SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol.
SNMP is a standardized protocol used to collect and organise device information on a network. It does this over UDP port 161 (Traps are received on port 162).
There are three versions of SNMP.
- SNMPv1 which is the original version of SNMP
- SNMPv2c - This is the revised version which introduced some enhancements. Most notably the use of community strings for security. You can think of a community string like a password.
- SNMPv3 - Which is another improvement adding authentication and encryption. This version is much more secure than the previous versions.
A device that is SNMP enabled is known as an agent. An SNMP agent has several objects that can be interacted with. Some objects are part of the industry standard, and some will be vendor-specific for this device.
For example, this router will have objects for, name, uptime, interfaces, and the routing table to name just a few.
Each object is assigned an object identifier or OID. The OID is a sequence of numbers, which at first glance can look like an IP address. This is used to identify the object in a file called a MIB which stands for Management Information Base.
To interact with these object, we need something called a network management system or NMS. The NMS is a piece of software that can communicate with the SNMP agent.
There are a few ways the NMS can speak to the agent. The first way is by using GET requests. Get message include get, getNext and getBulk. They are used to actively request information from the agent.
The second way we can talk to an agent is by using SET requests. A set request is used to change a value on the agent.
The last method I want to talk about is Traps and Informs. Agents use traps and informs to actively communicate with the NMS. The agent can send a trap or inform to the NMS when an event occurs on the device.
Traps and informs are two different types of massage but they both do the same thing. The difference is that informs are reliable. An inform message will wait for an acknowledgement from the NMS. If it doesn’t receive one, it will resend the inform. A trap on the other hand is sent and then forgotten. Even though informs are consider reliable, both still use UDP.

Basically, SNMP protocol used for monitoring network.
Hey, thanks for the awesome vid, but I have one question. Is the process similar when setting up Nagios as a monitoring system -> could I just use nagios instead of PTRG?
Thanks
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Yes, I would imagine the process to be pretty much the same on Nagios.
Can you PLEASE do a BGP video?!?
Thanks. Now do a wireshark
Thank you, When we will be FULL CCNA course
The course will be ready as soon as possible. I'm thinking about doing a prelaunch so make sure you have registered your interest using the link in the description. 👍
Waiting for NETCONF video :)
Thanks Stailian! I'll add this to my list of suggestions 👍
Easily explained
Which software do you use to make the video? BTW Video is awesome...
Security Not My Problem. back then with snmp v1 and 2c.
Plz make video on Evpn
Thanks for the suggestion Sajid. I'll add it to my list.
just have a doubt.....where is all the commands are running( which software) is it powershell?
I seem to be missing something - at 5:52 you switch to a command line screen, saying "here is my PC". What utility is that screen displaying and what is the target that you're sending those commands to?
His PC is probably console connected to the router so he can have access to the CLI of the router. The pc also happens to be the NMS where it would manage the SNMP agent which is the router as well. I could be wrong but this is what I understood from it.
@@vinushanponniah8368 if only I understood what you're talking about, I might think this information was very helpful. No offence.
"🎶🎶🎶 Here come the MIB, Networking defenders 🎶🎶🎶"...get it? or am I too old lol
(Here come the Men In Black, Men In Black
Galaxy defenders)
🤣 if you're too old then so am I!
why didn't you add the SNMP Server Command in the CLI?
I just noticed, but when I skip back 10 seconds the audio gets echo-y, and when I do random stuff to make it normal again it gets like it was before wtf

1:44 Wait, Kevin Wallace said that V1 also had community strings: ruclips.net/video/tg47MZdtcAE/видео.html So which video is correct?
You're absolutely right (and of course, Kevin is as well). Edited to avoid confusion. Thanks for the heads up 👍
Can this be done in Packet Tracer
Yes definitely! A host computer or server will have a MIB browser on the Desktop tap.
@@Certbros , thank you!!
Could there not be a more simpler way to explain SNMP. ?
SNMP, S stands for Simple. Yet, especially with v3, it's anything but simple LOL
The only thing missing is commentary ..
superb
