  • Today I'm sharing one of my most requested videos: a tour of my china collection! Both my Mum and I adore pottery, and in this video we chat through why we both started collecting china, which brands and styles we buy, as well as where and how we shop for ceramics. Do you love china too, and do you collect any pieces in particular?

Beautiful collection! Very sensible to only collect what one loves and use I think! Have been collecting frogs (ornamental ones) since childhood, not much use but they do bring joy. I was inspired by an old lady we used to visit as children, she collected elephants and always let us admire them as much as we wanted. (I understand you might not read this as it is 2 years old but the video was so lovely)

Only came across you yesterday, you must take a trip to Southport there's a lovely little Victorian book shop called broadhursts they sell antique and new books and will still wrap them in brown paper and string if you ask them.I only found it when my youngest son was in his teens,he loved going. I even left them in the brown paper when they were a birthday or Christmas gift he loved opening them. I now take my triplet grandsons sadly not as often as with Jon and not since before the pandemic and have yet to take my granddaughter Athena, looking forward to going with them again. The bookshop is near the market hall and there's an antique centre not to far away on Lord st.. and plenty of charity shops.

I live quite close to Denby Pottery so it was often a place that my junior school used to take us to on school trips. I remember painting plates and glazing them there. I love a cute floral tea set but I’ve got 2 autistic children, one of whom probably has ADHD as well and no China is safe in any small radius of them. Seeing all your lovely china, I have to resist my normal urge to shout “Don’t touch anything- get away from the breakables!” Maybe one day I’ll have a home safe for some but I’m quite clumsy myself as well so we’ll just have to see. Thanks for showing us all that lovely lot xx

    • @MirandaMills

My mum pretty much just drinks regular English breakfast style tea. I drink more varied teas & like oolong & camomile a lot too. Earl grey for visitors because many British people love Earl Grey (though I hate it with milk!). Pretty much any cake goes with tea in my book. See our books & bakes videos for inspiration! Xxx

I just saw “Wild Strawberries” by Wedgwood at Macy’s in the US, but it was a raised print cream on cream color. So it didn’t have the recognized delicate little illustration. I guess to accommodate modern clean lines? It made me a little grumpy haha! How dare they! That’s okay. Maybe that’ll be a new family’s beloved favorite. I just love the classic floral styles.

My small everyday china is Villeroy & Bloch. I don’t know much about brands but I love the vintage/classic look of this type of china you showed. I learned something new. My taste for this vintage style comes from my grandmother. But unfortunately, I’m the only one in the family with this classic/vintage taste. My friends and family are always trying to convince me to change my style. I can’t, I don’t like modern furniture or decoration commonly use here in the island. So, I’m alone in this area except for these type of videos. I guess they are not readers either, thank you to share your china collection with us. It was lovely! Gorgeous collection! ☕️ 🫖👌

I so enjoyed this as I collect China also. Mostly teapots, teacups and saucers, dinner plates and bowl, and sugar and creamers, little animals, small round plates I put my daily jewelry. I have some of the exact same pieces as you and Donna! Also my favorite color combination for China is blue and white!! I have other colors but mostly blue and white. I LOVE to buy teacups in antique or reveals shops. When using them I wonder about the person or persons who owned them and the teacup's story. I used to have a HUGE collection! Everything and anything you could want for a large teaparty. Unfortunately, I had to move into a small 1 bdrm. apt. It broke my hear to give so many cherished things away. I had to give away 20 teapots, only kept 8. Happy New Year 2024! 🤗

I so enjoyed seeing your collection, Miranda and Donna, lovely that you included the close-up inserts so we could see the details. And it was great to hear your personal and family stories around the crockery. I have a lot of china, too, and have had to weed out the collection occasionally - always a bit heartbreaking! I started when I was about 12 or 13 buying 20s and 30s hand-painted plates and tea sets. Like you, I like ceramics that have a connection with artists - I've got mugs by Emily Sutton and Ed Kluz, a pencil pot and egg cups by Alice Pattullo and plates by Christopher Brown. I have quite a few pieces by Susie Cooper but also like black and white plates from the 50s and 60s. And I have a soft spot for the 80s folksy stoneware Hearts and Flowers by Johnson Brothers. And much more! It is as addictive as collecting books, and as you say, charity shops are such a great source for both. More exciting stumbling across them than buying them online, I find. Sorry this is such a long post, you can see this really chimed with me. Thanks for such a lovely vlog! 🫖🍽🤍

Thank you both for a wonderful video! You have a beautiful china collection and I so enjoyed seeing it. I loved hearing how you became a collector at such a young age! Blue and white crockery is among my favourites, I have some willow pattern dishes to eat from which bring back memories of my childhood as both sets of my grandparents had them. I love Burleigh too, I have a huge blue calico fruit bowl which I was so excited to get! As well as a couple of full dinner sets I like to have a just few plates from different patterns so I can enjoy a change, it would be hard to restrict myself to a single pattern! I have a lot of Emma Bridgewater too. I enjoyed your varied collection, you introduced me to some new makes that I will have to look out for!

Love looking at your collection and so pleased to hear you use it every day - was so upsetting to find my Nans best China and linen all nicely packed away, and had never seen the light of day, after she passed away - what a waste. Every day is special I say, use it all and enjoy it! I collect pieces I like rather than makes - I adored the Bramley Hedge books as a child, I have some of the little mice ornaments - they are very sweet. I have always loved blue and white -especially Willow Pattern - my liking for it started aged 4 at primary school as we had a huge Willow pattern collage on the wall of the school hall. Had not seen the black floral ‘soho’ before, that’s really lovely. And the video makes me want to rush out to buy beautiful china X

enjoy your china. i liked playing with figurines as a child. liked their lack of softness. cool aloneness and fragility. like the human condition.
