The johnson bar with stephenson valve gear can be pretty dangerous when you’re not careful, especially trying to reduce full cutoff without reducing your throttle first. Throughout the mid to late 1800s, there’s been stories of engineers being injured from the johnson bar snapping in the reverse position when trying to reduce cutoff while leaving the throttle wide open, and on one occasion, it killed an engineer by snapping in reverse into his gut, rupturing some internal organs.
for your British fun fact today, I present you with the ES&D-esque maneuvers of the LMS when they broke the world speed record. The plain and simple truth of it is that they decided to not use any brakes until the had the record, and by the time they hit the target speed, they were nearly at the crossovers and complex track of the station, so they just applied full automatic, and still took the crossover at _Highball speed_! While nothing went into the dirt, "most of the crockery in the dining car was smashed, much to the consternation of the assembled guests", so they absolutely werent going "gently"! 39:10 On the BNSF Dash 9's and AC4400CW's, the usually had the green light and extra markings on the site glasses to show the various water levels. Usually, engine on full/low, engine off full/low plus GLED(?) on. I know they were marked differently in the early 2000's. I believe the way the system worked in the water was held in the reservoir until the temperature reached a certain point then it would go up to the radiators. I do know if it failed and water was constantly going through the radiators and you topped them off, they would shoot a geyser out the top or side.
How I have my railway set up is each engine’s assigned to a crew to help me remember the role - there’s a road freight engine, two passenger engines, three dedicated shunters for dillsboro/sylva, whittier, and bryson, and dedicated logging engines for whittier and bryson
For repair boxcars, you’ll need 5 50ft steel boxcars. 2 for Bryson, 1 for Whittier, and 2 for Dills. While Whittier shouldn’t need a replenishment once delivered, Dills will require one replenishment and Bryson two. However, considering how broken most of your equipment is, I am going to say you’re going to need at least 3 replenishments for Dills and 5 for Bryson. Also, you may also want a total of five 3 bay hoppers as well (same assigning as the boxcars) for coal replenishing.
