@@Epic_C I Tried it in Late 1992(Chesapeake, VA had gotten it as one of its secret test markets). It tasted EXACTLY like Diet Pepsi, without the Aspartame. Yes, is Aftertaste was bland.
The problem with branding your drink something like Crystal Pepsi or New Coke is that when people drink it they won't consider the taste and whether they like it or not based on its own merit, but instead immediately compare it to the flavor they know.
I hadn’t had a Crystal Pepsi since I was about 9 years old, just watching about it makes me want one just to satisfy my curiosity if we’re really missing out on anything.
There was a limited release of Crystal Pepsi in Canada in 2022, I got some and did a blind test on myself and there's barely any noticeable difference from regular Pepsi.
My buddies and I were in the Dallas test market. We bought some when it first came out and were at the store to buy some more because we liked it. We mentioned it to some guy while at the store and turned out he was the Pepsi rep who gave us a stack of coupons for free 6 packs. We were drinking it for like two weeks.
I was working at Walmart in 2016 when Crystal Pepsi had its limited rerelease. Me and a few other coworkers swore by the stuff, buying bottles by the dozen to share after unloading trucks, but pretty much nobody bought it but us.
My HS in the mid 90’s had only Chrystal Pepsi left and it appeared they refused to buy any other soda for the vending machine until Chrystal Pepsi was cleared out. Needless to say we went the entire year with only Chrystal Pepsi as our soda option.
In Germany we had Crystal Pepsi in "PLUS" Stores .. in 1993 i was around 13-14 and i loved it. It was a bit more expensive (i think 10-20p a Can) but that didn't bothered me much as a Kid. Also i loved it if my Mom send me to Grocery shopping to PLUS as a Kid cause i always grabbed a Can of it and set it on the Bill. My mom checkt the Receipt and was silently grinning.
I remember drinking Crystal Pepsi both the cola and citrus ones at lunch time in High School back in the 90s when soda machines were available to students and snack machines with candy bars.
My problem with the remake of Crystal Pepsi was that it wasn't the original formula. OG Crystal Pepsi didn't have any caffeine. The caffeine addition gave it more of a bite that the original didn't have and didn't taste as smooth and refreshing as I remembered. They botched the relaunch too as far as I'm concerned..
My grandmother, who we lived with, wouldn't let me drink this growing up. She thought something was wrong with it. But I'd always get one when I wasn't around her.
I was about 13 when Crystal Pepsi first came out. I was able to buy it out of the pop machine at school when they had vending machines at the time. It didn't taste anything like a regular Pepsi.
I was turning 10 in November 1992. They had some at Food Lion in Chesapeake,VA and Mom got me a 6 Pack. It tasted like Diet Pepsi. I remember the Really Weird Aftertaste.
I own the world's largest crystal pepsi collection. Anything and everything you can imagine that was merchandise for crystal pepsi I got it. It's very simple I see a crystal pepsi video.... I click.
Glad to see my crystal Pepsi collection grace your video! Great stuff, I didn’t know about 7up clear cola! I’ll have to scour the internet to flag down a bottle!😂 😎
I really liked Crystal Pepsi when they revived it - the original was before my time. If they’d put it in cans like regular Pepsi, I’d have got it way more often, and it would have replaced the standard stuff for me.
I used to think this exact same thing, but then a buddy of mine pointed out that hiding a soda whose gimmick was its appearance in an opaque can didn't make a lot of sense. I still think the sales would have justified the packaging though!
Even though it was a bit before my time, I'd imagine that people's brains were fixed with the image of cola being brown that a clear varient might have played a mindfuck with us.
At 11:04, David Novak wasn't kidding or exaggerating about the reason for Crystal Pepsi's failure. It was promoted as tasting just like regular Pepsi, and that piqued everyone's curiosity, including myself. While it wasn't gross, it was disappointing because it tasted like watered-down Pepsi. After one try, I knew I preferred regular Pepsi, and its a pretty safe bet that most Pepsi drinkers felt the same.

As a Michigander that grew up on Vernors, and now live in Texas, it is possible to find it all over the country. Kinda like Faygo. It is not as popular but it exists.
I remember crystal pepsi in its infancy, December 14, 1992, I was drawn into this clear cola phantasmagoria. But now that I look back on it all, what the hell was I thinking?!
In the summer of 1992, I was on a backpacking trip at Philmont with the Boy Scouts. When we arrived back at base camp, there were all these Pepsi trucks test marketing Crystal Pepsi.
i worked at pizza hut during the initial release and we had a special where if you ordered 2 pizzas you got a free bottle of that stuff. at the end of every shift we usually had about 10 or 20 bottles of it that had been refused by the customer on delivery and brought back. we couldn't give that stuff away it was just gross tasting mostly and didn't stay carbonated very long either.
There was a limited release about 4-5 years ago where some markets got a supply of Crystal Pepsi. I immediately bought a bottle upon seeing it and rather prefer it to regular Pepsi, but not even close to Coca-Cola.
i thought it was more because most the soda companies had an issue of people taking empty or half empty bottles and filling them with clear liquors mainly vodka and taking them into places there where not supposed to have them
Crystal Pepsi popped up in a Kroger near me and I tried it, and I loved it so much I ended up buying several bottles every time I went and wished there were six packs available.
I was told that Crystal Pepsi would taste exactly like regular Pepsi (the only difference would be that it lacked the caramel-hued dye, which provided no flavor). So, I tried it. But it didn't taste like the original... and I wasn't enamored with the new flavor at all. When I want a clear soda, I simply drink Sprite; that flavor is pretty good. I still prefer the cola flavor... but uncolas are nice from time to time.
Crystal Pepsi was the only version of "the P word" that we allowed in our house when I was a kid. Dr Pepper was #1, Coke was #2, and Sprite and 7Up were interchangeably #3. But, when Crystal Pepsi came out, I decided to try it and I got the rest of my family to try it. We actually liked it and I was sad when they discontinued it.
I remembered really liking Crystal Pepsi when I was a kid and at some point drinking it a weird little flip switched in my head and then I didn't like the flavor anymore. Like I "realized" that there was a different taste in it (I could have easily just convinced myself there was something different in it to make it clear which made my kid brain go "ew taste bad") and couldn't drink it anymore.
My mother and I tried Crystal Pepsi and Diet Crystal Pepsi, and my mother's description is apt. She said Crystal Pepsi was lizard spit. Diet Crystal Pepsi was recycled lizard spit. I agreed with her summary.
I drank Crystal Pepsi pretty avidly when it was relaunched (same with the 2021 run of Pepsi Blue) and honestly adored it. I was also a Surge kid so I must have a taste for sodas that didn’t crack the market.
Growing up in the 90s, Crystal Pepsi was very much part of my childhood. Also going on during the 90s that would be an excellent future video topic…the Ice Beer Wars. It was even more competitive than the clear cola wars, with one brand even going so far as to sabotage their chief rival’s launch of a strong ice beer just so they could launch their own with no competition.
I worked for Pepsi then. I was a delivery driver who brought product into the store. It was also around the time they thought Pepsi was putting syringes in the cans. Spokes people then were Michal Jackson (fire in his hair), Cindy Crawford and Ray Charles. Fun times working for a national icon like Pepsi
I think it’s fair to say if you’re not a soda enthusiast the product was dead on arrival. If you’re the kinda person that goes to the store and always buys soda, the product took hold of you and never let go.
Crystal Pepsi rocked. It should have been caffeinated. And the last round, was only sold in 20 oz bottles, the most expensive and least economical ways to sell it, so that alone caused many people to not buy it at all, or to only try one or two bottles. Pepsi should have gone all in with 2 Liters, and 24 Packs of cans too.
I was so captivated by Crystal Pepsi as a kid. It didn't taste exactly like Pepsi yet was still magic in a bottle to me. Such nostalgia for it.
I drank Crystal Pepsi all the time before it disappeared. It was like the best taste ever to my ten year old taste buds.
shame i never had the chance to try it. it looks so aesthetic and probably tastes amazing too
I loved it I was just thinking about crystal Pepsi so here I am..

new coke was a marketing ploy causing the sales of classic coke to spike

I had the rerelease almost 10 years ago after never having it initially. Didn't taste like regular Pepsi, it tasted way better.
When they re-released Crystal Pepsi a few years ago, my ex-husband stockpiled on it! I had some of it, but it didn't taste like regular Pepsi to me!
There was a limited release of Crystal Pepsi in Canada in 2022, I got some and did a blind test on myself and there's barely any noticeable difference from regular Pepsi.
The 2016 rerelease tasted even better than the original tbh. This is the only soda I genuinely miss drinking.
It was a pretty transparent gimmick. I think the market just saw right through it.
