Thanks for doing what you do, I'm a big fan! My question is: Do you ever struggle with going from a sketch to a final painting? How do you overcome that middle area where it sometimes feels like you're messing it all up? That happens to me so often that I usually just restart the image over and over again
I am a digital sculptor and 3d modeler and I feel offended :) Not really, but sculpting comes with the trade off that you need to make your model look good or "finished" from every imaginable angle. It gives you form and perspective for free of course. But I would argue that the understanding of the subject and the needed depth of digesting it's interpretation goes just as deep as with drawing or painting. I still agree that learning about drawing is essential and very helpfull for every visual art form. To the question about design I would add Composition and Design elements and principles to this as well, such as rythm, dominance, small, medium, big and such, which I think are not necessarily discovered by just drawing and are simply knowledge to be gained, before they can be transfomed into feeling and subconsciousness. Though everything in reality is designed in some way and we can learn from this, I think it is not always neccessarily an appealing design. Some of it is just pure functional and boring and I leanred that it is the artists job to enhance reality, which I think is true. I encounter this often in 3d art, where people make an exact copy of an everyday object and perfect it to look the same as reality, but with no design in it whatsoever, forgetting to make it into art that leads the eye around, tell some kind of story or simply exaggerating what they wanna say about the subject. Nice Q&A! Alien Invasion question was one of my favs.
would you be ofended if someone (in case me) did a sculpture based on your work A Hero of Ages? I love that drawing, and since I'm learning ZBrush I figure it would be nice to explore some of the pictoric shapes you use in that one. I love the theme too. Anyways, I'm sorry if it bothers you, and if you do not give me your permission I will not go forward with it. Thanks Steven!
Thank you for sharing this wise, sincere, poetic, and entertaining stuff!
