A good Shostakovich 4th, but we’re still waiting for the definitive, Ormandy notwithstanding.

Thank you for the spot on review of Previn's contributions to the music world! I would add accompanying Chung on the Walton Violin Concerto and the Digital recording of Ma Mere l'oye with Pittsburgh to the many special perfromances. Also, it's hard to surpass the audiophile sound and performances on his My Fair Lady and West Side Story (Contemporary Rec). The definition of a "full life".

My favorites are Nielsen 1, Walton 1, and Vaughan Williams 2, 3, and 5. Also the Shostakovich 5 with the LSO.

Previn was always a favorite of mine. Some people claimed he had a chip on his shoulder, but I always felt "no chip" just something to prove, and boy did he prove it👍
If anybody has doubts about Previn just listen to...
    Walton 1st
    Prokofiev 5th
    Rachmaninoff 2nd
    Britten
    Shostakovich 5th
Vaughn Williams symphonies....and the great Tuba Concerto with John Fletcher 👍
    Previn/LSO years are truly golden.

I have the Previn Vaughan Williams cycle in an RCA box, pressed in the UK and it’s fantastic. None of the LPs are marked with Dynagroove, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Those RCAs pressed in the UK tend to sound much better than their US Dynagroove counterparts.

@@AudiophiliaChannel The RVW 3rd (Pastoral), a long time favorite of mine, gets special high praise. Previn’s recording blew me away - it was as though I was hearing RVW 3 for the first time! Great records can do that, and when they do it’s obvious that something special is happening between the conductor, the orchestra, the recording engineers, the composer, and you!

Thanks so much for a really enjoyable and informative episode. Looking forward to the Monteux episode! In 2007 (?) RCA Japan issued a remastered version of Previn's Walton 1 on CD that sounds excellent. It is now sadly "unobtainium" :-(

Thanks for the kind words, James. Yes, another viewer suggested non-Dynagroove Japan Victor Company pressing, also sadly unobtainium.

Thank you for highlighting this wonderful artist and conductor. I treasure many of my EMI records with Previn. He was blessed to get great engineering as well.
    Great video, lots of detail.

nice over view. The EMI / LSO recordings sure benefited from the 2 Christophers EMI team. Anything with their name on the credits is usually worth picking up for its sonics. The RCA recordings released with dynagroove can be easily bettered sonically by the Victor Music Japan pressings where no dynagroove process was used in the tape to lacquer transfer.

You should check out his West Side Story on Contemporary Records. Chad from Acoustic Sounds reissued it on his label I think in 2022. It’s great

I love your channel, a good mine. Can you tell me what speakers you listen to please. Always interested from a musicians perspective of how you try and reproduce orchestral works and the problem with trying to reproduce the first Violins en masse. I agree with your sentiments about Previn , his Rachmaninoff has never been surpassed. We are so lucky to have his piano concerto recordings with Ashkenazy to make things complete. Cheers Ian.

@@AudiophiliaChannel Thanks for your reply, I will pop over there and take a look. As a speaker designer and a passionate classical recording nut I always like to know what speakers reviewers and musicians use. My never ending quest for the reproduction of violins that sound realistic never ends!. Cheers Ian.
