If you ever find yourself in the possession of a garage you might need to know how to replace the lock on the overhead door.

That is the exact same door latch that I have on a building I maintain. I actually swapped out the entire cylinder so it works with our master key system for the property. Solid lock, on a terrible fiberglass garage door (your door is in much better shape than ours). Great video!
Tap the lock washer on with a socket. If the stem of the new lock is too short for the inner handle at least tie it to the mechanism so that you can use it freehand in an emergency. Obviously best to buy a lock with a stem that is long enough. A job to do on my garage. Thanks for posting.
Video was helpful, thanks. Also I used the smallest Stanley allen wrench from the set and it fit behind the metal ring and made it easy to pop off.
Look at this guy and his fancy pliers.
Knipex are actually really nice pliers, they're the only type I have. They are a little on the pricey side, but totally worth the extra money.
Nathan Salapat whooooooosh.
The black nut is called a push nut
Ti install use a wrench using the closed side and a hammer
Thanks …. that helped a whole lot . Thanks again
Filuma door, right?
Seems like it would be more secure if the screws were just bolts that are not un-screwable from the outside?
It would be, you could probably use security screws, or fill the screw heads with epoxy. When locked the handle blocks the screws, so you'd have to struggle to get a screwdriver in place to remove them.
Cheers mate 👍
You forgot to put the inside door handle on before you installed the grommet :) Other than that nice video.
The stem on my lock wasn't actually long enough for me to install the handle on the inside...
@@NathanSalapat So how do you plan on opening the door if you get shut inside the garage? lol
@@pcprodoc um..push the garage door opener button
@@realtyrocks1969I don’t think there’s an opener that’s why he needed a new lock.
thank you,sweetie!
Why doesnt he show how the lock operates? Gotta visualize what he's trying to show with his fingers and hands.
Nothing like cutting rusty metal over your face while looking up with no safety glasses. I wish you and your vision a lucky future.
Did I forget to mention that I was wearing my safety contact lenses?
ok so what is the top key used for ?
It was used for the old lock, but I didn't have a key for it. Rather than replace everything I just put a new handle on it.
ok so if that top key is locked but you don't have the handle will the door still open? because I have the top key but no handle will it still open
If the top is locked the door will probably not open. I disengaged the mechanism from the inside of the door that connected to that. If you have an access door it should be easy to remove the plungers that lock the door into the track.
If you wanted to remove the circular lock, what would you use to fill it? I have a open circle on my door from when I bought the house. I dont know what goes there so its open
I would think a hardware store would sell some sort of plug to fill it, but honestly I don't know.
@@NathanSalapat I know that I am late to the party but what you need I believe is called a dummy lock.
Yeah, a dummy lock, or if u don't want to see or confuse anyone with an unused lock, take it off and use a carriage bolt with a washer that fits snug under the escutcheon and around the bolt, and another washer, lock washer, and nut for the inside.
You should watch youtube how to install the lock, you know one that the guy selfie the video
What about the inside handle
The inside handle usually has a wire or chain that connects to the two 'plungers' that lock the door into the track. I removed The old lock kept the handle from being able to turn from the inside or outside, with this replacement the inner handle was removed and put onto the new lock.
Why doesn’t he zoom in
Does the lock work? Did the old inside handle not fit? It's an s hook not s ring. Jeez man... Obviously you didn't read the whole page in the news about WHY all those cats died.
Yep the lock works. The old inside handle did not fit as it should have.
Let's hope more cats die, they're just demon spawn anyway.
Just found Ryland Adams doppleganger
I don't know who that is, so I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult.
you're very handsome
Thanks I guess. :S
