Super cool! I am almost finshing my 1979 R80/7 brat. Just fault finding my wiring of the M Unit. Then detailing to follow. I relocated my battery on the underside, but had to modify the centre stand slightly to accomodate. What are you thinking?
Sounds great! Good luck with the final touches of your build. If you want, send me a picture on instagram (@moto_wrenchers) would love to see your brat R80. And your solution to moving the battery. Sounds like a smart idea 👌
Hi Laurent! Thank you so much for you comment. You literally made my day. Please Joshua explain what's the big differenz between a bike build by 1978 or by 1982 ore 1992. Do you have a link or something to get more (your) information for German wrenchers.😊
Hi, there is a book by Helmut Heusler that will answer your question 1000-times better than I ever could. Plus, it describes a lot of the maintenance and repair tasks very thoroughly. Best book, if you’re thinking about getting an airhead. And when it comes to customizing it helps to check in with a TÜV guy because of changes in regulations over the years. Always the rules of the year the bike was built apply, so as a rule of thumb…the older the better = more liberty when customizing. What is your plan?
Hey Joshua, thanks for you information, I try to get this book. I am thinking about a project like yours but at this time I think I want to start with a R100R from the 90th but it has to be get a legal German license
Sounds great. What is it about the R100R that you like? Not many of the modifications I made are actually relevant for the TÜV…fortunately. As long as you keep within the normal regulations obviously. But it’s okay to build your own fenders, seat, etc.
@@MotoWrenchers mine is from 72 and we are mostly keeping it original but we need to go over the engine, the handlebars and maybe go over the electrics but it is mostly in good condition

@@MotoWrenchers my idea was to do a realistic first project with realistic budget. I love the old BMW 2V and so my plan is not to overwright its DNA completely. And I want to keep it a bit rudimentaly and not to clean like most BMW Café Racers are. And I do everything by myself like you with maybe a short helping hand of a friend. I have to do it at home in the garden or the car garage of my neighbour with just normal tools like everybody have. As I am in the lucky situation that my R100 RT Monolever from 1988 is in perfect technical conditions I can concentrate only on a visual transformation. So as a first custom bike project this is a realistic one which hopefuly inspires other beginners also to dare to do so. So I thought it could be interesting for a handful of custom novices and decided to film it and put it here on RUclips. Sorry my vids are just rudimental but in future I will do it better.

Hey, very nice project you got here! I’m myself into a 1979 R60/7 build. Concerning the battery do you have any advice you could give me? I’m planning to buy a smaller battery than the original, just like you. But I got concern about the low CCA (210), do you think it’s gonna be a problem? Thanks for the answer, keep the good work!
Hi Mathieu, thank you very much. Yeah, I had the same concern. I asked the guys at the store if it was enough to start the R80 and they assured me that it is. I hope the battery holds up to its promises. Haven't tried it yet, but I can do a video about it once it's installed, if that would help you. And hey, good luck with your project!
