Every time I go to the fish store, whether it be a local or chain store, I look for clown loaches. If they have some healthy ones, that are plump and have good color, and no connecting tanks show signs of disease, I normally buy around 3. Its a bonus if I find any with cool patterns like a forth black line or a line that only goes through half of their body. I then quarantine them for 2-4 weeks, get them use to my food and water conditions, then add them to my school of clowns in my main tank. They got along with my dojo loach in the same tank. I also had a tank before with a solo clown loach and he did very well and was always out and showed no sign of stress always having dark colors. I had him with 9 golden barbs that he would school with. I think they all thought that they were the same fish or at least were good friends.
Ive had Clownies for decades. Sadly, I'm down to just 1. The others died due to an ick outbreak. And now, no fish store in my area carries them! Fred has some danios and tetras to swim with. I do keep living plants in my tank. One thing I will add-loaches will herd and all try to fit into small spaces together. Many, many years ago, I had 5 of them crowd into a small decorative piece in the tank, and due to the small opening once they were in there they couldnt get out and I lost them all. :(. I love these little guys!!
Thank you! We actually found him at a store with one eye. We wanted to give him a good home. From how he looks my guess is it was genetic and he was born without it
@TheAquaticCoder Yeah, he is still a cool fish:) I have seen the odd silver doller with no eyes. You can see it was genetic. At least he is happy in your tank.
I have a huge group bought recently....keeping them with justa few hoplo and synodontis...They are mostly 2inch....Water seems fine ..I do a bit of water changes once a week say 30%...feeding dry feeds mainly but once in a while frozen foods...The issue is I have been losing few here and there....some of them look bloated and die...no white spots....temp at 30 degree C..I really am not sure what is going wrong...can it be just that the group is not very good to tackle disease,??genetically..As I feel im doing same with all other fish....another group of clown loaches I have are having no Issues.....What could be the problem??
Yeah probably a batch that was already sick or weakened from stress. I can't really say I have any recommendation except to quarantine the ones in the problem group if possible
Clown loaches can get very old! I bought Clown loaches 23 years ago. Still enjoying them. It's a life time commitment.

We have a 55 gallon tank we just bought clown loaches one of them is going around and nibbling on every other fish in the tank!
