  • @amywalker7515

    How taut does the cable have to be and how short do you cut the end? Is the the only thing holding the cable taut that one screw on each side?

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  3 года назад

      Yes, just the tag end that fits really snug into the handle and the wrap around with the screw on the striker end.
      It was not extremely tight, just a light bit of slack for future adjustments. With the slack in the cables the strikers still get pulled away from the fixed latch with ample (2cm?) room, which means to open the garage door, the handle must be turned a decent amount and not with just a tiny twist motion. Hope this helps!

    Do the instructions say what size the hole has to be? My garage door only has a slide lock on the inside, and I want to install one of these so can get in from the outside with a key

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  4 года назад

      Yes; with what I purchased there were two hole size options. Before you buy, try messaging the manufacturer for the useable hole sizes (sometimes it is online). You will want to have both slide locks ... These manual style openers rely on the cable tension to spring slider of both sides.

    Purchased a house with this manual lock, how do I reverse it to automatic?

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  4 года назад

      Automatic opener is technically easier as all rails are in place already and you just need to attach the motor to the track. If you mean am automatic lock system that is going to be very dependant on the product you buy ... That said, pushing a garage motor at rest with the garage door is ... Very difficult; that is your lock :) that is the main reason why I converted to manual because I have no other way into this garage and we have suffered a lot of electrical power outage in my neighbourhood.

    • @johnvgig
      @johnvgig Год назад

      You would simply remove the manual lock. Remove the two cables and the two spring latches on the edges of the door. Any electric garage door, when closed is in theory locked. (That is one cannot open the garage door unless one engages the electric motor. ) In case of power failure there is a rope release mechanism attached to the electric motor track that can be manually released so the door can be manually opened. But as the original poster stated, he had no access to the inside of his garage except for the overhead door. In that situation if he had an electric garage door opener, he'd not be able to open the overhead door until the electricity came back in. (Some models of electric garage door openers do have battery backups.)

    Do you know how unlock from the inside

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  3 года назад

      In this lock set I have, the handle turns on the inside even if the outside lock is keyed to locked because the handle can turn either side to pull on the cables to the strikers.

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  4 года назад

      It is a "Clospay" branded kit; they are all very generic and most likely from a similar factory with different boxing labels. Just make sure to review what you have on your door and frame before buying any kit :)

    I honestly can open it in one minute or less. Locks are a false sense of security

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  4 года назад +2

      In most cases, yes, the weakest link is the opening itself... Or that window next to the door hah hah. That said, a lock is better than none with the hope that neighbouring folks will take note to the breaking in noise. As well, a proof of the break in is required if anything is to be claimed with insurance.

    Pretty reckless to have your daughter stand inside for the very first trial. If for some reason the mechanism jammed or something wasn't lined up right, she'd have been stuck in there with no way out. We've got one of these to put in and with my luck, that is what will happen. I'm going to make sure my car is outside the garage when I put mine in.

    • @AbrahamChan88
      @AbrahamChan88  4 года назад +1

      Heh heh you did see the part that I tested from the inside right before stating "trial" right? Well before testing, the flexing of the strikers was exercised and I am confident of my cable crimping ability.
      If you also have no way back in, be prepared to cut the side of the house (then install a window or door) or the garage door itself and replace with a be garage door - which I was kind of thinking of doing since the door has been backed into a few times now :(
