2024! This symphony was one of if not best orchestrations of modern music of the last century! Excellence! Three percussionists needed on three sets of drums, plus brass, keyboards, strings, guitars, woodwinds, special effects, vocals, etc.! A powerhouse! Thank you, Isaac Hayes!
1972, I was a senior in high school when this hit the AM airwaves (no such thing as FM at that time in our area). 52+ years later, I am continually blown away every time I hear this. Then many years later my kids discovered Isaac Hayes as "Chef" on South Park. I got out my old vinyl 33's and schooled my teenagers. Caught them totally off guard. New Isaac fans!
I wonder if the people on the other side of that glass know at the time they were there that they were witnessing a special composer and hearing one of the most iconic songs of not only that era but of all time
Its not Shaft. I am a musician and I spotted it as soon as I saw the drummer doing rim shots at the beginning of the song. Its 16th notes on the hi hat. Fooled you.
Really because I think the this music is reflective of the time it was made not ahead of it not behind it just perfect for the time if it's still great that makes it timeless not ahead of its time
The entire soundtrack from the movie "Shaft", starring "Richard Roundtree", remains a Great Musical Treasure. ♥️ Thanks to all those talented musicians who were a part of that project too, Rest Well Issac Hayes ♥️
Richard Roundtree *was,* and *still is* Shaft. Samuel L. Jackson comes a close second. At least Roundtree made his two appearances in both the 2000 and 2019 reboots.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING…. I haven’t heard this reproduced exactly, close but not exact. Rest in peace Isaac Hayes (black Moses) and now Richard Roundtree aka SHAFT
Black american culture is U.S. culture. The music from the 40's to current day. Food, dance, speech not to mention all the inventions that we made that were stolen or discredited from us. From traffic lights to peanut butter. This music will never be duplicated, it drips unadulterated soul from every note. America takes us for granted. Let's not forget, The Beatles got off their plane looking for Muddy Waters, not Elvis. And let's not forget all the influences Elvis got from Black American blues. Fast forward, Daft Punk's "one more time" came from a sample of Eddie John, a Black American.
What Genius this man was for putting this Music together!!!! Todays young ones would not understand this Great peice of Insrumental Masterpiece..70s music were something else ...wish we could turn back time ..i would appreciate what we had more !!!! XX
This song was played and played and played when we it first came out.Everywhere we frequent Shaft was the sound, clubs, parties, walking around or just hanging out,Shaft was the jam and then"Black Moses"became Issac Hayes name, because he enlighten our spirit with many more beautiful soul sounds. He brought us to a whole new outlook in music, plus the many other great musical pros throughout the 70's.
This has to be the coolest theme tune to a film EVER!!! Isaac Hayes...musical genius...LOVE watching him conduct the instrumentalists in the studio....freekin fantastic!!! I would of LOVED to of been one the people dancing in the background..just to of been a part of this....WOW!!!!! I CAN DEFINITELY DIG IT!!!
He’s got to be the coolest conductor I’ve ever seen! It’s such an iconic piece of music! I love how there’s bits of everything in this , there’s brass, there’s percussion, there’s strings - it’s a masterpiece!
Why yes sir.. Yes he did. #SkipPitts is a legend in his own right as one of the founding Godfather's of the Memphis Sound. He was featured on many platinum and gold records with icons of early R&B, Soul and Funk. His appearance in the excellent Music documentary #TAKEMETOTHERIVER is a BLAST 🚀
Remember when this came out as a kid, definitely the baddest tune out at the time. Couldn’t get enough, played the vinyl over and over. This is obviously a sync of the video with the final recording as Hayes is seen conducting the instrumentation and hasn’t laid the vocals yet. Unforgettable classic.
This is what I call a true music genius virtuoso, taking control and making a song come to life. "Theme For Shaft" is still relevant today in modern music. Respect to "Black Moses"!
Black Moses and Barry White were marvellous when they visited Ghana in 1991. I attended the show at the National theater, Accra. When he sang "I stand accused" the deliriously happy audience went "wild" 😂 Magnificent love piece!
Isaac Hayes, a very gifted iconic figure in the history of black music of the 1970s, music period. The whole world embraces this song created in this studio on this video!
Because its timeless. My dad used to work as a high speed tape duplicator at a music studio in 70's NYC. He told me stories about how much cocaine he found on the boards and chairs after one of Isaac's sessions (and others). Music like this will never be made again, when you listen to this your listening to the essence of an era. One that's better than the current day, and cannot be duplicated.
I met the man ( Mr. Isaac Hayes in NYC ). He was really as Cool as: the-other-side-of-the-pillow ( in real life ). R.I.P. This Song is an absolute Masterpiece. As a guitar player & producer, that is some Funky-ass Wah-wah guitar playing.
Melvin Pruitt - you may laugh your ass off after I say this but I've always thought rapper Rick Ross could pass for a decently convincingly looking Isaac Hayes look-a-like.
I AM SO SO SO SO HAPPY. RIP MR ISSAC HAYES. 💛🧡💚 WHAT A MASTERPIECE. THEY ARE ALL ENJOYING THEMSELVES IN THAT VIDEO. WELL DONE 👍🏿 TO WHOEVER UPLOADED THE VIDEO 👍🏽👍🏾👍🏼
Wow... this gives me chills just to think I grow up to this beautiful era of music when the music industry wasn't money driven and pure talent reign supreme. Isaac Hayes one of many Musical Giants from the 70s.

Isaac Hayes. One of the best composers ever. He grew up in Memphis Tennessee. Went to Manassas high school with my mom and her siblings. He was best friends with my uncle. I asked my mom did you know he was gonna be what he became. She remembered him playing the sax in high school, but nothing to indicate his stellar career. He was known as bubba back then. I met is mom and sister, at his moms house. I was probably 8 years old. Towards the end of his life my uncle ran into him again in Vegas, and they got caught up. Kinda sad they all died within 2 years of each other. first my mom, them my uncle, then Bubba. What a cool guy he was. Such an innovator.
The team for Shaft by Isaac Hayes is a masterpiece which reverberates the 1970's whenever I listen to it. My highest respect & appreciation to performing band.

I'm not surprised isaacs Hayes won an Oscar for this pure gem .....just brilliant......
And if that wasn't enough then he became a top character on the South Park cartoon show.
