In American slavery they twisted the Bible to harm the Africans. As if, back in the day every African was living like Wakanda in royalty and robes. The reality is a lot of tribal African spirituality was dark, evil and twisted. For example, my family's Nigerian. People don't know that many Nigerian spiritualists used to see twins as evil. So it was a common practice to take twins from birth and kill them, throw them in bushes or deprive them of any breastfeeding. In fact, it's still happening today. And believe it or not but it was CHRISTIANS who came and tried to put a stop to it (Google search Mary Slessor). The reality is any spirituality that isn't of Christ is evil. And just because Beyonce makes it look like a vibe on stage and in an album, doesn't mean we should be deceived. Glad JHP is boldly speaking against it and no longer being defensive, cos trust me we Africans been knowing

"We want so bad not to be legalistic that we actually become profane." Man that is FIRE. I'm sure that issue resonates with a lot of modern Christians. It's HARD to rightly divide the word and separate yourself from what is non-biblical religious doctrine while still maintaining the core of what it actually means to follow Christ. A lot of people would rather just lean one way or another and let their denomination or church or pastor do the thinking for them rather than seeking the truth themselves. It's GOOD to question what you're being taught, but when you arrive at beliefs that aren't rooted in scripture or contrary to it like a lot of churches have, you have gone off in the weeds. Heck, Islam is an entire global religion based on one guy having gone so far off in the weeds.

They each preached every Sunday morning and evening. One would preach the morning sermon and the other the evening they would change each week. Myself and my siblings would be asked who was preaching the sermon at every service. They were also responsible for different areas of ministry and did some things together. My mom was the first Canadian married woman officer to be appointed to her position separate from her husband. It used to be that the man was appointed and the woman went with him. The head of the Salvation Army in Canada asked my mother to turn her hobby into an official appointment. She said yes as long as she was appointed to her own appointment separate from dad’s and that any married woman officer was also appointed separately to her appointment. We have to acknowledge and address that before we just accuse Black Americans of being "race idolators". Once we acknowledge that what was done to our ancestors was a perverted form and not true Christianity, along with having some historical insight, we can begin to help remove that stumbling block.

@Momo Fuku Doodoo Windu How was Christianity weaponized against black people? The list is very long. Slave masters used Christianity to justify slavery with the curse of Ham, Ephesians 6:5-7, and several other passages. They also created a "Slave Bible" that removed the book of Exodus among other things. They used Christianity to "civilize" us both in the America's and on the African content, but instead of making us more like Jesus, they encouraged us to be more like themselves, giving us European names, dress in European clothing, and demonizing all of our African features. These are just some examples, there are more. But overall as believers, if we want to effectively evangelize to people struggling with "Christianity being the white man's religion" we can't ignore, dismiss, or make excuses for these things.
