The real standout thing is the condition of the roads. No potholes, no bodged patchwork repairs, road markings without worn out or missing sections, and clear gutters and drains. And no litter flying around.
This really does highlight just how generally dilapidated things have become in the UK in recent years.

It was a great time to be a teenager, great fashion, music, freedom without technology intrusion into life, great sports, tron style arcades, communities looked out for each other, kids grew up on the streets with freedom for adventures and accidents. Very little school homework yet decent enough schooling to succeed. NHS actually worked. Lots of local shops selling stuff to people who knew each other well. Children able to take part time work for cash if they wanted any age from 11 or 12 years old. If you had an accident no-one was getting sued, you learnt your lesson and got on with life. People fixed each others cars. Kids danced at discos and got off with each other. This was part of learning life lessons. No ID checks, as you grew up it was exciting to get away with things under age. Sometimes this went wrong but mostly it was amazing. People got paid cash, took it home and divided it up for the family and household bills. What was left was for the pub or a party. Of course life wasn’t perfect, but it was more in keeping with the essence of what we are as social human beings thriving on freedom than it is today.

I was born. I was 22 and not long graduated with a degree in botany from a university in south Wales. Millions were out of work (including me) and the miners strike was happening with all the angst and anguish. People were living in carboard boxes. Bleak times if you were actually there. There were some good points. Unemployment had peaked. News was on telly or radio or newspapers and there was no social media magnifying horrors and making sure everyone knew 'how terrible' things were. Our Government used things called D notices to keep bad news out of the media. I could just about keep a 125 Honda in petrol on my dole money and my lovely parents were happy to have me at home rent free so long as I did some stuff around the house. I could travel a bit on the bike and there were interesting things to do that didn't cost much. I was skint but debt free (I went to Uni on a full grant, not a loan). Cars were easy to fix with basic tools but they rotted. Slight accident? Kick it straight and carry on. Now they don't rot as quick, contain lots of plastic and have chips and technobollox throughout that needs serious money to fix. They all look the same. The music was good and every Woolies had a bargain bin where interesting stuff turned up. But it wasn't better than now. Just different
