  • Folding bikes are great to travel with if you can fit them in a normal suitcase. This is a Tern Link D8 folding bike that I fit in a standard 31" Samsonite Flight suitcase. Posted by www.thereluctantcyclist.com

    Thanks for an nice and informative video :-)
    But as someone mentioned in another comment: "Put some bubble wrap / foam to protect the frame / components"
    I think this is mandatory and of outmost importance, according to my expirence from work, so the parts cannot move around inside the hard suitcase, to be sure your bike will survive every trip, without scratches and bending something. Be sure your suitcase will be thrown and dropped e.g. from an carrige, by mistake from time to time. Kind regards :-)

    that bike is so shiny! very good tips here.. excellent presentation. these bikes can be broken down much smaller to fit IATA regulation for check in baggage -23kg, sum of width,height, depth must be no more than 158cm - no need for a suitcase, just wrap it in a tarp, tent or sleeping bag and use packaging tape!

      I beg to differ. My D8 was so roughly handled in transport that the crank was bent and hit the frame. Since then I align it with the frame, strap it tight there, and put old inner tubes in between to avoid it ever getting bent again. Besides, as I am air crew I am not allowed to take loose wrapped items. I may only use crew suitcases issued by my employer. I manage to fit a D8 in a smaller suitcase than the one in this video, without takingthe derailleur off.

      @@TribusMontibus I take crank off these days and derailleur,. still I pack it in a tarpaulin and pack sleeping bag and tent around it. Got a few vids of the process on my channel. The bag throwers can give packages like this hell, maybe I've been lucky!

    Thank you, great video. I have traveled for over 20 years on many flights with my bikes. I have one bike with the S&S coupling and I also own a Bike Friday. My Bike Friday uses the same case or similar to the one on your video. Similar ways to place the bike into the case. I also own a Tern but a C7. Your video will help if I ever do travel with my Tern C7.

    Thanks for this video. Do you have a video recommendation for assemble the bike after the travel? I mean, I have the bike on my suitcase but now I do not know how to "make" it again :(

    Does this suitcase exceed the standard linear 60" (length plus width plus height) to avoid oversize baggage fees on almost every airline? I'd like to fly with my bike, but don't want to pay $150 each way. Thanks very much.

    your tires will not burst. Even in a perfect vacuum, the pressure difference from sea level is only 14.696 psi.

      no but airlnes require it

    Very helpful video explanation -- thank you! A minor correction -- at ~3:30 you reference turning the handlebar to re-orient the "gear shifters" -- I think you intended to say "brake levers." I have placed an order for a similar suitcase to accommodate an REI Novara Flyby folding bike (also manufactured by Tern, I believe).

    I thought folding bikes should come with its own bag to quickly fold , put in, and go

    If you check in a bag and it gets lost they will reimburse the cost of a lost luggage piece not the cost of a bike. I am looking into traveling with a folding but if I spend $1500 I think I will check it as a bike.

    Thank you! I have the same bike model and was wondering if the airporter suitcase was really necessary. Will try this for sure on my next travel :D

    This will not be charge as long as it's within the allowable size and weight of the check in luggage right?

  • @ninetyminutestd

    Even though it's a hardshell case, the case flexes a bit right? Any worries about lots of weight stacked on top of the case by handlers? Do you wrap the bike up in towels or bubble wrap for extra protection? Thanks. Traveling next week and hoping to bring new folding bike.

      we flew from Cincinnati to Portland and the bikes did fine. I put a cloth between the wheel and frame the bike where it folded so it didn't scratch the frame. If you're concerned you could go to a bike store and get the spacers for the fork and the axle protectors that they ship new bikes with and use those but we had no problems with the case. Extra Protection can never hurt so if you feel more confident putting something between the case and the bike by all means do it

    • @ThereluctantcyclistJC
      @ThereluctantcyclistJC  3 года назад +1

      It worked well for us. You should be able to get the specifications of your folded Bike to see if it would fit in the dimensions of the suitcase. It is definitely a sturdy and large suitcase.

    Nice tip but too cumbersome and so much hassle. With a brompton, you dont have to remove anything. Just fold it and it will fit to any 32" suitcase no problem.

    • @TribusMontibus
      @TribusMontibus Год назад +1

      Yes, but a Brompton won't perform like a Tern D8. I rode my D8 on mountain paths, north of Kigali Rwanda today and even made it into the Strava top 10 on a few climbs where all the other top 10 performances were done using mountain bikes. No way I could have done that on a Brompton.

    I am planning to bring a folding bike to Japan for a leisure bike exploration. Is this piece of luggage a little too big for standard check in?

    • @ThereluctantcyclistJC

      This luggage can be used for standard check-in. That was why I purchased it. Have fun in Japan.

    Why not just get a bigger suit case? Your traveling by train I presume? The whole bike, and all your tools will fit into a suit case and you could use it as a holding on top of the bike when riding? 😂
