I love this man. Im grateful for all the drummers who graced Journey, but I love Deen the most. He is an Energizer bunny on drums. His gratitude and love for his Journey band members are his endearing qualities. When Pineda was ostracized when his brother was caught for drugs, Deen was there to support Pineda. His love for NS is always evident. I am happy he worked through his demons and came out better. His relationship with his son is also so beautiful. I love you, Deen. As a drummer and recovering addict myself...I relate so much to Deen's story and journey through trials of life. I've followed his downfalls and successes...never giving up on him. He's been, and continues to be an inspiration to so many. He's right,...when we don't put God first and think we're in control, things can go wrong (and usually do) fast! 1/23/13 I gave it all up, got completely sober and honest with myself...made amends where I could. Been deep diving into projects he's been involved in and hearing about his story. What an amazing, humble guy, and what a great story of redemption and restoration. There is always hope.

God Bless ya Deen. Just goes to show that musicians are simply 'everyday real ppl" with problems just like us. They are blessed to be in the situation they're in. Drugs, law & courts, ppl almost givin up on ya etc...We all fall no doubt, & I been in the same situation as him. Left my band & went into rehab without even telling em. Missed practices, had to cancel a gig & all! Showed up at rehearsals 2wks later & they were mad! Til they realized I did what I did to make me a better person, to be able to come back stronger. We musicians are connected in some cosmic way, & if we just tuff it out "together" we're better for it 👍

Just finished listening to this fantastic interview. I knew he"d be back sooner or later. Have been listening to that guy since the Matt McCourt days in the early-to-mid-80s. I don't know if the average Journey fan is aware of the degree to which Deen has influenced the direction of rock drumming over the years. Much like the legendary Steve Smith before him, a whole lot. And THEN there's that beautiful voice. Thanks again for this!
You can't say Neal is heartless. He really is faithful to his friends as you can see with Deen and Arnel . I think both of them probably had times they wanted to quit and I think Neal kept working on it and look at the results..
Kiki, isn't it interesting Deen, and Neal's son have played with Jonathan Cain at church? And Steve Perry's guitarist (Lincoln Brewster) is one of the biggest christian artists out there.
Saw them August 2021 at Jones beach on barrier island of Long Island NY as a Category 3 Hurricane was suppose to hit with in hours of concert due to weather Journey didn’t get on till about 12:25 am with Neal coming out to playing national anthem it was approaching 9/11 20 year mark. It was a special benefit concert for first responders. It was great to see 2 drummers and Deen officially back in band. I’m glad he beat the demon and is healing from self destruction the world needs people like him and def music industry does.

Deen is the real deal. Open and honest about his issues. A phenomenal drummer, and could be the lead singer of Journey if that's what he wanted.
