  • A final reflection of Carson's and its impacts on Chicagoland. I hope everyone enjoys this final look at Carson's while it was still open. The video features Carson Pirie Scott stores located at the Yorktown Center in its final days of operation and the Carson's at the Southlake Mall in Hobart, IN while it was midway through its liquidation sale. Both stores are still sitting vacant today while the malls they're attached to still soldier on.

Carson's at Southlake Mall was my Carson's store. I grew up in northwestern Indiana, and Southlake was the mall we visited the most. Their space in the mall was always a must-visit in December to check out all the incredible decorations they put up. My family moved from northwestern Indiana when I was six, so I only get back there periodically, and I couldn't tell you the last time I visited Southlake. So sad to see one of my childhood memories out of business.
I really can't thank you enough for documenting the last vestiges of this store's history. Thank you so, so much.

Yorktown looks like a great mall. Wishing something would come in there. Iowa still has a lot of vacant Younkers as well.

I agree, this is just one word, sad. I’ve seen Carson’s Yorktown vacant for such a long time now and I’m like, “What are they going to do with this vacant space!?” I’m glad two of there stores in Chicagoland are reopened as two other retail chains. That could, I think do well in Schaumburg and Orland Park. I should check out and see what they’ve done with the Charlestowne Mall demolition and remodeling soon. There’s know acticles on what they’ve done there.

The Carson's in Yorktown was probably the best after the State St store closed.

The red carpet and interior look at 5:34, reminds me of what the store at Harlem-Irving Plaza looked like on the upper floor by children's clothing, at the end. It also was JUST AS EMPTY upstairs, except for store shelves/furnishings like at Yorktown. BTW if you didn't know, plans were to turn the 2nd floor into a Hobby Lobby, and the 1st floor will become a new wing of shops? I'm not sure. They also gutted the inside of the old Carson's space, if you haven't been by lately.
I also like the brick exterior look, of the store at Southlake. Interior really felt like it had a lot of items inside, a la JCPenney. Like you, I really miss Carson's. Wish Boscov's would expand westward to the Chicago area, myself. But the fact they had a bankruptcy in the late 2000s, means today they are a LOT more slow and conservative with their expansion to new locations. Before the bankruptcy, you could argue that at times they may've been expanding too quickly. Unfortunately, I doubt anytime soon they'll expand further west than eastern Ohio. Which is a shame, since they're run extremely well.

A lot of these stores will not be filled anytime soon. If another retailer or an alternative use was there, it would have happened by now. You are quite correct seeing these stores like this is depressing. Sad as well.

I’m lowkey hoping they can come back. I know they technically have but let’s be real they haven’t. I haven’t heard any news about them in like a year.

The one in Evergreen Park is now a Z Gallerie Outlet after CSC Generation bought Z Gallerie. They apparently had issues getting suppliers to sell to them.

Lost Departments wow I didn’t even know that well I guess Carsons is Indeed gone and only an online retailer now. Sad I wish they had someone reopen them as high end department stores like they were back in the day before “The Bon Ton” came along and ruined them both financially and aesthetically.

@@noahvoris3637 Actually Bergner's ruined, if not destroyed, Carson's when they took over around 1990ish. It was all downhill from there.

Yorktown is going to die (again). It keeps trying over and over. Survived the recession. But this Carson’s was BUSY. as soon as JCP closes it’s done. Back when wards closed, they tore part down and converted it to extend the mall and added the outside. That was smart but it never filled up. I do hope the best for Yorktown but oak brook mall is so nice compared to Yorktown.
