      Hello! This may be a silly question, but are polar blue parrot cichlids the same thing as a regular convict cichlids? When I see them at stores theres babies labeled convicts that look just the same as a polar blue parrots but idk if they are the same thing.... love your videos btw!

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  2 года назад +1

      @@Lexie-Louu Thanks for the compliment! No they are not the same thing but they are close. Polar Parrots can be seen as a "short body" variation of convicts. They posses most of the same traits except are known to be a little less aggressive (but not always). When both are small though they probably look similar although small parrots still have the beak like mouth. They might just not be as familiar with calling them Polar Parrots or they think labeling them as convicts might sell better.

    I have a little new young polar blue parrot in with my 4 yr old KKP. My KKP is massive and this little cutie has absolutely no fear of him. She has plenty of places to hide if she needs to, but she is extremely curious and is constantly investigating the tank and what the KKP is doing.

    So am I correct in understanding these fish may not be a blood parrot mix at all? Thanks for the great info that's actually based on experience 🙂

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  Год назад +1

      That's correct. The actual origin isn't 100% known from what I read when researching. Seems to be mostly theories. But most speculation is that Blood Parrots are not one of the species they are mixed from. Similar shape of the mouth though. It wouldn't surprise me to see more and more types of parrots in the future with similar mouths as the result of crossing different species.

  • @michaelfleming9757

    I once had convicts cross hondros red point cichlids, and they looked like convicts, some had a softer type mouth, but didn't in my experience look like the polor blue, I suspect that the polor blue are convict males cross blood parrots.

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  2 года назад

      Hi there, if this is happening the only option really is to separate the parents once the eggs start to hatch. Probably between 2-4 days after you first see the eggs. You could remove the babies once they hatch but I think removing the parents temporarily is easier. This requires you to have a 2nd tank though.
      The other option is to get plants with a lot of cover like Java moss but there is no guarantee that this will work.

But in my experience with larger cichlids if they are raised together from tiny juveniles they tend to leave everything alone and look forward to eating what they are raised on... They definitely definitely don't grow to the size that is told... I can't see them getting no bigger than maybe 3 inches and that's pushing it... I believe they are something different than what we are told and I believe they are best suited for actual " tropical community" tanks.. the traditional small community with ability to still add a cichlid that won't eat everything... At this point I'm probably going to put it in the guppies tank to possibly keep the breeding in check somewhat and that's with hopes that they are even interested in live food... Thanks!

    • @TheAquaticCoder

      If you have 2 females I would personally keep those. My reasoning is you might not get so lucky trying to get males and may find yourself with a male/female pair. The aggressiveness goes way up then. I guess you rehome one but I see no reason why 2 females wouldn't be enjoyable

      I think aggressiveness wise this combination will work in most situations. With that size Oscar it should be fine for a long time. The worry I have is once the Oscar is fully grown. There may be a chance the Polar Parrot could fit in their mouth.
      So in summary my answer is yes it will work until the Oscar is fully grown. At that point it is a risky combination. It may or may not work then.

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  2 года назад +2

      It's normal for parrots to lose color when stressed. I saw this happen when I moved or do large maintenance. I would recommend using a test kit to ensure there is no ammonia, nitrite, and that the nitrate is not too high. Otherwise if they have places to hide that is best until they become comfortable. Hopefully in a few days they get adjusted to their new home.

      Hard to say really. I think you could but you might end up with a lot of aggression in the tank. Depends on the individual fish and if any pairs form. Pairs tend to be much more aggressive from my experience. You should definitely be able to have at least 2 in the tank in my opinion.

  • @tabathawesterouellette482
    @tabathawesterouellette482 2 года назад +2

    I ended up with male and female. They bred within 2 weeks of having them. They've taken care of babies.
    My question is: Is it normal for the black stripes to fade? They are vibrant with other coloration, but it seems like the stripes fading.

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  2 года назад

      That's cool to hear they bred so quick! I have not seen that in mine. It could be that the pattern is just changing as they grow or even from breeding. If they look vibrant I don't think there is any reason for concern right now. Best of luck on the babies!
