I'm sure I must be the only one to mourn the loss of the old two lane pre-motorway A1 from the M18 to Scotch Corner. This was a regular route for us in the 80s and 90s being the last section of the long journey between the West Country and Darlington. This was always the most interesting section of the journey with sights such as Ferrybridge Power Station, the Little Chefs, truckstops and the roadside recovery yards but it was also the most challenging for the driver with lorries pulling out to overtake without warning, tractors coming out of farm tracks and cars turning right out of small side roads through gaps in the central reservation. It's good to have a snapshot of some small parts of it here for posterity.
Really nice! I grew up in Kirk Smeaton so know that exit well. There used to be a terrifying gap on the Northbound where you could turn right across the traffic - after a few scares my old man stopped trying and we'd take the longer way round via the Wentbridge turnoff :-) Very nostalgic although today Darrington to Red House is barely much different and well overdue an upgrade.
Just think all them lovely old cars and trucks are long gone to the big car park in the sky.
Hopefully if any survived they will be at the Heath Classic Transport Rally, at Wakefield. On the 27th August

Another great video . A lot less litter and rubbish on the motorway back then !
Slight glimpse of the Swiss Cottage in Wentbridge ... Can't understand why that place closed down !!
Demolished & big house there now
"conveniently burned down" to make way for new big house 🏡🙄
Brilliant, my era and my area. What cars are you in though?
On the 1987 -1990 video`s. A 1981 Escort Mk3.
And a 1976 Escort Mk2 Before then
Do you have any footage of the Rothwell/Robin Hood area?
No, sorry.
Do you have any footage driving through Sharlston?
Only when driving by from Featherstone to Wakefield.
