I started learning Spanish at age 29. Up till then I spoke only English. Just curiosity. Like Moses said I never had any intention of learning to be fluent or make any big deal of it, once I got on a roll, it just started going and going. I literally started by picking up a small piece of text (A warranty message on a product) in Spanish and a dictionary to see if I could "de-code it". Then I couldn't find some of the words in the dictionary..... then I figured out that those were verbs that had to be "conjugated", so I learned about verbs...... then later another piece of grammar or a few other words. I got books, I read them. I put labels with the Spanish names of things all over my house. I found Spanish speaking pen pals online and communicated slowly by looking up words and plugging away at it for hours and hours, week after week, month after month. At the end of one year I had taught myself to speak, read and write Spanish somewhat fluently. I made friends in the Hispanic community. I'm 50 now and still use Spanish almost weekly here in rural Georgia. Learning a language was one of the best things I've ever done in life.
@@SourStrawberrys Yes. It completely changed my life. My favorite thing about Moses was not simp his talent for learning so many languages but his work ethic. Sort of like how you see that in athletes like Tom Brady, it’s the fact that he tirelessly works and commits himself and creates a structure and schedule, but at the same time doesn’t put pressure on himself. I watched Laoshu years ago before he passed and honestly his videos would bring tears to my eyes that connection is like no other. I'm learning Korean, and I realized off the bat I had to find a method that's good for me and follow a schedule and I use repetition until I understand. I can Read Hangul after 3 weeks, I personally want to nail down the grammar and just now getting into verbs and phrases, I understand their structures and meaning because for me working from ground up is my learning style, know all the rules and exception. Seeing this and remember Lashu is inspiring in time like this were I am looking for change to better my self in various ways.
Great video. And I like that comment you said at the end “are your actions at the level of your ambitions?” I never heard it put like that before, but that says it all. We all need to think about that when we are trying to accomplish anything.

At the time of this comment im only hallway through the video but damn man, im so upset i havent heard of Moses until now. Just through the clips, he seems like such a chill and humble dude. RIP Moses, and prayers to his family.
Didn't know he had passed. I used to be one of the people quite critical of his phrasebook approach, but in retrospect what he did was insanely impressive. He still spoke several languages to a genuinely "fluent" level which is more than most, much less his critics, can say about ourselves.

What a classy guy you are to present such a noble tribute to a fellow polyglot. Such tributes are so rare in this medium. Glad i found you and subscribed last week, Olly.
Like you Olly, I am about the same age as Moses. He was only a few months younger than me. The fact that he could pass away when he clearly was working so much harder than me to live a healthy lifestyle was shocking. I really need to turn things around. I really admire his language learning ethic. He clearly worked very, very hard and maintaining dozens and of languages even at an A1 or A2 level would be impossible for all but a select few (not including me) when I consider that each one has its own system of pronunciation and writing. And I also have great respect for your language learning career as well as the publishing empire you are building. 加油!
Rest in peace Moses. He inspired me to learn languages. He gave me hope that I can do it! It’s nothing more than wanting to and the discipline to stick to learning it.
His death really hit me hard, he's really inspired me to start languages every time I feel down I go and watch his videos, now I can speak English smoothly, also I'm learning japanes. Rest in peace Mosses🙏
20:22 "...and these are people that speak languages, that are very under-represented in the West, so you can imagine the joy that it must have brought someone who speaks Zulu or Lithuanian, to come across an American guy, in a supermarket, who has taken the time to learn their language, it is really something...." beautifully concluded and I think this is Moses's goal, may he rest in peace
My wife speaks 12 languages, grew up learning 3 simultaneously. A friend of ours managed 23, great to watch her tested by 7 girls all hitting her with rapid speech and she replied as fast to each of them. Africans are very adept at language learning.
I loved his videos. Even though he is gone his impact will continue to inspire people for as long as RUclips exists. It was a rush seeing people react to him speaking their languages. You could see how otherwise uncomfortable people would open up and the joy they had that someone was speaking too them in their native languages. He was a trailblazer in every sense. RUclips is useful in many ways and he exploited RUclips’s best attributes to bring his experience to the world. It’s a loss to humanity when someone like him leaves us. May he RIP.

@@TheGrmany69 tiene sentido. Aprendí más por escuchar y leer de lo que era posible por estudiar gramática, pero no le digo a nadie que deje de estudiar.
Es importante que uno aprenda los básicos.
How did I just learn about this guy? He is a goat! Learned French at 9, took Spanish in college. As an adult, I have been exposed to so many different languages! Currently learning mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, in addition with working in fluency in Spanish.
Side note- I know phrases in Russian, Tagalog, and Can recognize Portuguese, Hebrew, Italian, Swahili.
This guy is one of the dudes that inspired me to start learning mandarin chinese 2 month ago.
I'm already able to understand some of the simple conversations in the kind of reactions videos moses and others upload.
Great video Olly! Excellent tribute to an extraordinary and special person who left us far, far, too soon. Moses's great legacy will live on...
I was missing Moses again and I had the privilege of meeting him and friends on FB and such. I've seen all his videos but the way this video was put together it had hidden gems I don't think I've seen. It was excellent and one of the best tributes I have seen. Your content is outstanding. I'm subscribing.
I had no idea he died, such a sad passing so young. He has been an inspiration to me for years. Love you, Laoshu
I just found out today that he passed, I was blown, he made a lot of people happy by talking in their native language, he will e missed for sure.
Definitely was one of the language experts ever. He made it look super easy to follow along and he will be greatly missed.
This is definitely a gift. Still trying to master basic English even though I understand my native tongue. Damn its like a super power
You speak it pretty well
Yeah, Moses was a legend - (1981-2021) 😔
Great video. And I like that comment you said at the end “are your actions at the level of your ambitions?” I never heard it put like that before, but that says it all. We all need to think about that when we are trying to accomplish anything.
The man is definitely still inspiring bro. I'm about to cry at the end of this video because I know I won't ever get to meet him or see more of what he's got to offer. He's Inspired me to Learn more then just one language again. Thanks for making this video
Moses inspired and motiveted all of us... I've never seen a guy with such a curiosity and commitment towards languages like him. Rest in Peace
I just learnt that Moses has returned to the Creator.
He spoke my mother language at the beginning of this video.
He and I exchanged messages about Somali language in 2015.
He was utterly friendly and a quick learner.
Thanks for learning my language, brother Moses!
What
Extremely inspirational guy and this was a great video Olly honoring him and will bring more inspiration to others considering whether to keep or start learning languages.
He lived a half hour away from me. I could have possibly met him if I knew about him earlier. May he rest in peace.
I have mad respect for this man's dedication to learn multiple languages and how inspiring he has been to many of us! Thanks Moses! 🙏
Great Tribute mate. Shining the light on the benefits of learning languages. RIP 🐭
Damn I subbed to him recently after finding him through your vids a couple days ago. Sad to see he passed away. Rip
At the time of this comment im only hallway through the video but damn man, im so upset i havent heard of Moses until now. Just through the clips, he seems like such a chill and humble dude. RIP Moses, and prayers to his family.
Moses videos always brought smile to your no matter what kind of day you was having. Will be missed Rip Champ
I'm relatively new to this "polyglot stuff" and found humbling your tribute to Moses, thank you for making this so nicely. You gained my respect.
Thank you for remembering our big bro in language learning.
Thanks for paying tribute to Moses.
Didn't know he had passed. I used to be one of the people quite critical of his phrasebook approach, but in retrospect what he did was insanely impressive. He still spoke several languages to a genuinely "fluent" level which is more than most, much less his critics, can say about ourselves.
Sorry to hear about Moses, what an inspirational person! This is a great video and very helpful
Thank you for that nice tribute and all the great learning tips it had in it.
Thank you Sue!
Wow. What an amazing guy!! I'm so saddened that he passed away so young, he had so much to still give to the world.
He was a a beautiful human being. His channel got me through Covid. His interactions with all types of people shows how human beings really are one family. What a loss. Rest in peace good brother 🙏🏾🙏🏾😇
As a long follower of Mouse, you showed some footage I’ve actually never seen, and they were all great and informative clips. Appreciate your tribute.
Somali 🇸🇴, l'm really proud of you😎, legend, keep it up......
Bro big ups just earned a sub for this tribute 🔥 Laoshu was my favourite past time, enjoying his talks with all types of people to shop owners to fishermen, heaven has gained a amazing soul 🙌
Moses is a legend! What an inspiration! R.I.P.
I am a big fan of Moses and I am really impressed on the level he got in his best languages and the way he improvised. From Moses I got a lot of tricks how to get into contact with random strangers and how to start conversations. Thanks and RIP Moses
What a classy guy you are to present such a noble tribute to a fellow polyglot. Such tributes are so rare in this medium. Glad i found you and subscribed last week, Olly.
Great video man. RIP to the legend, the kobe of language learning. Truly inspiring
Glad you liked it 👍🏼
Love this video and totally agree with 6:58. Edit: Spectacular video, Olly. Thank you so much! 😍🤓
Never knew of him! Thank you so much! Definitely gained a new follower
He will live forever online. RIP. Great video Olly.
Thank you for the compliment!
So Amazing he will be missed. It’s painful too know he is gone.
@Olly Richards what a touching tribute. I never knew you were aware of his videos. I was shocked when I found it he died.
加油!
Thanks for your comment and for your support!
Thank you for this!!! Rest in Paradise Musa🙏🏼
Lovely video! Thanks for making it, Olly!
Thank you for the kind words
Great video Olly!
wow THANK YOU FOR THIS!!Now we know about Moses McCormick. Very interesting.
My wife speaks 12 languages, grew up learning 3 simultaneously. A friend of ours managed 23, great to watch her tested by 7 girls all hitting her with rapid speech and she replied as fast to each of them. Africans are very adept at language learning.
Can't believe he has passed, loved watching all his videos, thoughts with his loved ones, thanks for making the video man ✌👍
I had no idea he passed away until watching this video. This news actually pains my heart. ☹️
Same here. How did he die?
@@k.murray1074 Heart related. Heart attack maybe.
They said its was murder, go to his brothers channel.
@@LeahB31 he was murdered, his brother is investigating
I loved his videos. Even though he is gone his impact will continue to inspire people for as long as RUclips exists. It was a rush seeing people react to him speaking their languages. You could see how otherwise uncomfortable people would open up and the joy they had that someone was speaking too them in their native languages. He was a trailblazer in every sense. RUclips is useful in many ways and he exploited RUclips’s best attributes to bring his experience to the world. It’s a loss to humanity when someone like him leaves us. May he RIP.
