    This analysis seems off on a few levels.. I paid 67k for full electric seats, blue laser lights, m suspension. Harmon Kardon. You buy this car for the performance aspect without paying a premium for true M car. The x drive is for peace of mind in snow, gravel and wet roads. You’re also underselling the usefulness and utility of the large hatchback. The competitors you mentioned have hideous interiors . Really cheap textures. Regarding the Audi S5, you’re sacrificing reliability. The B58 in the M440i is bullet proof. The Audi S5 engine can’t hold a candle to it. That’s why Toyota chose the B58 for their Supra. THis car in the black or Brooklyn Grey is epic and the grill works for me.. It also adds greater cooling.

      Spot on. I was scratching my head through this entire review. Recommending an S5 over the M440i?! Why? Cause you like losing races? Cause you like visiting the mechanic? Cause you like old interiors? Oh you don’t like the grill? That’s ok, you’ll only ever see the BMWs tail lights in an S5 anyways. And I actually like the S5. Strange take by these guys to be sure, but I guess that’s why they say there’s no accounting for taste.

      I 100% agree with you, I have the 440i Coupé with every package in Brooklyn grey. The only reason I went with the 440i was for the X-Drive like you. It's a great value M sport car and I still get blown away by its ability to park itself.
      I have so many people tell me that they love my car. People love the front, I don't know what all the reviewers keep mentioning the grill in a derogatory way, just because it is different.

    I just purchased a used 2022 M440i Gran Coupe. And I have to say the comparison with the 440i coupe is kind of silly. And to suggest that the 440 coupe is a better car is even sillier. First the performance is vastly different. Obviously. If someone likes the 440 platform and wants more performance then the M440i is the obvious choice. But the silliest thing is to compare the coupe with a 4 door hatchback. All performance issues aside these are different animals that meet different needs and desires altogether. So I'm not sure I understand the reasoning there.
    Then there is the idea that the xDrive component "kills everything". I can't find any reviews that suggest that xDrive causes any significant loss of performance and in fact BMW specs suggest xDrive models of the M340i are faster off the line. (Of course now the M440i is available in rear drive so the point is moot anyway.) Many reviews in which the car is put through its paces also indicate the the xDrive models will allow a little freedom in the rear. So again, muddy reasoning without any real data to back it up.
    The day I purchased this car I also drove a similarly spec'd but rear wheel drive M340i. In terms of comfort and handling I felt no difference whatsoever. No, neither test drives were on the track but most of these M-lite cars are never going to see a racetrack. Mine won't. (I am a track day instructor and have a dedicated track car.
    I also don't understand why some reviewers hate on this car simply because it doesn't fit neatly into some imagined 3-4-5 hierarchy. It is a 4 door hatchback. Who cares what model number it has on it? Why does it exist? It offers all the performance of an M340i. It is slightly more practical than an M340i and its overall lines are more elegant than and arguably better looking than the M340i.
    Are the looks hurt by the grill? Yes. The grill is ugly. Yes, reviewers parrot this all the time but it is, in my opinion, objectively ugly. Will it grow on me. No. Will I stop noticing it in a few weeks? Yes. Do I care what anyone else thinks about it? No. So no big deal really.
    Finally, who is the car for? For me and my wife (she will be the primary driver) we get best in class performance, reasonable luxury and a little bit of practicality. This will make the car a great daily driver and an EXCEPTIONAL long trip GTO.

    • @Mattias1172
      @Mattias1172 Год назад +2

      xDrive helps considerably off the line. This car can 0-60 faster (with launch control) than cars with more horsepower than it due to its ability to put the power down with traction. xDrive in the car is also rear wheeled biased so its much different than your typical awd or 4x4 car.

      I'm looking for either that or the M340I, How do you find the back seats to be, is it that much smaller than a M340I or will it be able to fit 4 or 5 adults for 40 mins rides ?
      I also live in a very hot area so the ventilated seats in the M440I is what makes me lean towards it instead of the M340I also is there another reasons to pick the M340I intead of the M440I if i don't mind the looks ?

    • @bencompson
      @bencompson 4 месяца назад

      @@reflexx8332 I did not check out the rear seats in the M340i but it is my understanding that they have a little more leg room and a bit more head room. I am 6'4" tall. I can sit in the back seat of the M440i Gran Coupe with the front seat set to where my 5'5" wife has it set. The leg room is adequate but not good. Headroom is limited by the rear window so I can not lean way back. I could ride back there in reasonable comfort for 30 minutes or so with no problem. Obviously it will be much easier for shorter people. I don't think the M440i Gran Coupe or the M340i will be comfortable with 3 adults in the back seat. Maybe a short trip across town but that's it.
      Also, keep in mind that the front seats on the M440i Gran Coupe go waaaaay back. Further back than I need at 6'4" tall. When the front seat is pushed all the way back there is no leg room in the back but just remember that almost no one will need them that far back.
      For me the M440i Gran Coupe is way better looking than the M440i Coupe which to me has proportion issues for coupe which should be better looking. I just don't like its looks at all. I think the M340i is a bit bland looking. It isn't a bad looking car but it doesn't necessarily stand out from an Accord or a Camry in my opinion. But that's just my opinion. On the other hand, our Gran Coupe gets comments all the time. I live in a small city of about 60,000 near a very large city and I have yet to see another M440i Gran Coupe around town.
      I think the main practical things you have to decide with the M340i vs the M440i Gran Coupe is rear seat vs trunk. The M340i probably has better rear seat comfort. The M440i Gran Coupe has way better rear hatch space which is also way more accessible than a trunk.
      You can't go wrong either way. But, I would strongly recommend sitting and or riding in the rear seats of both models to see what you need.

      @@bencompson Thanks man appreciate the feedback, looks like the M440I GC is the better car overall and with the M440I having ventilated seats and the M340I don't makes it the better pick with the added bonus of having a more usable trunk without much compromises for the back seats, but one last question, how do feel about the extra added weight in the M440I GC compared to the lighter M340I with them both having the same engine and power do you feel that its a bit more floaty or less nimble when driving it compared to the 3

    • @bencompson
      @bencompson 4 месяца назад

      @@reflexx8332 I did not drive the 3 enough to really make a good comparison. I don't know how much the 3 weights but the M440i GC is heavy. However, given its weight I am astonished that it does not feel heavy. It is not floaty at all. It brakes like a beast (although brake modulation is not the best I've driven). For spirited on road driving it feels very agile to me. At the same time it does not ride harshly either. My track car is a 350Z and it is unpleasantly harsh even in stock form. My previous daily driver was an Infiniti G37 Coupe and it was a bit harsh as well but did not handle any better than the M440i GC all of which is to say that I think BMW has hit a very happy medium with the GC.
      Would it make a good track car? I don't know. But that is not what it or the M340i are intended to be. That's what the M3 is for. We considered an M3 but it just doesn't make sense to me for the money and all the track/performance features that would never get used (by me anyway) and that make it less pleasant to drive day to day.
      Anyway, between the M340i and the M440i GC I don't think you can make a bad choice.

    It’s weird because in video and pictures it doesn’t look as good but in person-seeing it in 3D brings out the nuances of the design, especially the grille. It doesn’t look “flat”, it has some depth to it.
    I’m starting to suspect the enthusiasts that don’t like them are the ones that spend a lot of time online on Reddit or forums just mimicking each other’s opinions. 🤣 Same thing happened when Bangle started going for it!

The 3 series gains the advantage of a more rigid chassis (as it does not have a hole for a hatch), lighter curb weight in rwd or x-drive form, better subjective front end styling, and maybe most important for the cost conscious; more affordable pricing.

    What the hell does BMW think ? $60 and up without power seats ? So No memory seats . Forget it . I am thinking about trade in my 2019 Infiniti Q50S for this Baby at the end of the year , no way for a luxury car without memory seat and but manual . I do not want to spend $50k and up for a car with 4 cylinders , no way . 4 cylinders is so boring after 2- 3 years cause it is weak ….

    That middle rear seat is useless with the hump for the awd. It’s a solid 4 seater. Can’t wait to trade in my 430i GC for the 440i m lite. Only problem is I can’t find any used ones with low miles 😢

    I was looking at this last month when I was in the market to upgrade my car. Ended up getting the M240i instead. It has the same motor but was 10k cheaper. Also it reminded me of my FRS I got rid of a few years ago.
    PS: If you guys are looking to do a review on the M240i I’m local in Utah. Just hit me up and we can figure out the details.

      By the way, mine is rear wheel drive with all the available options, electric everywhere. 7.5 liter for 1000km after 3000km. It pull like mad. Don’t let it stand on a restaurant parking, people will stop and admire it. I feel young again like in the time I bought my first car, a 1965 Mustang with a 289 engine. Time has past but the feeling of power is still the. Cheers.

    So here's a kicker: the i4 M50 which is a faster and more powerful vehicle that slots between M3 and M440i in capability is the same price...fully loaded it's just a few grand more but it also costs much less to own, and if your lifestyle can accommodate an EV it isn't the logical choice to go with the M440i over the i4 M50.

  • @trevorsutherland5263

    Yes $70K is far too much; manual seats is due to chip shortage; have seen it mentioned in the news a few times but even with them that is too much. Beaver face grille looks A LOT better if you get the blackout package (because it turns the border of the grille black, eliminating the "nostril" look). In 430i guise with the upgraded leather and M Sport pkg, you can walk out with this for $50K - $52K. 35mpg, superior dynamics, build quality far better than any rival near the price, and you still can rip off a 0-60 in 5.2 (if you go X-Drive). Ughhh, that is a SLAM DUNK, imho.

    Again, the people who dislike the styling were never in the market nor could they even afford it. The amount of new 4 Series, and M3/M4’s I’ve seen on the roads says that people do like the styling.

    Great review Paul and Todd. It’s interesting to see what aspects shift your thoughts on this versus the rwd 430 and lesser extant the M4 from tv. It also makes me curious to see how your think the all electric i4 flavor of this form factor will compare? It seems like most of the electric competition in the price range are CUVs outside of the Model 3 and Polestar 2. It’d be interesting to see if a RWD i4 would hold merit as a (butter-faced) hatch alternative to a Mach E, Volvo C40, Ioniq5, Q4, etc etc that isn’t a crossover.

You guys really should spend a little more time researching current issues before you spend 20% of the show whining about and downgrading the car because your press car came with manual seats. What a waste of time. That was a temporary production issue. They now come with auto seats just like the convertible you tested, and it doesn't cost more.

In addition my neighbor took his family of 4 to Utah from Los Angeles on a road trip with comfort for their kids in the back (11 and 15 yr old). This car exists because if you'r carrying cargo more often than passengers it's far more practical than the M340i sedan. On the flip side, you lose backseat space. The REAL dream would be if BMW brought the M340i Touring to North America. THAT car makes the Gran Coupe irrelevant in almost every respect except for the coupe styling.

Many, and I mean MANY people like the new aggressive and bold styling. Dosent look like every other BMW made for the last 30 years. Also please try and remember not everyone is buying cars based solely on the race car qualities.
