Food is one of those things that immediately sets one country apart from another, and edible items or practices taken for granted in one country may in fact be banned somewhere else. For example, people eat many strange - and sometimes horrifying - foods in the US, some of which would raise eyebrows in almost any other nation.

Yeah I went to croatia and their sea food is awesome but what really got me was their chicken. I swear each time I go overseas I come back to the states thinking how awesome they have it and how highly processed inexible most food is in the u.s. and don't get me started on companies constantly changing names on ingredients labels.

As someone working in the Food Industry in Germany, some of that stuff only sounds special + or is just needed for the technical process to produce it in large quantities and near same products.
Like Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C, for natural preservative, oxidation protection and because vitamin C is often added during the manufacturing process when products are heated, as vitamin C begins to be destroyed in certain quantities from 40°, at most temperatures above 100° considerable parts are destroyed.)
L-cysteine is used in the form of the hydrochloride as a flour treatment agent and baking agent in the production of baked goods. It softens the gluten by depolymerizing the molecules of the gluten fraction through thiol-disulfide exchange with the intermolecular disulfide bonds (i.e. breaking the bonds that hold the long chain molecules together).[21] As a result, the dough becomes more elastic and develops faster. With high-gluten flour, a higher baked volume can be achieved because the leavening gas (such as the carbon dioxide formed by the yeast) can loosen the dough more easily.[26] Cysteine hydrochloride can also be added in the production of pasta to speed up dough production (an addition of 0.01% shortens the mixing or kneading time by 15-20%). It inhibits the formation of melanoidins during non-enzymatic browning and thus counteracts discoloration.[26] In addition to these applications, cysteine, like other amino acids, acts as a flavouring agent, flavour enhancer and nutrient.[27]
L-cysteine hydrochloride or hydrochloride monohydrate is approved under European food law as an additive without maximum quantity restriction (quantum satis) under the number E 920.[28][29] In principle, it is subject to declaration, but not if it is no longer technologically effective in the labeled product in accordance with Article 20 of the Food Information Regulation and Section 9 (8) No. 1 of the Additive Approval Regulation. According to the Baking Ingredients Institute (an institution of the Baking Ingredients Association), the technological effectiveness of cysteine used as a flour treatment agent (i.e. already added to the flour before leavening) does not extend to the finished baked goods, but to the dough piece if it is offered as a semi-finished product, for example.[30] It therefore does not need to be labelled in finished baked goods. The Federation of German Consumer Organizations does not share this legal opinion
Diacetyl tartaric acid DATEM (E472e in EU) is a emulsifier primarily used in baking to strengthen the gluten network in dough. It is added to crusty breads, such as rye, to impart a springy, chewy texture
To name some, but the list for our Bread is still alot of shorter and more basic natural ingredients used.
Best is still to make your on Bread, its easy, cost not much and you have alot alot of different ones to try, alone germany has over 3000 food register.
But canned food, especially canned fruit/vegetables, is often even better than normal frozen food and comes close to fresh, the vitamins and minerals are still present to a very large extent.

I'm from Serbia and I was very shocked when I realized that most americans rarely really cook. what I mean by "really cook" is what they call "from scratch". they make brownies out of a box, everything is either frozen or pre-made. we just don't do that here and we only have a few frozen or pre-made options
Now you know why we're all so fat here.
Really it's because of the working week. I know so many people that work 10 hours a day 6 days a week and come home exhausted and the last thing they want to do is spend another hour or 2 throwing together a homemade dish. Doesn't help that homemade dishes are often meant for like 10 people so you either do some math and work it out for however many are eating it or you eat it for the next 3 days straight.
Of course there are always exceptions. I hear of stay at home parents that won't lift even lift a finger.
Croatian here - same story, we were all raised on real cooked homemade food - made from real actual ingredients. And as to the working week, our grandmas and moms used to cook a week's worth of food in a single day very often so as to save time during the week. (and for a very specific reason those meals tasted better with each passing day)

But then I also cook large portions and either freeze some for days I am working a late shift or take a portion with me to the office to reheat at lunch time.
In my opinion cooking from scratch should be possible for most people, there are many easy fast recipes for workdays. Today we had boiled potatoes, green beans and a pork cutlet. Peel potatoes, put them on the stove, prepare/wash green beans and add them to the pot of now boiling potatoes. Put a pan on, fry cutlets. In 25 minutes total time a meal is ready.

I am an American now living in Italy, and one of the things I first noticed at the local butcher, was chickens actually look like……well……chickens.

What I find seriously disturbing as an American, is that our government not only allows citizens to be poisoned through our food, medications and water, but that there are federal agencies who are tasked with preventing small farmers from selling certain foods like raw or naturally processed milk and dairy products, organically grown meat, fruits and vegetables etc, to people who want to buy organic food, instead of the toxic and poisoned foods that are available in stores.. the USDA and FDA have literally managed to destroy so many different farmer's businesses and farms, including some Amish ones, and have even had law enforcement officers dump out several gallons of raw milk before the farmer even had the chance to argue his case in court.. their excuse for not wanting citizens to drink raw milk: "IT COULD CAUSE PEOPLE TO GET SICK!"

USDA and FDA are completely hypocritical. Europe bans way more unnecessary harmful chemicals than US does. It's upsetting and feel these USDA/FDA people who Refuse to ban these Unnecessary Harmful Chemicals should be all that they consume. I grew up in the entire 80's and do remember food already being organic and never saw/heard the word organic until somewhere 2000's.

to be fair, russia does have a problem with obesity as well, like any other country in the world. however, the extra kilos come from fatty, fried foods that are a staple in our cuisine, like pan-fried potatoes or savory pasties with meat or cabbage that are fried in the pan. so it’s not due to the excessive consumption of processed food. you can just as easily gain weight by eating home-made food. also, most of the salads here have mayonnaise-based dressing which is obviously a contributing factor as well.

Mountain dew also contains brominated vegetable oil. This not legal in most countries. More disturbing is that Pepsi was able to convince the FDA to include it under natural flavoring a couple years ago so it is no longer listed on the ingredient list. Surprised you missed that when researching the topic.

There's only a warning about it because some people have a rare birth defect that prevents them from clearing any excess amount they ingest from the body and the result can be life threatening. It's perfectly fine for everyone else. That's why the standard warning begins with "Attention phenylketonurics…" (i.e. people with the defect, phenylketonuria).

After making my own bread for about three months, a friend gave me a loaf of what was my favorite bread. I made some of the best tuna salad that I've ever made to celebrate. I smeared it in the bread and took a slow and deliberate bite... and almost gaged!
In just those few short months, I had gotten used to bread without all the extra "ingredients" that are in manufactured bread. Tasting it again, I really noticed the funky taste that I had once adored.
On the upside, I no longer think about buying bread "just for old time's sake".
The bread I bake may not be as soft and light as manufactured bread; but I can spread (homemade) jelly on it without tearing it to pieces.
I am gluten intolerant. Twenty years now gluten free.
Live in Canada so some things allowed in bread in the states banned here. But not enough.
We went away for 3 weeks to visit the kids, and I forgot to put my husband's bread in the freezer. Imagine my surprise when we return and I could not see a trace of mold. It had been in the bread box. It should have been a slimy mess.
I was having company for Easter and decided to buy rolls. Everyone loved them. Asked how I found them since I never eat bread.
It was easy. Every where I went the rolls and bread smelt moldy. Looked fine. And that was just picking them up. No where near my nose. But strong smell. I hate walking threw the bread sections in stores because of it.
When I finally found a store with sourdough rolls. Picked them up. Smelt like homemade bread. No moldy smell. The list of ingredients were normal homemade bread ingredients.
I am convinced the strange ingredients stop you from seeing the mold which is actually there.
The tuna is full of MERCURY now. It is not edible.
Try visiting germany and getting some german bread, outs got onto the list of world cultural heritage
Fresh bread would be what I'd miss most if I moved to the US. Sadly small bakeries are also disappearing slowly in Germany and being replaced by bakery chains, but those companies are still kind of regional and still doing it the old way, without any extra flavoring stuff or anything. I was really shocked when I once saw a video where an American in Germany was fascinated about the fact that you can get fresh bread everywhere. I just thought that was normal.

It's so hard to even find any kind of processed or premade food in the US that isn't full of a long list of mysterious chemicals or the lovely corn syrup. It would be nice if there were a few more healthy items available to be purchased.
It's really not that different here in Europe/Germany. Well, maybe it is, I'm certain our bread is a lot better, but there's still a lot of heavily processed crap aviable.
Only way out is to get used to "bland", plant based foods and cooking with raw ingredients.
@@Sundara229 plant bases food is extremely highly processed, I cannot stress enough to stay away from them until they research more efficient technologies, also it is not very sustainable. Just buy organic food from local markets and farmers.
@@Sundara229 I think that in general Europeans cook things from the scratch than Americana. In Finland we even lern at school basic cooking skills and make food and bake ourself.
Of course at younger age as i was living single (with my cat) i did consume more of processed foods becouse it was so easy to throw something into the microwave owen and let it heat 1-2 minutes and eat. But at least our products are still healthier than many Americans.

When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure I had to start reading food labels. American made food products have a shocking level of sodium compared to products from other places.
It's ridiculous. Low sugar, no sugar, no high fructose corn syrup, low fat, no fat, and so on. Yet the list of low and no sodium products is very short, and just like removing sugar, they often replace it with things that are just as bad or worse. My frozen dinner doesn't need 1/2 my daily sodium intake, because, it's frozen. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ It's only good for a year or so anyway before freezer burn, tons of sodium or not. Just the stupidest 💩 ever. 😒

Having low sodium will actually exacerbate high blood pressure. You should make sure you have plenty of electrolytes. In fact many people don't get nearly enough and have gotten scared of salt due to out of date research.

@@section8usmc53 not really. Our bodies are incredibly good and processing sodium. You'll just excrete the excess sodium in urine. The problem is where you don't have enough sodium to regulate normal bodily functions. Our diets used to have WAY more salt than we now do due to no refrigeration. Yet there were no reports of hypertension or other issues with kidney function. Our bodies are used to excess sodium, not used to not getting enough. You can have over 6 times the amount of salt the USDA recommends and it poses much less of a health risk than actually listening to their outdated guidelines. I say look into it more and you'll find that the little war on salt is a pathetic argument that's killed thousands.

The FDA is our worst enemy. People should use this list for what not to eat. We have a local Amish bakery and I only buy bread from them. If I leave their bread out for a day or two it starts turning green while the store one's might lay out a year. I buy three loaves at a time, two in the freezer and one in the refrig.
I make my own bread and it lasts a good week and a half. I’m sorta shock your Amish bread goes bad that fast lol

On my first visit to USA I bought a pack of "whole grain" toast bread from 7/11 store. When I opened it one slice dropped out of the bag, hit the table and jumped off like a ping pong ball right onto the floor. I pressed the other slice with my fingers and it acted like when you press a sponge. And it was as sweet as a cake. The amount of sugar in it has to be through the roof. I just threw it into the trash can.

It's so frustratingly difficult to eat healthy in the USA! It's like you need a degree in chemistry and a ton of free time and to never have any food cravings ever. And then on top of that, when we get health problems from our low quality foods, it's hard to get health insurance and medical bills are criminally expensive! And people blame us when we get sick from our poor diets and sedentary life styles, but most of us dont have better options. Healthy food is very expensive and/or requires a lot of prep time that many people dont have because they have to work too many hours. Getting excercize when you work way too many hours at a job where you have to sit down all day is not always possible.
We need to make it easier for americans to get healthier food, enough free time to excercize, and medicine that doesnt bankrupt us.

It's actually not that hard, as a Brazillian living in the USA, all you need some free time once in a day and you can cook food for the next 5 to 6 days without even that much work at all.
I'll share the most common brazillian everyday meal with you:
Black beans with rice:
Black beans, get around 300g of black beans and put it on an big pan with water, add a smashed garlic teeth and 2 bay leafs, a little bit of salt and let it cook for about an hour and half, take a look at it every 30 min to se if it needs some more water and that's it, once the beans are soft its done. you can make with with sausage slices to give it little bit of a "jeijoada taste" but it'll go bad faster ( 4 days).
just add rice (you know how to make rice right?)
You can eat it combined with a salad, or a fried egg or french fries, a beef... it's on you.
Once you are done eating you can just put it on a refrigerator for the next days, and reheat it any time you want.

A lot of us just aren't educated on what's actually healthy and we try to be healthy but fail because what we think is healthy isnt. We also need way more health education other than "eat an apple and run" advice they give us in HS health class. I was overweight my entire life and was a very obese child and now as a 30 year old I'm still about 15 lbs overweight but feel a shit ton better than I ever have. It's still hard to eat healthy often and the food addiction is definitely still there its just easier to manage and I exercise more to burn the calories but I know I still eat like crap compared to most healthy foreigners. It's easy for them to judge until most of them have lived here and learned the struggle.
Also to the guy above eating black beans and rice every day sounds like shit. Cool if you wanna eat like that but some of us need a variety.

Not only that, Nestle makes a diet shake (UltraFast 900) that is essentially a yoyo diet program/scheme. It's a doctor assisted weight loss program that uses these diet shakes to trick you into seeing results. In 5 months I would lose 40-50 lbs, and then over the course of a year all that weight would come back on. They prescribe the type of food that you eat after the diet shake portion of the diet. Inevitably, the weight always comes back on. I tried it about 6 times for over 9 years, and each time the weight came back on. One year, I was even rushed to the hospital with a case of a blocked bowel, or impacted feces. Very painful. I still wonder, did these Nestle UltraFast shakes play a role in this painful bodily breakdown of mine.

American bread is genuinely weird though. We drove to some sort of bread store (I don't think it was an actual bakery? They only sold bread, but it was all pre-packaged stuff) because my hosts didn't eat bread and I could feel my German metabolism shutting down from bread withdrawal. The store sold 50 slightly different shades of the same squishy pre-sliced rectangular loaf. All the ones I tried tasted like cake. Even the pumpernickel was just sweet squishy cake dyed dark brown.
Even scarier. I once lived in an rv. It was impounded once for 90 days, just after I went shopping. When I got my rig back more than 3 months later, the Wonder bread was fine. Just as fresh as brand new. Scary.

America is one of the very few nations that uses fluoride too. It's good to travel outside the United States, you see a uniformity in the world as far as food and products goes. You realize America is in its own little bubble.
Fluoride is also used in cleaning solutions for machines that separate meat. Especially for poultry. Soak in salted water for 30 minutes in iodized salt prior to cooking.

Im from the UK and visited the USA for 2 weeks. For about 7 of those days, I was pissing out of my arse, I couldn't shift my headache & my joints were so stiff. 2 days after getting back home, all those problems just disappeared. I'm from Eastern Europe, never been to the US, but when I talked to my American friends about food related stuff, they mentioned having constant heartburns, one of them doesn't eat anything after 6pm so he could sleep normally, without any discomfort, and I was slightly surprised, since heartburns are very rare issue for me. 2 days later I've decided to get some nachos with a nacho sauce (El Nacho Grande, made in Ohio) and it was the only American made product which I ate in months, and guess what, about 2 hours later I started having severe heartburn, it was so bad that I had to go to the nearest pharmacy to get some heartburn pills. And it is not because I can't handle spicy food or anything like that, like I've tried super spicy Korean noodles and ate them with some spicy Chinese chips(crisps) and everything was fine afterwards. So now I don't trust American made products lol

My paternal grandfather would go through several cases of 1 L bottles of Mexican Coca-Cola per week. Grandma swore up and down that it still contained traces of nose candy. He was never out of shape, either. He weighed 160 pounds soaking wet and never developed a paunchy belly like lots of lean people in older age. could be placebo, but it's not entirely implausible. coca cola nowadays is made with some small amount of coca leaves that had their cocaine content previously extracted. it's somewhat plausible that coke made in mexico or for mexico in a similarly badly regulated market may be made with coca leaves that are not cleansed of cocaine as thoroughly. I think if you could arrange the transport and not get caught, just using unextracted coca leaves would be cheapest - I don't think that there is much of a legal market for cocaine nowadays (dentists used to use it as a local anaesthetic, but it was widely replaced with less regulated alternatives), so a legal cocaine extraction operation probably would not be able to make much money from the cocaine (destroying all or most of it), and would then need to sell the extracted leaves more expensively than they bought them.

It's puzzling that there was no mentioned of brominated vegetable oil (aka, BVO) in connection to Mountain Dew. It's likely quite a bit more toxic than the other ingredients that were brought to out attention here. I seem to remember that the producer had promised long ago to remove the ingredient, but it's still listed on the label.

Titanium dioxide is in a LOT of things! I remember back in the early '90s when I was in college, I got into cake decorating. I had a bottle of Wilton's titanium dioxide, used to make white icing really white and to make other colors in icing pop. Dad was shocked and told me how it's in house paint and soap and makeup. It's what provides "coverage" in makeup, as I understand it. I don't know if those bottles of titanium dioxide are still around or still used that way, but I'm pretty sure it's in quite a lot of confections, at least in the US.
It's also used in A LOT of different tooth pastes as it makes the paste extremly white. I don't understand when science discorvers that something is extremly toxic that it's still allowed to use in products. It's still being used in Europe too 😅

I bake bread often at home and it's good for 3-5 days, a week at the absolute most. We forgot a loaf of grocery store sliced "bread" in the back of the cabinet for almost two months, well past its sell-by date. It was not only not moldy, it was still soft. I'm wary of the stuff now.

they add both preservatives and in fact also stuff to make it soft. here in germany, bagged toast tends to last 10-15 days, I think. markedly longer than bakery or homemade bread, but certainly not 2 months.

Seeing these things here as a German, now living in Austria... it's interesting. Most of the here shown things like Skittles, are sold over here too. Skittles are made here with "natural coloring" extracted from beetroot or carrots for example. Mountain Dew is a thing I miss in Austria sometimes, that's why I buy it in Germany just across the border. In East Germany (former GDR) there is a drink called "Vita Cola" - it's a mix of Cola and lemon (juice) and it's a great taste. Pepsi tried copying it but their taste isn't as good.

Marabou did not move from Norway to Sweden, but was a subsidiary of Norwegian Freia set up in Sweden. They still have a lot of similar products, like M. M was developed and first sold in Norway, not Sweden. Both companies are now sadly owned by Mondelez.
A lot of these foods have never been imported in Italy, but some are legal here - like Special K and M&Ms. By the way, I didn't expect Special K to be this bad. It was by far my favourite breakfast cereal in my teens!😭

1:24 According to Wikipedia, not every country in Europe has banned the titanium dioxide. UK, for example, did not follow EU and still allows it in the food. Canada followed UK, also reviewed the ban but continue to allow this in their food.
There are also food additives that are allowed in most European and Asian countries but are banned here in the US, for example, cyclamate, an artificial sweetener. Most other countries think it's safe, FDA thinks not so it's illegal here :)
11:06 Raw meat. We have similar raw meat in Germany called Hackepeter or Mett. Wonder why so many people freak out about illnesses or trichinosis. In Germany consumable raw meat has to be tested before and is only allowed to be prepared on sales day and it has to be disposed at the same day.The US covers up bad production that is all what happens, like with Salmonella. Instead of changing regulation in production the industry blames the customer.

Coca Cola is not made with sugar anymore (like most other sodas) but has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it instead. Also, most chewing gums are sweetened with aspartame now, no sugar in them. I cut out sodas in the early 1980's and don't miss them one bit, and I don't consume any of the products mentioned in this video. I buy all of my meats and eggs from a local farm, only eat organic produce and make my own bread. I can't stand to eat out anymore because I know the food is garbage, and as far as Fast Food restaurants, I have no desire to eat at any of them. People in the USA are so unhealthy and it is their diet that is doing it to them.
We actually do sell Skittles in Norway, but they were banned for many years indeed. Mountain Dew is also sold but as mentioned the finished product is VERY different from the one sold in the states.

When I worked for FDA and conducted foreign food inspections, a majority of the firms I inspected were put on import alert for failure to meet regulations required to manufacture safe canned foods (the rocket science of foods), including firms in France, Scotland, and Japan.
The US does have high standards regarding foods being imported.

But as regulations sometimes have to go through legislative approval, regulations may not be approved as quickly or easily as they should. Senator Hatch for years prevented FDA from establishing regulations on dietary supplements because he was part-owner in at least 3 large companies. Unlike the executive branch employees, there is no recusal for conflict of interest for legislators. They are able to vote on bills of which they have a personal interest in.
Yeah, I was gonna say, there are American foods that are banned elsewhere but the same applies for foods coming in. The heavy processing that foods receive in the modern age isn't one sided, and it *can* have adverse affects. It's a matter of trade-offs and making decisions that might have some downsides, but you have to weigh them against the good side.
That said, I've never seen a good side to the entire sugar industry so I gave up candy and sodas aaaaaagggeees ago. My daughter's never had that garbage either.

I knew about a lot of the artificial colorings being banned, but I had no idea that steak tartar was legal in the USA! I always thought it was illegal to serve raw land animals here.
TBH in Europe there are places where people eat raw meat as well. In Poland we love beef tartar with a raw egg on top.
The case in the video is just Canadian government going full-communism during pandemic and banning basically everything (no doubt they would ban all meat consumption for the lower caste people in near future).
This is making a lot of sense. I have been dealing with all types of painful and annoying symptoms. I remember before the symptoms, I was eating a ton of m&ms. M&Ms have lots of food colorings like Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, etc. I was also eating Cap’n Crunch, these also contain Yellow 5, Yellow 6, etc. I stopped eating M&Ms and noticed a lot of my symptoms went away but some were still there. I started eating Nacho Cheese Doritos and more symptoms started to come. Nacho Cheese Doritos also have Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, etc. I’ve been to different hospitals and several doctors and they all say my organs look fine, blood looks fine, and they see no underlying issues. Therefore, there is nothing they can do other than prescribe medications for every symptom. Makes no sense to me why a 20 yo fit male who doesn’t drink or do drugs would be having health issues this early in life. Starting today I am going to be cutting out all food coloring and see how this goes. Hopefully this will make all my pain and symptoms go away. 🙏🏽

We actually do have Skittles and Mountain Dew in Norway. Mountain Dew only come in 0,5 L bottles and Skittles normally in really small packages. Something we don't have in Norway is M&M's. Weird on what you guys say about M&Ms. Norwegians usually travel to Sweden for. Soft drinks, including Mountain Dew. Skittles (larger packs) and M&Ms.
I am Canadian and was a truck driver who has covered all but one State of all the States south of Canada, and some north of us also. I have eaten Little Debbie's food and found them too dry and bland. Vachon Products are much better-tasting
I was born in 82 & it seems like the food that we had in the 80s & 90s was WAY different than today….I think about how when u would buy a loaf of bread years back and it would mold after a week or 2 but, nowadays it seems like bread takes months to start molding….that’s just one example.
