Great channel sir. I too am an owner operator doing an inframe on a MBN cat converting it to a 6NZ right now. Good video on the liner protrusion. Just a tip, put your spout on your 5 gallon bucket on the top side when you pour your oil. You won't get the burping.
I used to drive a 1985 Ford LTL 9000 with a 3406B and a 13 speed when I worked for a logging company. It was rated at 450 HP and had 44,000 pound rears. We pulled a whole tree chipper that weighed 100, 000 pounds. It wouldn't go but 72 mph but it would do it up the hill or down the hill. Owner bought it new and I got it when the driver got one too many DUI's. It was black and trimmed out in chrome and aluminum. Sharp truck. Wonder where it is now...
I think its impressive that you are able to do a rebuild yourself, besides being a driver. Thats a lot of skills. Plus, I grew up in Peoria, Illinois, Caterpillar headquarters. My Dad worked for Cat. I’ll always be a Cat fan.
The last time I was up close to one of these exact engines was my old mans 85 International Eagle cabover. This old Cat sounds amazing...you did it right for sure.
My favorite truck engine. I had a W900 and a 359 both powered by 3406B 425’s turned 10% over and backed with Fuller RR 13’s. Pete had 355’s 8n the rears and KW 373’s and I pulled 11,500WG Propane Tanks with those tractors. Man I miss those days!
I am just now trying to get my first Cat 3406 mechanical engine with a 13 speed fuller. It has an air starter and less than 200,000 miles. It sits in a beautiful 1993 Volvo GMC Western Star. This will be my first cab over engine truck, my other truck is 2003 International and has a c-15. I will use this new truck as a day cab as I line haul milk tankers and I will be the only one driving her. Guess I have to learn how to write the books instead of pushing buttons on my ELD. Seen your post and know it’s been a year, but you seemed to know my engine and transmission. My new truck is not very popular and I have found few videos on the Volvo GMC Western Star. Guess I can start my RUclips channel. I also own a beautiful 2010 International with a Maxforce 13. As you can imagine it’s a nice yard ornament and almost cost me my business. I have the choice of putting another $15-20,000 in my Maxforce, and hoping that is the last problem or buying this old beautiful piece of history. I’m going with the old school, tried and true. Here’s the details on my new truck. Cat 3404 ATAAC 425HP, rears RT-145s 3.73 ratio, 13,200 front, cab WHL64T. I want to chrome her out, convert to flat face super singles on the front and super singles on the rears and update to all LED lighting. Dual exhaust would be awesome and all new rubber and red brakes. She has a fuller 13 and I think axel lockers, but if not, I will add them. I want her fire engine red. She was originally military green, repainted gray. I will add cruise control too. Anything else I am forgetting? This one is long so a diamond plated cat walk between the cab and fifth wheel and new half fenders. The only other thing I have considered is air bags for the front, but haven’t seen the front springs so don’t know if it is possible. I would appreciate your opinion.
Make sure you carry spare AFRC diaphragm. Easy to fix but may go out easily. We have a 3ZJ and have been in this situation. Also, we are replacing the OR-3448 nozzles with the OR-8785 marine nozzles. We should go from 5 mpg to 6.5 mpg. We’ll let you know how it goes. Plus from what we’ve done research on, if we go with a BW 119123 turbo, we should be putting 550 to the ground. Waiting for an oil sample return (which might be something you mention in your videos). When we find the need for a rebuild, we will be moving to a marine cam and crank.
With my Channel's normal content suspended for a while I will be bringing the truck in more videos. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE to get to see the new ones as they come out.
Uncle Festus driving a cool old tractor . FSC Festus Semi Company . How cool is that ? lol . I would love to live your life . Keep on Trucking My Brother .
Love it. Love that calm confident idle of the Cat 3406B. I have a very similar Freightliner cabover with 3406B. Mine has the air-to-air charge air cooler.
Adept Ape says never fill thru the centre hole of either the oil or fuel filters when priming. This will introduce unfiltered fuel/oil into the engine/pump.
I never gave that a thought. But that makes sense. I have put them in empty before, but it takes FOREVER to get fuel through with the hand primer pump.
@@fsctrucking An easy way to avoid any problems is to use a plastic plug or rubber cork to block the centre hole and fill the filter thru the outside smaller holes so that everything gets filtered before leaving the filter. If I'm not mistaken, some Cat filters have a warning on the filter housing saying not to pre-fill at all.
Did you have to do anything to break in new pistons and liners to seat rings? Some people say need to put it under a load immediately. Great video! You explain in detail which is very helpful
According to your engine serial number, it was built 3-9-1984. Keen put it in service 2-22-1989. Engine is a 400 HP @ 1800 RPM's. If more road speed is needed it can be rerated to a 400 HP @ 2100 RPM's. Depending on ratio's and such. You could gain around nine MPH road speed.
Classic White Cats, awesome!! I remember back in the 80's my best friend dad had an 83 Peterbilt 359 and he rebuilt the engine. Was painted white and I was asking my self as a young kid, why white??? Its a CAT. lol
I just noticed you have a swing plate. Never go through Michigan swing plates are illegal in that state. I had to remove mine in front of the DOT cop or take a ticket.
This is all extremely cool. What happens to the gearstick and its linkage when you tip the cab forward to access the engine? Does the gearshifter remain intact or does it have to be unhooked from the gearbox?
Cat engines has a strong and muscular sound. Anyway i enjoyed your past videos too. Greetings
Nothing like the sound of an old 3406B mechanical caterpillar. Love the sound of this engine!!! ❤️❤️🔥

I thought I'd rewatch the video, it's really cool to watch Orwell come back to life
LOL.. Knock, bang, crunch, But Ahhh look how she smoothens out. There is no truck engin as even comes close to a 3406 for sound and durability.
I hope you understand exactly what you have. A new engine, pre emission, E log exempt. This truck is worth a lot of money to a lot of drivers.
This is why I bought it and intend on possibly another.
Sure the hell is brother
Actually gave up an 07 367 with a 550 ISX for a 378 with a mechanical 525 N14!
@@fsctrucking New gearbox now....Ready for the next Million
Sounds f in great. Dude. Nice

I had a 3406b cat in my 86 big hood international. Loved it, 5 mpg loaded-empty or up a tree. Good solid power plant.

There is a a aura about this man. I would recognize him as a truck driver or a all around mechanical handyman. FSC has the look LoL..
Hey, from a 35 yr. Cat dealer mechanic, nice job, sounds great. Good luck with it!
Thank you!

Amazing motor. It’s best motor ever built

1693 cat that is a great motor double overhead cam that was a strong engine
The old cat sounds really strong, I think you did a very good job on it. I hope it does you as well as my old B model has done me.
My favorite diesel sound is from a rattling 1693 at start-up, then this 3406B. It sure sounds cool AF.
When that engine started and settled in it sounded so sweet! Great video.
Got to love coming back and seeing where it all started
No better engine in the world
Nothing like the sound of a B model, have one in a 91 Eagle!

Hit dam your rig badass
Matterhorn white is still used on Cat marine engines.
BTW, you want about a 4 degree advance on the set up.
Oooh......the sound........
U can't beat a cackling cat pistons like buckets love that black smoke
Hard to beat those old mechanical b model cats.
This is like a shot at night big could someone give me a part number for the 4 head bolts/ hold down bolts for the jake brakes on a 3406B
Cool lil kitten under that pete... nice vid keep on truckin great content !!
Thank you. Be sure to subscribe. More content with that truck to come.
Yup. Definitely seem that truck at the chrome shop in Oshkosh.
It sounds really good
It's alive.
Do you steve have rail cars on the ceiling
That sounds so good, nice job.
Love the rebuild video, oh by the way. Nice Junior Dragsters you got hanging in there Steve
Sometime now that weather getting nicer, id like to talk with you a bit, an since like classics, maybe bring the 72 kaiser m818, no cat but a sc 855

Great job on the rebuild 💯💯💯👍👍👍. Sounds great 👍 👌
I just put a 3406b 4mg in a 1984 359 what’s the easiest way to boost the horse power up like another 50hp
Awesome stuff Steve 👏 safe trucking

You are correct in its history. I have the same data.
Lol at the beer flu 😅🤣🤣
great job
So kool driver did a great job 💯%
I should have you help me rebuild mine like you did

With coolant in the oil the one thing I would have done would be at least Inspect the rod and Crank bearings but most likely change them
The inframe was completely done. Every bearing was replaced as they were damaged. New everything. Cylinder packs, head, turbo, nozzles etc
How much is the rebuild kit?
@@cabovercartel7671 there is no kit for 3406B. It was per part basis. 17-18 $K.
Kinda break up dumb shit go in on ...put smile on my face...i work nights
wipe those filters, true proffessional
I just noticed you have a swing plate. Never go through Michigan swing plates are illegal in that state. I had to remove mine in front of the DOT cop or take a ticket.
Only illegal if truck is registered in that state. Cop was an idiot
Lmao beer flue lol
Sounds real good dude. I subscribed just for that right away
This is all extremely cool. What happens to the gearstick and its linkage when you tip the cab forward to access the engine? Does the gearshifter remain intact or does it have to be unhooked from the gearbox?
No. Linkage drops down and around the frame and comes to the trans from the side. Designed to move with cab
No linkage. Its cable shift.
New to your channel.. nice rig.. what is the HP on that cat 🐈
I never messed with the pump since I owned it. I may have been worked prior. Factory it is 400hp. Its a 7FB
How much and how long did you have to crank it before frying the starter?
Do I count all the starts from back then up until now?
@@fsctrucking I was referring when you were cranking it to get the oil circulated.
New sub men !!!! DEFINITELY
I love it....
Goooddd job. Man
Never mind about straight piping this I see why it’s unnecessary even more hahaha
How about t 800
Man bad ass 😁😁😁😁
Still should have painted in yellow.
back in 84 they were white for kw and peterbilt
12:42 I smell global warming, how dare you😎
What hp it rated at please ?
Have you ever experienced a 3406b dies at idle after warm
Not mine. I'd start at the basics then work your way in.
It seems she is sucking air or something in the pump is weak. It should bark off when starting up.
I WOULD HAD PAINTED IT ''' YELLOW '''' 😸
It was Materhorn White from factory.
Why u use 10w30 man 15w40 is better for it
for better oil flow cold starting.
Go to work
*HOW DARE YOU*
