Calvin, you sound great. Don't listen to people who are incapable of putting a sentence together. I could listen to you all day. You're work is great and you're a fantastic teacher.

Sense of a humor is a subjective thing; personally it brought a smile on my face. Had me even more engrossed in your training because of your teaching style.
I fall asleep/perish in videos which just go from step to step, share no logic why a certain step is being taken. While I am sure there are many who don't want to know why a certain step is being taken & can do with spoon-feeding.
I like your personalized style - not every artist is a great teacher: you are 1 of the few exceptions.

    Calvin, not many
top photographers and Photoshop experts reveal as much as you do. This is
fantastic , thanks for taking the time to share this "freaky" process! Please keep sharing your knowledge.

Great new way to get details. Don't listen to the people bashing you about your sense of humor. They've lost theirs and are just jealous.

Take a chill pill. If you don't like how Calvin teaches, don't do what he's showing you. That will keep the market more lucrative for those of us who do use his techniques to differentiate and provide clients with something different.

Oh Calvin ;)... There is no "S T R G" key on an english keyboard, because STRG stands for "Steuerung". On english keyboards it's "CTRL" for control.

  • @madebythebird

Fantastic to see this technique explained well!
I often add mask the vivid light layer for foreground detail.
Don't you dare adjust your jokes … or anything;) Got no time for flaccid presentations. Looking forward to your next!!
ps: Haters and sensitive folk won't survive this line of work. They shall surely end up clear-cutting building supplies.

Easier, more effective and simpler method ; Frequency Separation.
    + Duplicate layer twice.
    + Group them.
+ Select the bottom layer, rename to "Blur" and blur it using Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur (I usually do a 12-25 Pixels)
+ Select the top group layer and call it "High Pass". Go to Menu - Image - Apply Image
+ In the Apply Image menu : Select the Blur Layer, change blend mode to Subtract and Scale = 2, Offset = 128
+ Change the High Pass blending mode to Linear Light
+ Add layer mask to High Pass layer. Paint in additional details for ultra control or lower the opacity for simpler method.
    Cheers

Thanks for the tutorial, the only thing I saw change in the before and after was the shadow of the girl. Not trying to seem ungrateful at all, just trying to learn techniques, but didn't see much happen, and why was there 2 background copies made, I only saw changed made to the 2nd layer copy? Thanks in advance!

Hey, Calvin. Really enjoyed your tutorial, and I think you are very funny as well! Don't take any notice of the guy who said you weren't - I certainly appreciated your sense of humour! But I'm wondering if you can explain one detail for me. Why use surface blur instead of Gaussian blur (which runs instantly where surface blur takes ages)? I tried it on one of my images and got, what I felt were equally good images with either technique. Both seemed to give "freaky amazing detail".
