  • Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen has an incredible drumset. It's half acoustic and half electronic, here's how it all works:
    Trigger pedals he's used:
    Custom Prototypes
    Shark Pedals
    Axis Custom Trigger pedals
    Pads:
He’s used the Simmons SDS9 pads (six of them) for kick, snare, toms. I even saw a picture of him using some DDrum pads at one point. He switched to Hart Dynamics AcuPads, later to the Hammered Chrome shells. Lately, he’s been on the Pintech train. He uses Concert-Cast Mesh Pads, 2 Bar Triggers from Pintech. He’s also using acoustic shells that have been converted with Pintech trigger systems inside. When he uses an acoustic snare, he’s got a DDrum Acoustic Pro Snare Trigger. That snare mic is just a backup in-case the trigger breaks. Three hats have triggers built into them.
    MODULES:
In the past he’s been seen using the legendary Simmons SDX Module. At one point he ran his pads ran into a Simmons MTM Midi Interface, and that ran into a Akai S900 Sampler (samples of his own drums and Simmons SD7 sounds)
    Today:
Every pad and pedal runs into a Sub-Snake (A and B Rigs use Whirlwind, The C-Rig Uses a Radial snake. That sub-snake runs to a rack unit where the drum tech is. C-Rigs uses Moto 24io Converters (A and B Rigs use M Audio Delta 1010s) The converters run to 2 laptops (one is for backup)
2x: US Audio AB8 (can switch between the two computers here)
    2x: Radial SW8 MK2
Grace 902 Headphone Amplifiers (running to PCIE cards mounted in expansion chassis on the Rack that are routed to express card slots)
Furman P 3600 ARG Power Conditioner
Universal Power Input box that takes anypower from around the world and outputs 60hz 120 Volts
    UPS battery backup
He’s got RJM MasterMind GT Pedal Board to change kit presets between songs. Rick has one on stage, and the Drum tech has one backstage too.
    Rack Weighs 450 Pounds
Going through all the Rack units, there’s a total latency of 2.1 Milliseconds and Rick uses Dave Clark Headphones.

If you all could chill out in the comments that would be great. Saying "the accident was his fault" or "he's overrated" doesn't make you smarter than everyone. Respect the art and the drummer.

On their tour in 2017, as a drummer myself, I paid to do the meet N greet with front row tickets. Earlier that year due to my disability I tried to commit suicide and almost succeeded but my wife found me, anyway, we were talking to the woman who takes your picture with the band about my failed attempt and she had tears in her eyes and said the guys need to hear this so she told me we had to go very last to meet them. Once it was my turn I overheard the woman tell them this is the guy, so I rounded the corner of the curtain and there the stood! Each one of the guys gave me a big hug, shook my hand and told me “glad your still with us!” I was in shock! At the end of the line was my hero, Rick Allen! As we got in line to take our pictures I asked Rick if I could put my arm around him he said of course and this was the best moment of my life! Once the pictures were taken, Rick stayed around talking to me for about 15-20 minutes where we talked about his accident, his meeting with the wounded warriors, and his foundation. I am eternally grateful for this experience and what a great group of guys they all are! This is a great video thank you for all your research it took to put this together!

People should NEVER say that the accident was Rick’s fault! It was a bad accident. He doesn’t deserve criticism! He deserves sympathy. He is blessed to still be alive. I am so glad that he is. He is a damn good drummer to have one arm. Def Leppard is still my all-time favorite band. Rick, keep up the great work. You are very special! Peace.

I actually dated Rick Allen’s ex-wife. Boy was she a gold digger. She was actually still married to him when he had the car accident and the girl that was in the Corvette he crashed with him was not her. I was really very Lucky to catch her in a lie about 3 weeks after I started to date her. She called me one Saturday evening about 6pm and told me that she wouldn’t be able to go out because her mother was sick and she needed to go check on her. I went over to her house the next day and a friend of hers come by ( she thought I was just her friend) and said how did it go last night. Ray Charles could’ve seen by the way that girl, made that comment that she definitely didn’t go to her mothers that night. 😁Lucky me.

I can't believe that people made negative comments about either Rick or his drumming, ...... thanks for the in depth break down, I have MS and play drums to build motor skill function and stay active.

To be Rick Allen's drum tech you need to have no less than three PhD's...

So much respect for this cat….he refused to be a victim…he refused to be held back by an enormous challenge. He improvised, overcame and adapted. They should call the band Rick Allen and Def Leppard….

Rick Allen was playing barefoot long before the accident. He says playing with shoes would be like playing guitar with boxing gloves!

65 Drums - Thank you for that pinned response to the haters, I get so sick of people coming on to these pages and trashing an artist, you dont like a guy? Why are you watching videos of them? As for the accident, Rick has NEVER tried to play the victim over that accident, he was a young foolish man who was very tired from relentless touring and was just letting his hair down, luckily no one was killed. Now, about the drum kit - so here I was thinking I was all modern by adding some adjustable toms to my 5 piece lol! Man, I hope they pay their techs a LOT of money. He has to be a very accurate drummer, when I saw how close all those cymbals were and then you revealed they were high hats I was blown away. Keep on rockin Rick! Great video !!

Rick Allen is an inspiration for anyone that's been through tragedy, especially those who've lost a limb. Fuck the haters, this guys a beast. Also, damn impressed with his drum tech, that's like getting hired to be tech and then being told you're also a mechanical and electrical engineer now too. I have nothing but love for this guy and his band for sticking with him throughout the years. Oh, and Hysteria, no wait Rocket, no wait, Rock of Ages, no wait Animal, dammit...

Not matter his skill before or after the accident, the man plays at a professional level with one arm. He is a legend and an inspiration.

Nothing but respect and admiration for Rick Allen. He has overcome so much, including a life threatening accident that left him with only one arm. I have 2 arms and 2 legs but, Rick can out perform me on the drums.

I have only a small idea of what Rick went through. I was in a near fatal motorcycle accident almost 8 years ago and had 16 major surgeries on my left leg to keep it, including a donor bone about 8 inches in my left femur. Never thought I’d play the drums again after 45 years. But, with great doctors, and the will and perseverance, I began to play again, doing shows every weekend, still to this day as I write this blog. 4/1/18. Never made it to the big time, but made a lot of money playing my drums.

Back in 2007, Stewart Copeland of The Police had some similar drums set up for their reunion tour and let the audience know that he HIGHLY respected Rick Allen for his creativity. :)

I've been a fan of Def Leppard ever since "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" came out in 1981. I know nothing about the technical terms related to drums. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly! This video is so interesting!

The last video I just watched was of Rick Allen talking about how he plays. In it, he said that he has played barefoot his entire life. He even went so far as to say that he would fall out of bed as a teen and just start playing, not even worrying if he has clothes on, let alone any type of shoes. He also compared playing drums with shoes on like trying to play guitar with boxing gloves on. In this video, you give the impression that he started playing barefoot after he lost his arm, which according to him is not the case.
