@@thebrummierailenthusiasts5329 I myself was 20 years old when I heard this song Isaac Hayes took his grandmother to the academy awards when he won it was sweet to see that❤
This song takes back to early October of '71. I was a young 13yr old in my first year of Jr Hi School at McClure and what I ENJOYED was Baseball. It was the fall classic. The World Series, the heavily favorite Baltimore Orioles that had pitching staff of FOUR 20 game WINNERS, Jim Palmer Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, and Pat Dopson....In today's game that will NEVER EVER happen again...The Pittsburgh Pirates came in with the BIG BATS. League leading hitter Willie Stargell who led both the NL & AL with 48 homers, Bob Robertson who destroyed the SF Giants with his bat in the NLC, their entire lineup was DANGEROUS for ANY opposing team etc...However, the STAR of the series.....none other than Roberto Clemente, "Mr Humanitarian" of baseball. He put on a clinic of how to play and EXECUTE all the basic FUNDAMENTALS of the game of baseball. Roberto Clemente would go on to lead the Pirates to victory, thus becoming the MVP. As for Isaac Hayes and Richard Roundtree, both album and the movie "Shaft" were their FINEST performances...R.I.P. Many of the players of the Pirates and Orioles have since passed away as well, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell Bruce Kison, Danny Murtaugh, Earl Weaver, Frank and Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair, Elrod Hendricks, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar and Mark Belanger....R.I.P.
I used this song for a baton twirling talent contest for my debutante ball when I was in high school in 1972; I believe. I started off with two batons for the introduction and broke off into one baton for the rest of the song. I was awarded second place for the actual talent contest where the three winners were asked to perform at the ball. Once the performances were over, everyone at the ball including the parents said that I should have taken first place. It was kind of a political thing why I didn't win. No matter, I got all the accolades of being the first place winner from everyone at the ball including getting a four-year book scholarship for college by placing second. My mother was so proud. I'll never forget this song for that baton twirling routine as well as the movie that it was created for by Issac Hayes.
GREAT music and lyrics... RIP At one famous moment, Hayes calls Shaft "a bad mother-;" before the backup singers (one of whom is Tony Orlando and Dawn's Telma Hopkins) interrupt the implied profanity with the line "Shut yo' mouth!" Hayes immediately defends himself by replying "I'm talking about Shaft", with the back-up vocalists replying, "We can dig it." Other well-known passages include "You're damn right!" also uttered by Hayes, and "He's a complicated man/but no one understands him/but his woman/John Shaft."... It seems like there is multiple versions of this song, the one I kept finding was faster than this one and didn’t sound right to me. Had to keep searching to find this one! Beautiful
I remember him in leather and chains doing this at the awards ceremony. Nontraditional attire, and there he was playing and singing. And when he won he told us it was really for his grandma who loved him and directed him toward this achievement/ Do any of you remember? I'm thinking she may have been a little old lady in the audience, smiling, so proud of her boy. (Or maybe I'm imagining her at home smiling.) I've been enjoying Shaft all these decades!
Isaac Hayes 🎵Who's the black private detective That's a sex machine to all the chicks? (Shaft) You're darn right🎵 🎵Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother, man? (Shaft) Can ya dig it?🎵 🎵Who's the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about? (Shaft) Right on You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother (Hush your mouth) But I'm talkin' about Shaft (Then we can dig it) He's a complicated man but no one understands him but his woman (John Shaft)🎵
