I'm 63 years old. I remember as a 5 year old child riding with my grandad in his 1965 Chevy pickup to the general store for a pack of white owl cigars and a Sunday paper. Grandpa would always grab me a bottle of mountain dew from the cooler. We didn't drink a lot of soft drinks back them, so it was always a big treat when I got one. . . . Thanks for the memories grandpa.
I am 5 years behind you, butbthe experience was pretty much tge same. Didn't drink much soft drink, and it was a real treat to even share with siblings. Fond memories of a different time.
In my 20s i was working full time and full time at college. I drank probably 12 pack a day. I never drink it now. Entirely ti much sugar and caffeine for me.
Back in high-school in the mid 90s, we would have bonfires on Friday nights. Everyone brought their own food and drink, but we would basically have a big tailgate party around a big campfire. I found out years later that I had ADHD and the caffeine was doing the opposite to me than it did to my friends.
Cubes have 24 cans, at least they do now. I think this drink is quite popular with ADHD people for that very reason, calms the nerves and focuses the mind like any other stimulant, and Mtn Dew has the most caffeine out of any other soda. I remember me and all my friends back in church youth group would drink the stuff like water. Not to mention, caffeine is incredibly addictive, like any other stimulant.
Back in the mid 90s I would go to stay with my mom in Memphis during the summer. She would enter all those random giveaways at the grocery store and entered me in a Mt Dew one and totally forgot. I got a call one day while she was at work saying that I had won, but we didn't know what they were talking about and thought it was a scam. We drove to the address and it was a huge office building. They gave me a load of EXTREME Mt Dew gear including shirts, a windbreaker, a bag, but the big item was a custom Mt Dew skateboard. I wasn't interested in skating, so I took it to a shop and they gave me like $200 for it. That was pretty cool because I was like 13 or whatever, but I kind of wish I still had it now.

Rare Old Mountain Dew by The Quare Fellas is a TOTAL JAM!!! THEY'RE SCOTTISH and I'm about 2/5 Scotch though I've yet to start on my first. My Grandpfather (McCaig) ran the top Plumbing company in Topeka Kansas. In the 60's there were always bottles of Hillbilly Themed Mountain Dew on the stairs down to the Basement. FANTA Orange in Italy in a 2 Ft. Bottle may've been my first soft drink Thrill but Mt. DEW was pretty much the first caffeine pop I'd ever been introduced to and Boy does it hold a special place in my heart. I Really Miss the dude popping the jug & the cork making a bullet hole in his Hat...!
Another aspect of the hillbilly marketing was the Darryl Waltrip #11 Mountain Dew car. As a kid, that was my first favorite driver/car. And Dew in a can is better bottles or fountain, hands down.
@@ericcrawford7207 it's hard to explain, but it shows how memories are formed, in 1966 I was 5 years old. The taste memory is tied to a specific time and location memory, the Commissary at Ft. I was a little kid in the '60's. Their commercials reminded me of the Snuffy Smith comic strip. Around 1980 i remember my buddy's hugh school age sister saying that her friends all thought that if they could have as much fun in one day as the teens in a Mountain Dew commercial did, they would consider their lives were complete and they had peaked.
Hey Weird History! Remember when they used to include toys/prizes in cereal boxes?! I think a video you guys could do an awesome job with is "Top X Prizes That Were Found in Cereal Boxes". It would hit that nostalgic nerve for people too! Love your work guys!
In India,.Dew's tagline is "Darr k aage jeet hai" which means Beyond Fear lies Victory and its a popular everyday phrase to use. Most of its ads always includes fun and cool stunts.
There was a Mountain Dew commercial at the beginning of our VHS copy of Dirty Dancing from the late 80's. It had people water-skiing in a river. We used to watch that movie all the time when I was a kid in the mid-90's, and that commercial is such an iconic childhood memory for me. I can't remember any specific Mountain Dew commercial from the 90's, except the tagline Do the Dew; none of them were as good as that 80's one.
What a great compilation! I can imagine the work that went into this video - all the commercials, the video and graphics over the years, all the research into the history of this drink. Excellent work, Weird History Food. This is my first time happening on your channel, and I am impressed (and entertained).
Due to family connections I had several bits of swag, including a real guitar, felt hillbilly hat, corncob pipe. It was so weird seeing it go "edgy" later.
I drank a lot of Dew in the '60's. I never realized they added orange flavoring in the 70's. I know it changed when they switched from cane sugar to corn syrup.
11:36 For anyone freaking out about the acidity of the soft drink, remember the same is true of orange juice, which mountain dew contains. It is why a number of cleaners use orange juice. Lemon juice too is a popular choice too. The fact is lots of foods are quite aciditic and acidic tastes are one of the primary flavors you can taste.
Unless you're mixing your OJ with loads of vinegar for a cleaning solution, you're going to end up with a very sticky mess. There's way too much sugar in OJ to effectively clean anything. Source: 7 years as a cleaner. If you have to mix your shit with vinegar, you may as well just use vinegar.
The reason Mountain Dew has such a bad reputation is bc it contained a known carcinogen until about 15 years ago Edit: and no the carcinogen was not Yellow 5. It was an additive.
I remember when Mountain Dew came out officially in 1964 while spending the summer in Ocean City MD. The boardwalk, House of the Rising Sun, and Mountain Dew. Good memories. Still drink it.
Oh boy, lots to say here… first had MD as a kid on Tom Sawyer’s Island at Disneyland (approx 1969). Never had it after that until around 1985 and it brought back those childhood memories. I went to work for Pepsi in 1991 as a delivery driver. The facility I worked at was a bottling plant so it package every type of container possible along with all the other products/flavors we carried at the time ie….Mug Root Beer, Squirt, Slice etc (oh yes, don’t forget Crystal Pepsi). On my route I had two truck stops I serviced each week. It DID NOT matter how much MD I took in the week before, they were out. I would deliver….both kinds of fountain products, cases of 6pk cans, 16 oz bottles, 12 oz long neck bottles, 2 liter bottles….all gone in those 7 days. Each truck stop had three places to stock, fuel desk, restaurant and general store. Have always had fond memories of the “Dew”
Me and my buddies had a "skate team" we made up when we were like 11-13 and we named it AMPED after Mt.dew Amp, we drank ungodly amounts of that stuff lol
I''m old enough to remember drinking 10 oz. glass bottles of Mountain Dew (which could be returned for cash deposit) with the hillbilly livery on the bottles. No mention in the video of "Bub and Pud" -- the two feuding hillbillies on the bottles at one time. I would also add that the switch from an Appalachian motif to the youthful Rocky Mountain vibe coincided with the decline of rural TV shows in the early '70s and the popularity of John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High." With the multitudes of Mt. Dew flavors currently available, I wish Pepsico would re-release the formula they used in the 1960s. It was my favorite soda as a little kid. I'd love to taste it again.
Come over to Europe and try a Mt. Dew here - "real sugar" (still can't get over the absolutely ridiculous fact that this is some kind of fancy "buzz word" in the oh-so-great US, nowadays..) and a lot less sweet overall, since Europeans can't stomach the overly sweet American products. It's still neongreen and probably not _exactly_ like the 1960's version, but it'll be a lot closer to that.
@@DatsWhatHeSaid Great idea -- thanks! Is it available most anywhere in Europe, or would I have to hunt for it? My father-in-law lives in Portugal, so I'll probably be visiting sometime in the near future.
Should be available from any of the bigger chain supermarkets all over Europe, and probably also some Portugal specific chains that I don't know about@@xkot6431! But once you're over there, Google or even (younger) supermarket clerks will surely help you out pinpointing a specific store(chain) to get your hands on it :)
I am also. I remember they cost a dime each if you had an empty bottle to leave otherwise the deposit was 2 cents for the glass bottle. They were cold and good. It's nothing to brag over but I have no doubt Ivd drank enought of them to refloat the Titanic. 12 Oz soft drink was a dime and so were those paper sacks of boiled peanuts that now go for almost 3 dollars. 10 cents a bag , 3 for a quarter and 15 bags for a dollar. YAhh Hoo Mt Dew, it ll tickle your innards.
I still remember my very first Mountain Dew. Orlando, Florida 1987. My parents took me to Disney World and the hotel we were staying at had a soda machine at the end of the hall. It was probably the first time I was allowed to use a soda machine by myself too. The only sodas my parents ever bought were Coke and Sprite so when I was presented with different choices of soda it was a mind-blowing experience. I had no idea what Mountain Dew was, I only selected it because the logo looked neat. After that first can, I was hooked and I kept pestering my mom for change so I could run back to the machine and get another Mountain Dew. I remember more about that damn soda than I do the whole trip to Disney World.
Love purple thunder. For the longest time I wasn't able to get it cause I lived nowhere near a circle k but they recently bought out mapco so now I have one close to home!
Black Label was one of my fav non-standard flavors. Wasn't happy when that got discontinued. Livewire, Voltage and Baja are probably the other different flavors I usually get.
There are quite a few discrepancies in this video. Game Fuel, as of last November, is not defunct. It had a re-release as last year's Christmas flavor. It will be re-releasing next holiday season as well along with another Game Fuel flavor, aside from the original Citrus Cherry. Dollar General does not have Sweet Lightning as their exclusive flavor: they have Maui Burst. Sweet Lightning is a restaurant exclusive flavor at KFC. Mountain Dew Rise, or after the lawsuit, Energy, is no longer in production. It has been slowing down and liquidating ever since late last year. This video was uploaded only recently, so I would have expected these facts to have been known beforehand.
I remember the first time I drank a Mountain Dew. It was in 93 and we were in vacation in a place called dog patch USA in Arkansas. From that day I was hooked.
Nice to see someone else know Mt Dew used to be an alcohol mixer before it became a soda. It actually had a song back in the day. “They call it that good old Mt Dew, And them that refuse it are few. I’ll shut up my mug If you fill up my jug With that gold old Mt Dew!”
@@Rayraywheelz I started using it after I ran out of sprite & saw a can in my fridge, I highly recommend using mountain dew in place of sprite as a mixer
I love Mountain Dew! I have been drinking if from the mid 1970s. I drink about 7 a day. As much as I spent on Mountain Dew, I could have own the company.
I'd like a video providing more on an analysis of Mountain Dew Voltage. As a fan of the flavor, I've noticed in recent years that not only have less stores seemigly had less bottles and 12 pack cans instock, but the large 2 lieter bottles they once had have dissapeared entierly for some reason. This deserves some looking into, in my opinion.
Great video on the History of Mountain Dew. I don't drink it much now but i loved it as a teen. It was the perfect drink for long gaming sessions. Especially playing CoD with friends. :)
When I was a kid in the '70's there was also another drink called "White Lighting". I liked Mt. Dew but liked White Lightning better, but it was harder to find.
You know what I would love to see a story on…Cactus Cooler. It’s a drink my husband and I grew up with, but we can’t get it outside of Southern California…would LOVE to know the history behind this soda!!
Everybody I know from California (3 people lol I live on the other side of the country) has raved about that stuff. I’m halfway tempted to find a way to smuggle some out to here & test the hype
i was born in '80, and i'm not ashamed to say i LOVE Mtn Dew and i always have. my dad was a strict Dr. Pepper guy...he wouldn't touch any other soda, not even Pepsi or Coke. he was so stoked watching Forrest Gump the first time, i'm not even kidding. anyway, we weren't supposed to drink soda when we were kids. dad's Dr. Pepper was hands-off, but the prob was, he'd buy 3-4 cases at a time and keep it in the big old garage fridge, so who'd notice a couple cans missing? nobody. we were very careful to take the cans with us or bury them in the trash. the first time i tasted Mtn Dew, i was probably 8 years old...and from the first sip, i was hooked. absolutely, undoubtedly hooked. it was a hot summer day, we were out riding bikes, and we went to the drugstore for a drink...Mello Yello or Mtn Dew? i picked Dew. the green can and white label looked weirdly attractive. i crushed that first can in like 6 huge chugs. burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpppp. my god, that was the most delicious thing i'd ever drank. well, now i'm almost 44 and i drink 1-2 Dews every single day. i even have it with breakfast most of the time. i'm never, ever giving up Dew. no way, no how. i'm not overweight or diabetic, probably because i've never been that big of an eater. but it's true that i've spent about $30,000 in dental bills over the years, which isn't Dew's fault, but my own. i'm sure it didn't help, but getting into bad habits in college (partying all weekend and even weeknights pretty often) hurt my dental health, and i had to get it fixed and get back into better habits. so that's my story of a love affair with Dew. i still think they should bring back the full name Mountain Dew (instead of Mtn) and the classic white and green can.
I remember the old Mountain Dew jingle: ‘Drink Mountain Dew and you’ll discover, what’s inside quenches like no other, blend of citrus just for you, so smooth it goes down easy too’
I wasnt crazy about Mt Dew in the 70', 80's, it was a taste thing but after 90's and early 2000's something changed for me ... today its on top 3 of my list
Thanks for the video I'm gonna get some Mountain Dew right now. I still have one of the tickle your inner's cups from the 1970s practically an antique by now. As far as using Mountain Dew as a mixer for alcohol it goes excellent with Absente.
I've been a "Do the Dew" guy since the 70's, and I love the traditional flavor, regardless of the changes made over the years. But my favorite #2 Mountain Dew is Pitch Black! Yahoo! Mountain Dew! 🤓👍💯
I remember when I was around 16 or 17 when Mt dew had some contest. I never won anything other than a free dew. I paid for one dew that summer n never had to Pay for another cuz I kept getting a free one on underside of the caps.
At the 2 min. mark I recognized that voice…Howard Morris, AKA Ernest T Bass. He voiced many commercials, and cartoon characters. He was an underrated actor.
This was my friend’s favorite soda. We’d have sleepovers at his house and stay up all night watching movies. I don’t drink soda nor do I consume caffeine anymore but it’s fun to reminisce about my youth!
I started drinking Mountain Dew in the 1990s. I felt like the only one around Los Angeles, where I grew up. When I joined the Army in 2002 I was amazed to see that Army guys loved it (the Army is disproportionately Southerners). Vending machines in any base always had it (because the vendors were smart). I mean, Army guys didn't guzzle it, but it was just there and I didn't feel like an oddball by loving it. I left the Army after 12 years. I've cut down on it since, as I'm not young and naturally skinny anymore. But anyway, all along I remember the commercials showing people doing extreme sports or being outdoorsy, and implying they drink Mountain Dew, and I never understood it. No one I knew who was into that stuff drank Mountain Dew. The civilians I knew who did drink it were fat and sedentary. The ads didn't influence me at all; it was the sweet flavor and caffeine. But somehow the campaign must have worked, as they did it for so long. Did fatties drink Mountain Dew thinking this associated them with fit people? Or did these ads really influence the subculture of fit people and get them to drink 170 calories in 12 ounces? Please respond in the replies with your thoughts.
I don’t thinks it was the ads. Mountain Dew just has more sugar making it more appealing to the overweight. It could also be relative to your experience, the only people I knew to drink lots of Mountain Dew was a sprinter at my high school and my mom who’s a little asian woman.
It's like the smoking ads in the 80s where they showed people being rich, popular, good looking, active In sports,etc... sailing was one of the brands big commercials. I don't think people who smoke are anything like the people in the ads, but they did sell a lot of cigarettes. That's why you won't find smoking or other tabacco ads anymore. It's unhealthy...lol😂 it's for your own good the government will let you slam down mt. dew while doing extreme sports. But heaven forbid you smoke.
I like the old Willie the hillbilly ads. First time I heard of Mountain Dew was 1963 when I was ten years old. They had Willie shout out "Yahoo for Mountain Dew!!" In radio commercials. Made me want to try it.
I was hoping Weird History Food would talk about the return of Willy The Hillbilly and the old Mountain Dew formula being marketed as “Throw Back”. Although it’s not a permanently marketed Mountain Dew drink, I buy it when available. Mountain Dew’s competitor has always been Mello Yello, and 7-Up’s is Sprite. My favorite Mountain Dew is Code Red. While most of my military peers were drinking coffee in the morning, I drunk Mountain Dew. Like with most goodies when you approach middle age, I had to cut back on the drink because it was causing fast weight gain. I will drink it once in a while; especially while driving on long road trips.
There’s no soda better than the original Mtn. Dew in glass bottles. Code Red is good but for some reason always gave me indigestion. Pitch Black was my #2 favorite Mtn. Dew, with the original being #1 of course.
It wasn’t mentioned here, but for a limited time they actually rereleased original mountain dew in the 2010s using cane sugar! I don’t know which of the historic recipes they used exactly but it featured the old hillbilly mascot and came in cans and glass bottles!
I stopped drinking soda about 30 yrs ago, but once in a while I'd have a Johnnie Walker Red with Ginger ale up to around 2007. 2 months ago I decided I needed a stimulant, beside coffee as it makes me really jittery and makes me itch. So I tried Mountain Dew Zero, and I drink a half a bottle a day since.
Being born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee Mountain Dew has a huge culture significance here! The local history museum even had an entire Exhibit room dedicated to Mountain Dew!
I remember the old moonshiner, kicked back on his front porch, with his crossed legs perched on the porch rail - rifle sighted between his toes, yelling "Yahoo, Mountain Dew ! " ... :) The local competition in our area at the time was Kickapoo Joy Juice... :)
Does anyone remember when Mountain Dew did a survey amongst the public asking for a name for their apple flavor? The winning flavor name (before the survey was quickly taken down and limited to a select few chosen names) was "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong Mountain Dew" quickly followed in second place by "Gushing Granny Mountain Dew".... Very True Stories!
I know I'm in a minority here, but for me Mountain Dew has always existed in a valley between Sun Drop, which I'd choose as a pick-me-up with its far higher caffeine content, or Mello Yello, of which I prefer the taste. That said, some of the best moonshine I've ever had came from Martinsville, Virginia and was awesome paired with Mountain Dew as a mixer or chaser. It really gave you that "white lightnin'" feeling, like a bolt of electricity straight down your spine. The only alcohol to ever affect me that way.
I wish Sweet Lightening was not KFC only. Maybe they will release it like Baja Blast. I also like Live Wire and one of the blue ones. Maui Burst is pretty good too.
This was informative and entertaining. The only improvement I would suggest is mentioning Jolt Cola in the high caffeine section. Also, my favorite Mt. Dew flavor was White Out (RIP).
Didn’t realize that the new hard mtn dew was sort of the original vision of the brand, maybe. It would be cool if they released something to mix with bourbon, maybe do a collaboration
The video says it's Dollar General that carries Sweet Lightning, but that's obviously a mistake. DG has Maui Burst, a pineapple flavor that was a summer exclusive the year before COVID.
I’m the guy on the right in the can of meat 2 video! I can’t believe this. My friend who’s on the left just found this 0:04. We don’t mind y’all used our clip! Cheers
They used to make a Caffeine Free Mt. Dew (regular & diet both). I always preferred that. When I moved, it wasn't available where I was living, so I'd bring a case or two back with me every time I went back home. Now, it's been discontinued entirely. Bring back Caffeine Free Mt. Dew!
@@ingridfong-daley5899 There are lots of ways to get caffeine if one wants it. There's only 1 thing that tastes like Mt. Dew. So, for me, the intent IS the taste. And since it's so wildly over-caffeinated even compared with other caffeinated drinks, I almost never end up drinking my favorite soft drink. They made a huge mistake in discontinuing that version. I'd like to drink my favorite soft drink without having it make me ill. And since they don't give me that option, I'll choose anything else 999 times out of 1000. It tastes great, but it's just not worth what it does to me.
It's not a drink i like but my memory is of high school/college friends simply 'tolerating' the taste just to down that amount of caffeine. I guess that was the days before energy drinks so people have plenty hi-octane options now. I just don't recall people liking the flavour so much as enduring it. :)@@VJacquette

White out
I was a little kid in the '60's.
Jolt Cola would be good to learn more about
It was nasty. Had so much sugar that it made your teeth feel fuzzy.
I still miss the blue jolt, tasted like carbonated melted blue popsicles.
All the sugar, Twice the caffeine. What more do you need to know?
I always wanted diet jolt
I loved Jolt. Every other cola drink was and still is garbage to me.
I’m just old school and a hillbilly to my favorite is ole Willie thanks for this video. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!! ✌🏻from Ga.
Hey Weird History! Remember when they used to include toys/prizes in cereal boxes?! I think a video you guys could do an awesome job with is "Top X Prizes That Were Found in Cereal Boxes". It would hit that nostalgic nerve for people too! Love your work guys!
I second that.
I would like and subscribe!
That is a great suggestion, nice.
Cereal had a lot of mascots that just disappeared too.
My best "prize" was a TMNT cereal bowl, it was so big they had to attach it to the outside of the box.
Every shop I've ever worked has Mt. Dew, sometimes two slots, even in coke machines. Thank your tech.
In India,.Dew's tagline is "Darr k aage jeet hai" which means Beyond Fear lies Victory and its a popular everyday phrase to use.
Most of its ads always includes fun and cool stunts.
That line sounds metal af

"Tickle yer innards" is the best tagline ever!
That special moment in the WFH video where the commercials catch up with your childhood.
Those 80s commercials were iconic.
I rememeber back in the middle 60s, the bottle had a Hillbilly carrying a rifle and running to an out house.

If I ran out of a product, as a store manager, every week I would think my vendor was not very good at their job.
Forgot about Code Red. Loved that in high school. Nostalgia has me wanting one, hope they still make it
I have been drinking Mountain Dew since the late 60's. I wish Super Nova was still around. Code Red Mountain Dew is my favorite.
I was hoping MountainDew AMP was gonna get mentioned as one of its side projects. Good video can’t believe I use to drink so much Dew.
I was waiting for that too. Red Amp got me through my Senior year in high school haha

Cricle K has an exclusive flavor called Purple Thunder that tastes identical to the old Pepsi Blue, it's SO dang good!! 🤤
I really like the exclusive one that Casey's has too, Overdrive
Racetrack used to have a mango energy drink in the fountain and it was awesome. I'd get the biggest possible one and it would last all night.

I still regularly see Mountain Dew Energy in stock locally so I think many are unaware of that
I remember Mountain Dew being referred to as "Tweaker's Choice" back in the early 2000s. Has anyone else heard of this reference?🤔
Makes sense.. the Mountain Dew bottles were used in clandestine labs as a vessel.

JOSTA! Such a unique flavor. It was gross, and delicious. Couldn't get enough of it.
i was born in '80, and i'm not ashamed to say i LOVE Mtn Dew and i always have. my dad was a strict Dr.
I remember the old Mountain Dew jingle:
‘Drink Mountain Dew and you’ll discover, what’s inside quenches like no other, blend of citrus just for you, so smooth it goes down easy too’
BAha blast is 👍

Shit slaps.

It's like the smoking ads in the 80s where they showed people being rich, popular, good looking, active In sports,etc... sailing was one of the brands big commercials.

IDK sounds kind of like "non-alcohollic Jack Daniels"... you COULD do it but it seems to defeat the fundamental intent of the beverage itself.
