    A few years ago we vacationed in Florida. We went to a water park where we were able to interact in the water with dolphins and rays. We were told to ditch our sunscreen and only use theirs which was zinc I'm sure because everyone had pasty faces. Protection for their dolphins etc. I get it and totally agree.

    I really wish you guys had access to other chemical filters. At least now FDA should get proactive in allowing newer filters which are not harmful for the environment.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 лет назад +14

      "not harmful to the reef" is not entirely accurate...a better way to view them as "innocent until proven guilty"....other chemical filters have not been examined or examined as much as those shown to be harmful to the reef....logic follows that non-nano zinc and titanium dioxide only sunscreens are the least harmful to the coral reefs

    I recently saw some info about our reef system, specifically The Great Barrier Reef, at our local museum in Pittsburgh. I wasn’t aware how bad it has been deteriorating. If I remember correctly, by 2030-2040, they’re estimating that it will be gone if there are no changes. It’s really sad.... I am so happy that Hawaii is making changes. Hopefully other high tourist areas will follow suit.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 лет назад +19

      while not great for their economy...in my opinion it would be better if tourism declined and people stayed home, as that is likely to have a great impact on the environment than banning two ingredients

      Try and look into the Cotz tinted natural ones, the pictures show they have a really nice *legitimately* darker tint to them. Certainly darker than the nudes common to tinted physical sunscreens. EltaMD has great filter formulations for sure. 👌 Hope that helps!

    I’ve been searching for a good reef safe sunscreen I can layer with makeup for YEARS. I live in Florida so I’m aware anything I put on my body has the potential of washing into the ocean. You are one of the only dermatologists that speaks about the reef damage associated with chemical sunscreens. Thank you!

    • @maeduss
      @maeduss 10 месяцев назад

      Hi! So are physical sunscreens less harmful to the environment? What about hybrid sunscreens? Bc the only sunscreens I can manage to wear on my face (that do not feel greasy or dry my normal skin, but it’s affordable) are hybrid (a mix of chemical and physical), but I wouldn’t mind to wear physical when going to the beach (just don’t know if it will be easy to find purely physical body sunscreens where I live)!!

    • @geekchic79
      @geekchic79 9 месяцев назад

      @@maeduss sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate are detrimental to coral health. Check your ingredients. I find it’s just easier to go with physical sunscreen with one or two active ingredients I’m already familiar with rather than looking up all the active ingredients in a hybrid or chemical product.

    I've always been an avid sunscreen user--even as a young 'un. My mom instilled this in me. Flash forward to adulthood when I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center and would walk around the hospital and clinic floors on my lunch break. All the different types of cancer clinics have their own waiting rooms. Most of them are relatively tiny. The Melanoma Center's waiting room is huge, and jam-packed. Made me thank my Mom for encouraging my sunscreen habits.

      I freaking hate the ghost look and looking to go low or zero waste means I pretty much have to tolerate the white cast and take up the tinted mineral powder for dusting it down to a socially acceptable appearance.
      Sigh, if only we could get white paste face like Elizabeth the Fist and Queen Mary pr a Geisha to be stylish again.

    I love this. I’m watching this at the very beginning of 2020, and as a fairly recent addition to your subscribers, I love you and the way you educate us as consumers. I do wish you would continue to bring up the coral reef issue, because so many people still know nothing about it, and don’t know which ingredients to avoid. I think that if you continue to be plain about this issue as well as our options in the sunscreen world, it will help people to continue to seek out sunscreens, while avoiding the ingredients known to cause issues for marine life.

    I am surprised she didn’t suggest just get a rash guard or light scuba suit for snorkeling and enjoying Hawaii without hassling with sunblock that offers minimal protection in the water anyway and needs to be reapplied constantly. Not to mention the reflection of the water which makes the sun rays even stronger.

    It is becoming increasingly difficult to find mineral sun cream here in the U.K. I was at boots today, looking for one and the only one they had was an SPF 20 and a 3 star rating. So I went to Superdrug and got my go to Solait superdrug brand which is a mineral sun cream and well under £5 for 400ml. Nothing against children’s sun cream of course! And the Solait sun cream for the face is wonderful (and goes well under makeup for those of us who wear it. Better than any primer I’ve ever used). Thanks for this well balanced and informative video.

    If I was forced to choose a zinc or titanium dioxide based sunscreen the reality is that I would "choose" to go without protection. On the off chance that I did apply a mineral sunscreen I definitely wouldn't reapply at the frequency I do now or as liberally. I know that's terrible but it's the truth, I can't use a product multiple times a day that makes me absolutely miserable.
    The white cast isn't even the problem for me, I have very dry skin and mineral sunscreens are a nightmare because of the dryness, pilling, white &/or waxy buildup (it especially collects in lines) and just a general discomfort. I know this sounds crazy but I feel like with mineral sunscreens the particles scratch up against my skin almost like sand particles which has a unpleasant and uneven exfoliating effect that exacerbates my dryness, makes me look strange and plays a huge part in them not being wearable for me.
    I'm American but I live in France so right now, thank God, I have access to better filter options that actually make me excited about sun protection. Until my move to France and subsequent discovery of the amazing chemical filter tinasorb I am ashamed to admit that I completely ignored sun protection for 28+ years. I really hope that the FDA approves these amazing filters soon so Americans can get their hands on these more comfortable, non-irritating filters. Who knew you could actually enjoy using sunscreen?!?!
    Dr. Dray I owe you a massive thank you, through your videos you've really helped me step up my sunscreen game. Having someone tell me how important sun protection is and always drilling in that I need to reapply has helped me completely change my sunscreen habits and has turned me into a model patient. I keep a few different bottles of sunscreen all around my house and in my bags so I come into contact with them and actually remember to use them which has really helped with the compliance problem. Now I actually enjoy applying sunscreen (Yes! It's possible) and I know I am doing something good for my health and look at it as a kind of pampering or self-care. I don't think I would have worked so hard to find a sunscreen that worked for my skin if it wasn't for your constant reinforcement and reminders, so thank you so much for helping to get my bum in gear and for being someone I know I can go to for reliable and accurate information on the subject.

    I appreciate this video so much. It’s something I have been thinking about a lot as someone who is very proactive about sun protection but has also started thinking a lot of living a more sustainable life. I’ve been using minimalism as a tool, slowly integrating vegan meal choices into my life while reducing animal product consumption, and buying things second hand when it makes sense. I have also started looking into vegan or “Cruelty-Free” products here and there but frankly, there is no perfect brand. They’re either owned by a parent company which isn’t cruelty free, they use stupid oils in their products, etc., as you know.
    Lowering your impact on the planet is a complicated process because even when the upfront cost seems to be the best option, you later find out in the long run it isn’t! For my body I am currently using a sunscreen with some of these suspect ingredients which may be damaging the reefs, but once it is used up I will be switching over to an all physical sunscreen. I was stressing myself out because as I use up old products I’ve been trying to replace them with vegan products and I knew I was going to have a hard time finding one that fit all these check lists while still being one that I will want to use! I was beating myself up about it really. Then there are the all-natural no sunscreen people who claim any sunscreen is bad for the environment. While I have never intended to quit wearing sunscreen, in some ways I could see their argument in that it’s one more product to package, produce, and buy. There is a seemingly somewhat high up front cost to sunscreen. Add in reports on damage to coral reefs and you can see why people would think advocating against sunscreen use is the best choice for the environment. What I have never thought about, and I am assuming people making these arguments haven’t either, is the cost not just socially but likely environmentally on treating cancer. When thinking long term from that perspective it is likely that the most environmentally sustainable thing someone can do is wear sunscreen to reduce their risk of cancer. Maybe if someone doesn’t want to wear sunscreen for themselves, perhaps they’ll do it for the planet?
    I apologize for the novel here. Obviously I have been thinking about this a lot lately as I’ve made other changes in my life, and this video has made me feel a lot better about finding a physical sunscreen for my body that I will use, and worrying maybe a little less about who the parent company is and if they meet every little criteria there is out there. Maybe I’ll find one that does fit the bill just perfect, maybe not, but to me the most important things at least when picking sunscreen is that it’s physical and that I’ll wear it. When weighing all the potential personal, societal, environmental costs, doing that seems like the best strategy at this point. Thank you! I

    I know this is an older video but I just found dr. dray and i live in Hawaii - I did have a gut reaction to buy up all my favorite sunscreen before the ban, but decided to try Anthelios Mineral instead and just force myself to get used to it before the ban. I'm amazed at how many people are NOT willing to give up the 'feelings' of straws (local restaurants tried to switch to paper from plastic straws and it failed) and sunscreen for the environment T.T

    Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your view, I really am more sensitive to the chemical sunscreens so I already use mineral sunscreens. When I'm finished with my current one, I'll choose one that is unscented and not nano sized as I believe the Australian Gold is. Maybe I'm mistaken. It doesn't leave much of a cast at all and my skin isn't sensitive to them. I'm glad you're addressing this and creating a movement to maintain sunscreen compliance!

    It certainly seems that sunscreen manufacturers have a long way to go in product development. People want mineral sunscreens but the white cast is horrible. I use the tinted Elta MD mineral however I can see that it wouldn't be suitable for anyone of color. Plus it may be pricey for some people. If you wear makeup how to effectively reapply during the day? The products like Neutrogena clear are not clear. I'm very fair and this still leaves a horrible white cast. I hope some of the manufacturers are watching your videos and reading the comments. People are not happy with the products available. It's easier for you because you don't wear makeup but realistically lots of working women wear makeup and enjoy doing so. The powder minerals look to be the answer for makeup wearers but again there are not many on the market and they are pricey.

    Thanks Dr. Dray for this video. I also hope that the ban will not cause people to be more adverse to sunscreen as it’s necessary for our health. Hawaii already has a high occurrence of cataract surgery because of the exposure of sun to the eyes, so sun protection for the body is absolutely key.

    The sunscreen issue is a tiny bit of the problem regarding the reefs. Just like with every beautiful part of the world people want to see it and enjoy what it offers. The downside of our ability to visit all these wonders is that human traffic actually causes far more destruction then said chemicals. One only has to see pictures of Mount Everest and the filthy trash left behind to observe this reality. The same goes with all the ancient ruins around the world crumbling under the pollution. I'm not saying don't go out and travel- check something off your " bucket list"- but the real truth, as you said Dr. Dray. is the amount of tourism at this time.

      I live in Hawaii and just decided to start wearing sunscreen regularly, if ever, thanks to Dr. Dray. I bought my Neutrogena sunscreen from Walmart and a local drugstore today. There are 2 large areas in Walmart to purchase sunscreen from which hasn't changed from before this ban. It's just that those sunscreen with those chemicals are not being sold anymore. There's lots of people who are sunscreen fanatics, and lots that never wear sunscreen, like anywhere else. This ban has not changed that.

    Today is Victoria Day which is a national holiday in Canada celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday!
    Yes, on our trip to Maui in February, there were signs everywhere along the coastline.The state government did provide information on optional sunscreen, that they deemed a reliable alternative to the sunscreen that they had band.
    Our oceans waters and aquatic life are in peril due to pollution's of all sorts, so I think it's a good idea to try to find alternatives for a sunscreen , to try to give everything a chance to a healthy life 😊

    Since the US/FDA has no definition of nano particles, companies are allowed to claim to produce non-nano sunscreens, while according EU or Australian regulations they would have to be considered nano sunscreens. A good example are the sunscreens from Paula's Choice, they are being sold as non-nano in the US, while in Europe they have to label them as nano sunscreens.

    Thank you for the video, I am wondering thou why not to put more accent on other chemical sunscreens which are safe for the environment and don't leave a white film (especially for darker skin types). Is that because in the US many of those are not in the market? Are the other chemical sunscreen sold in EU safe for marine life?

Since the Skinacea sunscreen chart was not entirely accurate do you know of a chart/list of the filters available and which protection they offer that we can use as a shopping guide for sunscreens? You recommendations are always excellent but there are so many sunscreens out their you couldnt possibly review them all. Thank you as always!

    Not gonna lie, I switched to physical sunscreens while I lived in Hawaii, and most of the ones I tried just didn't prevent sunburn the way chemical filters did. But you know what worked better than all of that? A long sleeve swimsuit and leggings. If I was out on the water for hours, doing something like surfing or freediving, that's what I wore, along with a hat. Surf companies have developed some super cute outfits! The physical sunblock was good enough for lounging at the beach, however, if I wanted to wear a bikini and look cute.

      Great idea! NOAA recommends that as well on their webpage about this. Mainstream swimwear could further evolve and look more like the cool surfer/diving gear you mention in order to address this, don't you think? How many women without perfect bodies would be ecstatic to have a more figure-friendly option as well??

    Wow a strong video with a powerful message. My Dr years ago saw some slight sunburn on me and said I know you don’t sunbathe but that yellow mass in the sky isn’t a sun tan machine it’s a ball of radiation. I’ve always remembered that. I’ve stopped buying micro beads in all products I buy.
    For cleaning and cosmetic. Everything has plastic around it it’s awful.
    So now some sunscreen is harmful to the environment.

      yep! Restricting tourism would have a greater impact on the health of the reef imo (and environment...less air travel/jet fuel/pollution)...but for the Hawaii economy, I imagine banning two ingredients is less likely to cause financial damage than restricting the number of people who visit the beach

    Very interesting and insightful and yes, alarming at the same time. One person commented about Japanese sunscreens being ok as they don’t contain these ingredients but sadly Octinoxate can be found in a high percentage of Japanese sunscreens and sunscreens throughout the world 🌎 I think a really important take and failure on sunscreens is not so much placed on the consumer but it’s the failure in scientific research in finding the next generation of sunscreens that we so badly need right now. Sunscreen filters that don’t break down, or need the hassle of reapplying and sunscreens that don’t damage people or the environment. It’s also governments and world 🗺 health organisations that are failing us that are not putting enough pressure for more scientific research to be done in this global crisis situation. Dermatologists do an amazing 😉 job such as Dr Dray in highlighting and treating us and we need more people like her that can hopefully change this situation and more pressure should be placed on global governments, world health organisations and the scientific community. It’s simple give us a sunscreen that works for all and we and the world would be a better place....

    People need to put vanity aside and perhaps not sit in the sun. Tans have been lauded as sexy and pleasing. Cosmetic companies need to work double time to create tinted sunscreens that work on all skin colors. I prefer the Korean ones I get from amazon and yesstyle.

    Hi Dr. Dray. Recently purchased some items by Hada Labo, Cerave, EltaMD, and Banana Boat based on your recommendations. Sadly, none of them are cruelty-free. As a fellow vegan I incorrectly assumed you’d only recommed cruelty-free products. Is it possible to do a segment on cruelty-free products?
