      It's called an Ebow...pretty cool effect that vibrates the string constantly.

      Basically, an ebow uses electromagnetism to make the string vibrate. That's the gray gizmo in his hand. It's powered by a 9-volt battery. Combine this with some pedals and you can achieve some very synth sounds.
