the fact you are on your second speaks volumes...... You EV owners are evangelical to the point of being deranged. They have to try and justify what is turning out to be a terrible buying decision - worse for the environment, more expensive, horrific depreciation, short life span ,limited range and more expensive to charge than petrol if using public chargers .

I am actually shocked that more sports car manufacturers have not STARTED their electric car journey with a "next generation" version of an icon - GM with the Corvette, Jaguar with an XK, Nissan with a Z, Ford with the Mustang, Mazda with the Miata and even Porsche with a 9XX. I think the MG is brilliant. I also think the Tesla and the MG are competitors as they are aiming at totally different customers - People who can afford something like an Aston Martin aren't considering a Miata and vice versa.

Good review. The Tesla roadster is still a bargain compared to other true supercars, which they have strategically delayed to ramp up production of the cheaper Tesla and the Cybertruck. But for a bargain sports car, the MG ticks a lot of boxes, but the 200 kWh battery is just stupid, it could be $10k cheaper and probably much better performance at 100 kWh or less with dual motor. Our 2018 model 3 has 78 kWh, goes 300 mi, and does 0-60 mph in 4.2 sec. As long as the MG (which should be lighter) can get 400 km it should be fine. This car likely filling the EV version of the Miata or Honda S small cheap sports cars. I don't like the name Cyberster, sounds like a rip-off of the Cybertruck, how about the MGC?

I think the next product will be the ≈ $25,000 car design process on the way to production. That's the most likely purpose of the Gigafactory Mexico. The Roadster is in a completely different league to the Cyberster. It will have at least double the horsepower and will be more of a hypercar like the Rimac Nevera. That's not to say the the Cyberster won't be a compelling product and sell in bigger numbers than the Roadster, but they will be competing for a completely different customer base. As far as I can tell, the Roadster isn't a priority for Tesla, they are more interested in getting practical vehicles into the hands of as many people as possible. Possibly they could produce a lower-cost version of the Roadster like the Cyberster, but cars like that traditionally sell in smaller numbers than hatchbacks and SUV's so Tesla probably won't be going there in a hurry.

Cheap to buy but not awful and cheap inside compared to many a car. So the sports car should be a winner. They know they have a good following now outselling Volvo so they really can't lose. Far more important for Tesla to get the 3rd gen platform compact car production up and running, and they know that. Hence the Giga Mexico plant is the priority over the Roadster 2. That said, what Tesla proposes for a $200k hypercar is a way better value proposition than anything the likes of Ferrari can offer at that price point. There's room for both. We need a diverse range of models to complete the transition to electric, so its welcome. Personally, I'm still waiting for an electric sports estate that's better than the current MG5. If the Tesla launches in 2023 it'll not be able to use the Qilin battery that packs 500kWh/kg. That means that it will HAVE to be designed to run batteries that weight 1,4 times those of anything designed to run the Qilin.
OTOH, the MG launches in 2024. That means that the company can still modify the whole design to run the lighter/more powerful battery.
That leaves the question; who wants to be first, and who wants to be best?
MG can afford to wait, because anything that does the job will be "Good enough". The fact that it could simply be... superb would just ice the cake. Because having the Qilin battery could be the sort of transformative engineering that turns an MGBGT into a Mazda MX5.
A Tesla launched in 2023 is going to weigh in with about 650kg just in the batteries. Yet a Cyberster with a reduced battery pack (instead of 200kWh, one with 130-150 would still be capable of 1000km if the weight is contained). That means that the Tesla would be pretty much guaranteed to hit the weigh bridge at over 2T, the MG could end up with a battery pack weighing in at 250kg.
That 400kg of mass, translated into 400kg of momentum and inertia requires MUCH more substantial engineering, especially with such an unnecessary top speed., whereas the MG's mass/momentum and inertia add up to something that is going to be really rather a lot of fun, and I wouldn't mind betting that it'll be far more fun than the rather ridiculous Tesla.
What makes the MG's equations so positive is that with that reduction in weight, you can still engineer it to be reliable..
The real question has to be; how much will that CATL battery transform this battle? And will SAIC be willing to wait.
Oh, and BTW, the Qilin should also be cheaper than current batteries, so the market price of the Cyberster may be even less than expected. And I know that Tesla are already on CATL's order books. I just don't see the Roadster getting that battery quickly.

Beautiful looking car but why's it so big? It's almost as long and wide as a Tesla Model 3, that's a bit ridiculous for a two seater. What's taking up all that space?

Love the way roadster is cited constantly when it's never actually happened. The ultimate vapour ware. The major advantage of tge MG is the fact that it will actually roll off the production line. The Tesla won't!

A true heir to the MG roadsters from the 50s and 60s would have a lightweight body, modest battery, and "acceptable" power. It would cost € 30 000. "Fun".

Math is hard. I'm leaning towards the MG not needing a giant battery and that kind of range. It's also supposed to come in multiple power options, so likely battery options too. Neither the Tesla nor MG actually exist at this point, so let's see what actually comes to market at what price.

Nice styling but a 200kwh battery pack in a small roadster? It'll feel like it has lead boots and is seriously inefficient.

I welcome increased EV choice. I’m not sure the Tesla Roadster and the Cyberster are in the same market - other than being 2 seater sports cars. Like comparing the MG4 to the electric Merc G Wagon. I’ve put a deposit down on the MG. I currently have an Ioniq 5 P45 & Honda e. So not sure which I’d sell. MG dealerships will be supporting a different market, with higher expectations. They indicated price likely to start with a 5, not as you’d suggested, but let’s see.

Anyone can make a fantastic looking prototype and provide the hype (dont get me wrong i quite like its look) but its in its mass production thats the hard part - i wonder who said that.... hmmmm lol

If range can be enough to stop anxiety along with fear of batteries not blowing up then this may be a winner.
At present with EV's losing half their purchase price within two years, would wait and see what glitches show up before considering buying.
Let some other fools find out at their expense to see it's shortcomings. Being built in China is still a bone of contention because of continuing reliability issues because of continuing low standards of quality still ever present...
