The greatest singers I find are ones that aren't just telling a story, they're acting as though they are genuinely in the situation described in the song. Amy Winehouse in Back to Black sounds like she's really genuinely heartbroken by her boyfriend leaving her (probably *was* the truth in that case). Michael Jackson in Smooth Criminal sounds distressed at Annie's violent demise. Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence feels like a prophetic warning, while Disturbed's take feels like building anger over the message being ignored.

Spot on. Focus on guitar variation in song, ie. clean, distorted, acoustic, etc...and different techniques like tapping, chugging, etc. are all over music. Most songs don't apply this to vocals though. Very sterile. Amy was a master at this. I also feel like, unfortunately, many of the truly great ones have a lot of painful shit going on so they emote more with lyrics that are super meaningful to them. Great stuff as always, Chris.
I used to always hear teachers at music college recite the mantra "don't try to hit the notes, speak the lyrics and your voice will warm to match the vocal" but your explanation is so much more of an exposition on that idea ... Speaking the vocal is like a go to for a karaoke track in a crowded bar lol
For me there’s a lot to unpack here. I’m primarily a guitarist so things come from that arena. So I first think of a guitar lesson I once saw about not being a “defensive” guitarist. Playing it safe. Hitting the notes but that’s it. Ironically, I think I’m not brilliant enough that I need to sing full otherwise it isn’t believable. If I half sing it sounds goofy. Which is to my second thought when I sing “sing it like I wrote it”. It’s a squishy thought but it helps me bring the right energy. And finally I guess one thing I get again and again is singing apart from the studio version. I love Paul McCartney and Billy Joel but they can be out of my range (chest voIce to chest voice for example) so singing without it helps me find myself in it. I could keep talking, got a ton from your tips. Much loved!
When you mentioned nasality, I couldn't think of anyone else but Dave Mustaine's live performances, and Alice in Chains' recordings. They're very nasal, but it fits what they sing. And I've come to realize after the first few videos of your course that I can sing their stuff much easier than just trying to push my falsetto with chest voice. Great videos, man! Chris your videos always give me new ideas and a few weeks ago I had a light bulb moment and so far I've been doing the yodel thing more, it's been making hitting notes and having more control over notes and things way easier. 🤘you rock Chris. You have an interesting way of finding videos to make, your always coming out with great videos man.
Exactly my issue!!!!. I can't wait to listen. I look at it, I dont have a tambre that's exciting. I can sing 3 octaves as a male. And on key, but ....meh. so all that power and range buy its just dull to me. Idk

I always think about Chino Moreno, when I think about dynamics, cause he's (to me) one of the singers who make something unique. And it always amazes me how he can flow through the notes (like he never stops on one note, touch it and go to the next one), and then just go two octaves up, and his approach in singing sounds so special. By the way, I really love every video of yours about Chester Bennington, cause I'm a fan too) And I would love to see your thoughts about any song from Dead By Sunrise. Vocals there are incredible!

Very good videos. You make it easy for non-experts to understand. Since you did the analysis of Julian Casablancas on two albums I would like to see you analyze him on the "First Impressions Of Earth" album as he has a very interesting way of singing there.

The problem I have with this is that even THIS is very hard for us to do! Also, our vocal technique goes completely out the window and we hurt ourselves. Because we're concentrating on something else.
If you listen to your body, you may run up against discomfort and have to 'reset' and budget your vocal energy, but you won't hurt or do any damage to your voice unless you ignore symptoms and press into pain, which you should never do. But in order to find victory, you need to brush up against things that feel wrong so that you can feel what is right. In this way of looking at discovery, technique is not going out the window at all. It is front and center as you're exploring tonal and dynamic possibilities!
In Amy's case, it's both, and in most cases with the singers we love it's the dynamic switching back and forth between twang and direct nasal pass through that we can have full control over our tone!
