- The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a zoological park located southwest of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Cheyenne Mountain in the United States. At an elevation of 6,714 feet (2,046 m) above sea level, it is the highest zoo in America. The zoo covers 140 acres, 40 of which are in use. The zoo houses more than 750 animals, representing nearly 150 different species, with more than 30 endangered species.
Exhibits
African Rift Valley is an African savanna themed exhibit containing African crowned cranes, African lions, African spurred tortoises, cattle egrets, Colobus monkeys, Grant's zebra, griffon vultures, helmeted guineafowl, meerkats, okapis, red river hogs, reticulated giraffe, and rock hyrax. African Rift Valley cost $11 million to build.
Encounter Africa opened at a cost of $13.5 million. The Encounter Africa exhibit is home to African cape porcupines, African elephants, black rhinoceros, and meerkats. The exhibit received special recognition at the 2014 AZA Honors and Awards event.
Australia Walkabout: This exhibit contains a walk-through red-necked wallaby yard, a budgie aviary, emus, American alligators, shelducks, White's tree frogs, Matschie's tree kangaroo, and other species.
Scutes Family Gallery was originally built in the early 1940s and formally known as the Bird and Reptile House. It contains over 40 species of reptiles including Burmese pythons, lizards, snakes, tortoises and turtles. The name refers to the scutes, or scales that are on most reptiles. Funding for the renovation came from the $13.5 million campaign for the Encounter Africa exhibit.
Bear Grottos: Asiatic black and Spectacled bears.
The Loft: An educational exhibit building that houses American beavers, black-footed ferrets, chinchillas, eclectus parrots, lizards, prairie dogs, ravens, skunks, snakes, three-banded armadillos, tortoises, and Wyoming toads.
Monkey Pavilion: Originally opened in 1942 to house big cats, the building now exhibits smaller primate species including lar gibbons, white-cheeked gibbons, ring-tailed lemurs, Geoffroy's marmosets, Hoffman's two-toed sloths, black howler monkeys, black mangabeys, black and white ruffed lemurs, brown-nosed coatis, white-nosed coatis, Goeldi's monkeys, and Wolf's guenons. On 20 September 2020, the Zoo announced plans to demolish the pavilion.
Tapir Exhibit: A new tapir exhibit opened in 2015 after the zoo's mountain tapirs were living in an off-exhibit area since 2012 due to the construction of Encounter Africa. Cheyenne Mountain and the Los Angeles Zoo are the only two zoos in the United States to exhibit mountain tapirs.
My Big Backyard: Chickens, rabbits, koi, amphibians, tortoises, and invertebrates are exhibited here.
Asian Highlands exhibits Amur tigers, Amur leopards, snow leopards, and Pallas' cats in naturalistic habitats on the zoo's mountain side.
Rocky Mountain Wild: Costing the zoo $8.2 million, Rocky Mountain Wild houses bald eagles, Canadian lynx, Greenback cutthroat trout, Grizzly bears, Merganser ducks, Mexican wolves, moose, cougars, porcupines, river otters, rainbow trout, and Rio Grande turkeys.
Primate World: Primate World contains apes and other animals. Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, Western lowland gorillas, siamangs, and naked mole rats are exhibited.
Rocky Cliffs: Rocky Mountain goats.
Water's Edge: Africa: This new exhibit houses Nile hippopotamuses, African penguins, and other species. The exhibit opened in 2020.

@@noahroy7145 Yes the zoo was closed and the giraffes were inside for the night. She plans to return again. The entire trip was set up by members on their Facebook page. From the flight to the hotel and transportation.
I know that zoo has one of the largest tower of Giraffe. Would love to do a behind-the-scenes tour there.

Very cool! I really like the mountain Tapir and the mountain setting. Next time I'm in Colorado I'll definitely try to visit. The Reptile house exhibits were so unusual and I appreciate them for trying something more unique.
This zoo was gorgeous, the mountain setting created such unique habitats for the animals. I am all for trying a different approach to reptile habitats, first time seeing any such as these.
You should go to Reptile Gardens in Rapid City in the Black Hills

The bull giraffe's name is Khalid. He's the daddy to several G's that either live there, or have moved on. I believe the only one left at CMZ right now is Khalid's daughter, Viv.. BB (another daughter) just recently left and is now at Denver Zoo. Emy & Rae already left as well. Emy is at Peoria Zoo and Rae is at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. Penny, another daughter, died when she was around 2 months old. You probably saw her memorial statue over by the side yard where Khalid was. (Khalid has his own yard too on the other side of the giraffe barn)
The zoo certainly has a good heard of Giraffe. It's important to move them around to keep the animals healthy and prevent inbred young. Thanks for sharing those facts.
Khalid's only son, Kipawa, is at Columbus Zoo. And he and Bailey have another daughter now, she was born in October 2022. Her name is Wednesday because she was born on a Wednesday.
Awesome video, Tom!! I’ve been looking forward to this video ever since you’ve mentioned that you were going here. This is a beautiful zoo! It looks really nice for being built in the mountains! My favorite animal was the mountain tapir, that’s pretty cool. I also liked The Loft and the Birds & Reptiles building. It is a bummer that you didn’t get a hat. But at least you had one nonetheless. 😄 Excited for part 2 next week!!!
This was a beautiful zoo, they really used the Mountain for the habitats. The Mountain Tapir was awesome, the only one I've ever seen before. I'm hoping I can find a hat online from the zoo.

You get a great view of the mountain and surrounding area from the skyride. This was the first zoo I've seen that has the animals names listed. 😊
@@TomsRoadTrippin A few Zoos you`ve been to before had a few of the animal`s names listed on the habitats in the past. The Austin Zoo was a rescue Zoo and pretty much every habitat had the names of the animals as well as their story explaining how they got to the Zoo. Thought i`d refresh your memory if you will, my memory is rather good, not to flex or anything 😂.

Hello Norbert, this was the first time seeing the Mountain Tapir. One of the few zoo's that have them on display.
@@TomsRoadTrippin In fact, one of only 2 Zoos in the US to have them. The other being the Los Angeles Zoo, they have 5 and this Zoo has 2 (from what i`ve found online).

Sorry for the late comment, I had trouble finding time to watch (and read the signage) between work and hanging out with friends (mainly Anna, who’s fast becoming one of the people that I trust most and we’re getting to a good point in our friendship if you catch my drift Tom, very nice girl) She’s not two-faced and keeps our conversations between us two, gives me great advice, she’s very nice and what I think of when I think the words: best friend or even girlfriend, which we’re seek to start a relationship in the future sometime as I’ve told you, Tom.
This was a great video Tom, I’ll admit it, I don’t like when you release two-parters, however, that being said, I do understand why you do them. Because the views tend to drop if the video is significantly over an hour. Personally, I would watch it without a second thought but not everyone praises you as highly as I do, not many understand you the way I do if you know what I mean. Me and you, we’re alike. Before I continue my comment, remember a while back when I linked a few Bigfoot movies? Firstly: Did you get the chance to watch them? Secondly: I have a few more to offer, one being a documentary.
I’ve got a bit of a different question for you Tom. What do you know about phones? I ask this because my texting and calling hasn’t been working, whenever I try to call people, it says call failed and whenever people call me, they say it goes straight to voicemail. My step dad is good with electronics, he couldn’t figure it out. I decided to ask you to see what you could bring to the table, Tom. I may ask my dad to take it in somewhere, maybe it has a virus from somewhere, no idea why my phone is acting up and it’s beginning to get to me. I only just got this phone in December.
This Zoo was amazing, I love how they used to mountainous terrain to their advantage in most of the habitats. A very good example of this is the tiger habitat, I’ll have a time stamp for Chewy the tiger later.
Everything about this Zoo shows that they care about their animals, wonderful Zoo. Great variety of animals.

3:40: You are right Tom. Hey down there bud!
7:08: The amount of that UGLYA$$ SH*T I see each year is nuts. Tons and tons and oh yeah, tons of it. The roads themselves are hidden beneath about 3-5 feet of snow & ice, if not more. -40 sometimes even -50, blizzards, can’t see 3 feet in front of you. Cold enough to mess with the power, make the lights flicker and go out. The highways are an absolute nightmare in the winter (which btw, lasts about 8 months here, sometimes we get snow as early as September-November but my hometown has gotten it in every month of the year, years before.) Transport trucks in the ditches, cops securing the scene, tire marks in the snow. Winter in Canada (particularly my region) is a ravaging force of nature, some people lose their lives, be it the cold itself or the highway, my own uncle lost his life while in his way home from work. His friend driving, my uncle was in the passenger seat. The roads were icy that day, the car lost control and skidded into the side of a transport truck, my uncle’s side had direct impact with the transport truck, killing him instantly and his friend instantly. I was only 2, the only one of my siblings to exist, although my mom was heavily pregnant with my brother. Uncle Patt spent a lot of time with me before the accident, now all I have is blurry memories and pictures. I have a photo of him on my dresser and I get a little sad when I look at it. Once, I got bullied heavily at school, my skin was cut, deaf in one ear (the result of them punching it and yelling in my ear repeatedly) and a black eye. I picked up the photo and put my bruised hand on his face. I whispered: You would’ve put him in his place Uncle Patt. Then I briefly remember putting the photo back in the dresser and gripping my dresser for support, I started to cry, my wounds were weakening me. I grunted in pain, my legs gave out. My vision went blurry, then black. I woke up in my bed sometime later. Bullying sucks Tom, I was 13 in that incident. All my life, I’ve been the nerd, the shy guy with not many friends and the ones I do have are mostly girls because I’m not as rough and tumble as the other boys, I don’t get along with them. For years, I was called a monster, a freak, an outcast. One girl came up to me in 8th grade and said: No girl is gonna want you, freak. We’ll look at me now, talking to a girl that I like and she likes me.😁. I also had rumours spread about me, pinned against the lockers in the hallway, threatened, had my face cut, I still have the scars to this day, and although faint, it’s a reminder of where I’ve come from and how I’ve grown. Thankfully, after the 9th grade, I have t been bullied. Feel free to comment on this in your reply. Tom, I miss my uncle very much. I watched cars for the very first time with him. I put my Lightning McQueen car on his grave, at the time I thought I was putting it on his bed (I was maybe 4-5 years old), back then I didn’t understand why my mother and grandmother were crying behind me…*Wipes away tears** Alright, enough of this Tom, moving on.

16:01: He’s a very handsome guy! Quite a big bull. This Zoo has a very large tower of giraffe (group of giraffe), Tom. Quite impressive. Imagine all the food this tower goes through in a day 🤯!
16:32: Cool bit of info for you Tom: this hog is a male. You can tell by the warts and bumps and tusks on his snout. Females have smaller, less noticeable warts and bumps, their tusks are smaller. This species mostly uses the tusks to dig up roots but they make good weapons on two angry males. Te tusks can grow quite large/long.
16:56: Once again, you can tell this guy is a male because of his horns, actually the correct term is ossicones, on his head. Unlike giraffes, only the males of this species have these. In giraffes, both sexes have these but male’s are typically larger. I know you enjoy when I include animal facts Tom, as you should know my now, I know a lot of them. This fact, I’ve known for months and actually learned from a sign in one of your Zoo videos. The first ever video I ever watched from you was Baton Rouge Zoo, I was looking for a Zoo Tour to watch and this was from a creator I’ve never heard of before, you! Little did I know what was about to happen, how I would grow to care about your well-being, much like a family member, because that’s how I see you, an online family member.And the first video I commented on was Cincinnati Zoo. 17:26: African version of Prairie Dogs! Meerkats are cute, very curious creatures. Their social structure has always intrigued me.

29:11: In a pond beside my grandparents house (same area as my Bigfoot encounters), there was a beaver and I thought it was so cool Tom! This was a number of years ago now Tom. I used to watch her for hours. We affectionately called her Wally. I’m sure I have pictures on of her on my laptop somewhere.
30:36: Chinchillas are adorable, a friend of my grandparents used to breed these and other animals like chickens and various kinds of cattle and alpaca etc… They had a vast area of chinchillas, lots of different colours. But my favourite was the only black one, his name was Shadow, he was awesome. Came right up to eat out of my hand, Shadow was cool 😎.

33:20: I see these guys a lot here, mostly when I work late at work, in order to get home, we have to drive on a road through the middle of the woods and since it’s dark out, moose come out more around that time. Can be dangerous if you’re not careful, don’t kiss off an adult moose, cow or bull. Saw a big bull the other night on the way home, he was on the side of the road, big antlers on him. It’s truly a gift to see animals like moose, even more so if you’re lucky enough to see a white one, I’ve seen those many times. I’m thankful to live somewhere with such cool wildlife!

36:42: Not relavent to anything but my dad, Pepere and my other Pepere work in mines. My dad and his dad work at the same one and my other grandfather works at one out of town a week at a time. Very dangerous job, one wrong move and you’re done for. My dad has shown me videos of his blasting rocks apart and it’s scary! But Papa must be doing something right because he recently got promoted to a backup boss. The usual boss is out of work because of surgery so now is Papa’s time to shine!

Last night, I had a Bigfoot movie night with my grandparents. We watched: I don’t remember the name but my grandfather found and recorded a program discussing the existence of Bigfoot, Exists, Big Legend, Bigfoot: The Legend Of Sasquatch. We didn’t have time for Abominable unfortunately, great movie that is. On our last movie night, we did Hunting Grounds which is one of my favourite Bigfoot movies. All movies mentioned here, I’ve shared with you. I’ve watched probably in between 40-50 Bigfoot movies. Most of them impressed me, others were so cringy lol. I’ll continue to share the good ones with you. Have you ever had a Bigfoot experience or heard something strange in the night?
One more question: The signage at Zoos & Aquariums, do you read them or do you find it takes too much time so you just read them while editing? I’ve wanted to ask for a while, just kept forgetting and was like: Ok I’ll ask next week, next week, next week…
And it took 2 hours to copy all that from my laptop, if RUclips would work, I wouldn’t have this issue, a little frustrating lol. I was honestly blown away by this zoo. Such a beautiful location for a zoo, and they really utilized the terrain for the habitats.
Even though the skylift wasn't very exciting, it was enjoyable. Got a nice view of the Mountains and the goat's going up.

I used to get scared of heights when I was younger, I've overcame my fears, little by little. I started going on scary high rides, after awhile I started enjoying it more.
This zoo has one of the largest tower of Giraffe in the world. Very spacious habitat with lots of viewing area's. Plus feeding all the hungry giraffe was lots of fun 😁
Red River Hogs are my favorite type of pigs.
I'm happy to hear you have learned stuff from my zoo tour's. Once I heard a lot of people like to read the sign about the animals, I do my best to include them. Many of my new subscribers mention how much they enjoyed one of my tour's and are surprised at how many zoo's I've visited.
Meerkat are soooo cute, I love watching them running around or just lounging on the ground. There is always the one lookout.
If a zoo has a refillable souvenir cup I'll buy one if it's not way overpriced. I typically refill it throughout the day, lots if walking in the heat makes me thirsty. I have about 50+ souvenir cups from all my travels. I set-up shelves on one of my walls that I have them on. Although most of the walls are filled with hats, lots and lots of hats. 😀
Darn zebras, I swear it seems like they hear about my visit ahead of time and wait for me to start filming..
One of the best parts of this zoo is the different elevation changes. Makes for some great views of the animals.
The Lowland Gorillas are amazing animals, I tend to really enjoy them. Especially the youngsters, they run around annoying the grown-ups 🤣
Where else would I get the chance to ask a meerkat that question?
That element got a good running start to make it up the incline. They get good exercise in that habitat.
I didn't think the rhinoceros was outside until I finally spotted him. Such magnificent animals.
The Mountain Tapir was such a nice looking animal. The only zoo in the United States to have them on habitat, another nice thing about the Cayenne Mountain Zoo.
My camera work has vastly improved over the years if doing this. I try to get the best shots to really show the surroundings.
The bears habitat was fantastic, two different area's for the bear to enjoy.
Imagine how many fruits and vegetables this zoo goes through each day. Growing their own crops is really important.
Don't forget Noah, Breakfast is the most important meal if the day, even for snakes.
Too bad Atka was laying down as moose are such beautiful and large animals. That's fool you see them near where you live.
The fire tower had some good reading, fire's aren't always bad, this explains it very well.

The zoo did a fantastic job at distinguishing the different area's from each other.
I absolutely loved Chewy's habitat, such magnificent animals. It sucks so much that humans are killing this species in the wild.
I really enjoyed the reptile building, very interesting habitats. Lots if lovely snakes and lizards.
The wallaby we're great, lots of up-close views of them too. The whole area was accessible to the wallaby, most we're right along the pathway. I see you liked my red neck joke 🤣
If the sign isn't too long I try to read them but, most of the time, I just try to film it and read it later. Depending on the size of the zoo, I don't have lots of time to read everything in real time. Honestly, filming can take away from the experience sometimes. I'm so focused on filming everything I can forget to just enjoy the experience. Knowing how much so many people enjoy all of my hard work makes doing this so worthwhile. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this zoo, it really was an amazing place. 😊
