that for me, thanks for all the help in this and all of your other videos!
Somewhere around $30K... basically it will depend on the company you work for. If you get hired for internal support at a large company you'd be looking at 36K plus benefits, if you are answering questions for "clients" of the company, or you're at a smaller operation you would be looking at about $12 an hour...
It would be useful to do a second video on how Snmp works, illustrating basic concepts of MIBs, OIDs, Traps. It is also interesting to mention that Snmp uses UDP instead of TCP for communication between manager and agents. This generated furious criticism and sarcasm from "International Standards bodies" when Snmp was proposed (80s). But the Snmp designers realized that in network management the reliability had to be built in the application (not in the protocol). Pure stroke of genius.
thank you very much Eli ... i am watching your videos from like 2 years now started from osi and tcp/ip your content is great after 5 years .... hats off. love from INDIA...!!!
Thank you. All the CompTIA exam prep materials only superficially cover SNMP and talk about it 'theoretically'. It would have been nice to know that SNMP is actually made to be useful by a larger software package.
I was about complete reading the whole chapters in the book preparing for the midterm, and yet I could't understand the concept without examples in the way you did.. it's much easier when I listen to your explanation than reading something look like a puzzle .. Thank you so so so much for the effort
OMG YOU ARE THE BEST! I just had a lecture on this and our lecture is so fricking bad I literally went to sleep. Even after looking at the notes myself I was so lost. Listening to you for 16mins made me understand EVERYTHING. I dont know why universities dont get better lectures like you (and this is University of Sydney!). Your 16mins explained me what the lecturer couldnt for 120mins.....THANKYOU!
Superb Explanation. Great work as always. Respect for Mr. Eli the Computer GEEK For those who are criticizing why don't you guys make in depth videos and upload and share your expert views? or you are just another criticizer? Please don't take it personal and share what you have and let all get benefit from your Knowledge.
Amazing video! Thank you for your time in making this available. It's always great to have a nice easy explanation of something, then to read further once you have grasped the main concept. Cheers mate!
Im confused about the open port & firewalls. So have firewalls set up on all connected computers without blocking the SNMP ports right? Im assuming the hacker could just connect to one and block it anyway.
Thanks for this! But I have a question. Do OIDs play a part in SNMP? For example if I want to monitor the antivirus definition on the computers in my network, does the SNMP need to know the OID to this definition? Is that all it needs?
It depends on the device. SNMP works on workstations, servers, PDUs, UPSs, network devices, a whole host of things. Different suites work in different ways. You're going to need to be more specific.
Thanks again Eli for crystal clear explanation on SNMP, ,Can you make up a follow up video on the security to be used to avoid managers disabling SMNP,
How do you have a 16 minute video about SNMP with no mention of MIBS? Its great that you put these together but in explaining the protocols it would help if you were using technical verbiage where applicable.
Thanks for the education (again.) Question about best practices, I inherited a setup at a non-profit (2 servers, 100 pc's) and am in the process of gaining knowlegde. There is an installation of spiceworks running, but it is installed on one of the servers. Should this reside on a workstation instead, or does it really matter? Also, is there a way to test that SNMP is actually working once you think you have it deployed?
Hello Eli! Quick question... In terms of configuring your trap, how do set it up? Is it accomplished with scripting languages such as perl, shell, etc... Or is it done by you and object oriented programming language?
I'm working on my cisco certifications. What kind of places should I look for a job once I get my CCNA? I live in a fairly small town (Brunswick Ga, about an hour from Jacksonville Fl). But I'm not sure what kind of places need help with cisco routers and switches. Do you have any suggestions? FLETC might, but I don't even know how to get on their base and talk to them. Then there's the hospital. I'm sure they have a network. Maybe I should try every place I suspect has a network?
Hello Eli! Quick question, regarding SMNP theres 3 versions as you know, atm im a trainee at a company and theyre interested in implementing it. But im not sure what version to use, since the V3 is a bit slower for encryption maybe v2c is enough? just wish to have more flesh on my bones before i ask them and tell them about the choices. :) So far i've downloaded MXview and SNMPc to try with and MXview sofar is super. Thanks in advance and Great videos! future eth-hacker :)
Question: Does SNMP present any network vulnerabilities if installed in an enterprise environment. I'm asking because there are certain gov't agencies which will not implement SNMP as their network monitoring software.
Thank you for this video! I couldn't figure it out after googling it forever and textbook explanation didn't help either. This video instantly explained it all super easily! I do have a question though, what if SNMP itself fails? Is that even a thing? How would you troubleshoot that if it happens? Also are the manager and agent usually sold together? If not, what if one software requires one port and the other requires another port? Or is it all configurable and doesn't even matter?
Eli do you think CCENT or CCNA will be enough to land me a help-desk or support tech position so i can gain more experience in IT particularly networking? I have very little experience other than installing VoIP phones for a hosted VoIP company. Also what do you think are some others ways to gain more experience in networking. Thanks.
Is it really true that SNMP packages are $50-$100 per agent? And is agent the same as workstation/winterm? Another question I have is: why would the previous admin turn off the SNMP service? Wouldn't the admin have to leave it on? Just curious. I appreciate the refresher on this.
cool but how can i create a trap eg. that the disk is almost full? under windows i see ony in traps where to send that alert. where can i set tresholds?
Thank you. You explained it much better in 16 minutes than my teacher in hours! regards from germany.
Hallo zu Deutschland!

Great video, Eli. Really made it easy to understand compared to the book I was going through. Wish you had done all of the CCNA topics!
Awesome explanation in plain English. So many technical people speak in acronyms. You don't. Hurray!

sir!! i bet your the best .i have exam on network security i can guarantee of crashing a question on SNMP
Cool. So, a bear trap traps bears, a fly trap traps flies, and an SNMP trap traps specified network management information for analysis :)
Thanks a lot , you made me good in understanding SNMP..
God Bless you Regards from Dublin

Great explanation just bravo!
So nicely presented, thank you!
