I'm a retired neurologist and faculty at my state University. I think this is an superb video at several levels. First, I really like that you begin with some thoughts on "know what you are getting into". With most jobs and most careers, there is the theory of what a job/career is, and there is the reality of what a job/career is. And, they can be be very different. Traditional (bricks and mortar schools) education is far too expensive these days to wander aimlessly through it hoping you will figure out what you want to do. The prepared student has done some "homework" to get some real-world idea what a career or job might really be like. So, you start off with this idea. Excellent! Then, in the rest of just 12 minutes, you lay out the path and preparation needed to actually get a job in data science. Excellent again. In this era we need many, many more videos like this - laying out a real-world picture of a career path within a few minutes. I could say much more but this isn't the place. So, THANK YOU! - not for me, but for young people everywhere who might want to follow this path.
World need to get serious about improving in all areas of science and we do want to make it sir. We are really getting serious into this with DS and ML, thanks for the words! Saludos.
Step 1: Research the Role Step 2: Study the Job Description Step 3: Learn Math, Statistics, & ML Step 4: Learn to Code Step 5: Build Project Portfolio Step 6: Prepare for interview
Yayyy thank you so much for this!!! I recently just got in to Boeing and they are going to cover my tuition 100% and I wanted to have the courage to go for a STEM program!!! This vid has made it more insightful for me!!!
Another great video! Your content is quite straightforward and easier to grasp. I have enrolled in the Caltech Data Science program and am happy with it so far!
I have joined Caltech’s data science training program, thanks to your well-researched video and clear recommendation. I will share my experience soon. Keep up the good work!
Thanks dor this video Sundas. I like the reverse engineering approach where you go about looking at what people are already doing in your targeted sector then focus on building those kind of projects. Very good advice 🤝
“Reverse engineer” or “working backward” is one of the most efficient way of learning anything. It narrow downs your focus quickly and helps you learn fast.
As an aspiring data scientist, I appreciate this video for sharing how to break into the world of data science. I had already heard about Caltech but now I can actually opt for its data science bootcamp.
@@vincentlee4903 I wrote to them, they sent me this link www.simplilearn.com/post-graduate-program-data-science#overview it's almost 3000$, I dont know if it's worthy, @Ayesha, have you started the program? cam you tell us about it?
In addition to learning R, Python, and SQL, if you have time to learn a 4th language I recommend SAS. Ten years I wasn't sure it would still be popular by 2023, but a lot of companies (especially in the pharmaceutical, insurance, government fields + academia) still use SAS.
I second this. I’m a data analyst now and my boss who has been in finance for the last 30 years still uses SAS and I find myself needing to run his code quite often. For context, I use JupyterLab to run my Python notebooks.
Thanks for the comprehensive information on data science. It has propelled me in the right direction to kickstart my career. I have enrolled in Caltech’s Data Science Bootcamp.
This was a great overview Sundas! I'll second being careful with picking your learning resource... There's a LOT of options out there... Very important to use something that has a data science focus! Thanks for posting.
@Sundas Khalid I was just wondering what data I could even use to determine such a thing.. Maybe if I could find data on new job listings and compare the volume over time... I will have to do some research
Greetings Sundas, I am studying medicine and for personal reasons I am going to migrate to another country and leave my university. I am researching about Data Analysis and this video has been very enlightening for me. Thank you very much
It's funny how I got here. I am not looking for a job, I am just fascinated by so much information we have around us, easily available yet we don't know how to process them in a useful manner. I love to investigate and predict what could happen and recognize patterns (I'm a full time trader). I want to be able to handle those data professionally.
I'll add when learning data science or statistics (aren't they the same thing?) make sure you know the difference between causal inference and predictive modeling (ie, machine learning). Both types of model may use linear regression, but outcomes of interest, evaluating model results, and variable selection can be very different.
Thank you very much @Sundas Khalid, the video is clear and educative for beginners to this field. I like your idea of beginning the course with Statistics & ML as opposed to coding with Python. 💛👍
I was getting a bachelors in CIS, but I hated how the courses were taught and the CIS classes didn’t interest me. I switched to integrated studies (“created your degree” and a lot of employers don’t accept this degree or know of it) but I am minoring in data science and have taken basic accounting, economics, and management classes, along with economic data analysis and econometrics. I am really trying to get as much experience in data related courses without spending extra money taking extra classes that I don’t meet the prerequisites for (probability (math), data science and machine learning (math), finance, etc) I don’t have the engineering data structures class (I took the “regular” course) and I don’t have calc 2 But I have calc 1, math analysis, and two stats classes.
It’s 100% possible. I believe it’s never too late to go back to school. In fact, I might go back to school after my kids are gone off to colleges. You should go for it!
Hi Sundas, Very practical advice. I would like to know how one can get around the No Job offer - > -No Experience > No JOB offer endless loop, even when everything like self-learning, small project portfolio is done. Not sure if bootcamps and self initiated projects are even considered as industry experience when looking for actual jobs..? I’m looking to start my self study for transitioning into Data Science from Project Management, and have already done a very expensive online course but have not been able to break into Data Science. May be I am missing some piece but that's where your own experience from similar situations and struggles would be immensely helpful for everyone following this thread 🙏👍
Key Notes: If you're looking to learn Data Science in 2023, follow these steps: 1. Research the different job roles in Data Science to understand what each role entails before choosing a specific one. 2. First, focus on building a strong foundation in Statistics, Mathematics, and Machine Learning. Then, move on to coding with languages like SQL and Python. 3. Create a project portfolio that includes practical experience using free resources such as Kaggle, Google data search, or your own self-generated datasets. 4. Prepare for job interviews by practicing on platforms like LeetCode and engaging in mock interviews to perform well under pressure. 5. Keep in mind that the job market is competitive, so persistence is key when pursuing a career in Data Science.
wow great infos! I agree 100% that you should start with statistics in general and then move to ML. I was the type of guy who began learning all of this stuff like SQL, Python or Pandas, but i have to admit these are just TOOLS! If you understand what you are doing and you have some basic programming skills, you can search and learn the proper techniques on the fly! That is why doing projects is much more important to do, because you will start to realize how difficult it is to apply what is needed and by doing it you will learn so much! For me reading books about ML helped me understand the WHY, in a way understand the bigger picture of what a Data Scientist actually is doing.
I'm a us citizen and have my undergrad but its not in anything DS or tech related. In your opinion, would you recommend a masters at this point and put away 2-3 years or to go and practice the theories online and go from there and/or get an entry level job and work up
