I started my career working for a big branded company for 3 years (bond) through placement and the company decided my roles. I was frequently changed in some operations while I strived to work in Project management. Now I work for a company that is not any top companies but I am a valued resource and I have been working on projects and was able to crack a big brand company because I applied my experience in the PMP topics but I have decided to stay back with my current employer for the respect and the value. May be sometimes we might want to share our talent to companies like mine to help them grow... :-)

I rose to the top of my small company, thought the CEO had my back. But to my horror, he turned tables on me, pitted me against his other employees, undermined my work, never acknowledged my good contribution, and constantly put me down. I have no choice but to think about my emotional and mental well-being. I quit today. The CEO has agreed to give me a reference (I'm getting it in writing). Good riddance to bad rubbish. I know that I'll be successful in finding something good that I deserve. If your CEO /boss is a psychopath or narcissist, quit before it becomes unbearable.

I listen to this 2 years ago at a time I was going through worst time in my career. I decided to fight back but I decided to fight back by becoming the CEO of my career. I fought back by improving my skillset, improving my professional brand. Result, my salary increased by 100% and my side income (my afterwork job) is thriving and the same workplace that ignored me and treated me like trash is doing all kind of things to keep me because I have become valuable and attractive in the market. I still comeback here to remind myself of these career advice gems.

Agree with all the points apart from leaving a big name. I'm mid 30's and did this 10 years ago to start contracting for more money. A different route than most of my friends, I could not be happier that I did. Whilst they are all ripe to go into higher paying, higher responsibility jobs (just as they are having new family's) I'm in a position to retire and live off investment income. There are more than one ways to skin a cat, but leaving for more earlier is a great option if you do it right and invest wisely. Having the choice to work, not driven by need is a game changer for workplace satisfaction and having the ability to choose what you do with your time is a game changer for life satisfaction.

I get that a lot of these are great points, but the job you are describing isn't the one I'm leaving. I have worked at this company for 9 years and I keep getting pushed back down to cover the entry level(used to be temp) jobs because turnover is so high. I'm not learning anything new because I work 70+ hours a week to do the jobs of 2 people. It doesn't matter that they are a big name if now my resume shows I'm not worth promoting because I've been passed over so many times because they can't afford to lose me. These reasons are why I've been miserable for 9 years and can now afford to quit. I'm going back for my masters and not looking back.

Very good video with some great advice. However, I’ve been fighting against office politics, an inadequately implemented change program and a manager who simply wouldn’t support me. I managed to fight back and stand up for myself over two years and finished the project and process I needed to. Once I’d done this I then decided it was time to move on, but was very pleased I stood up to what was going on. I took a lot from dealing with the situation I was facing. I start my new job next month. I’d highly recommend fighting back, it will benefit you hugely. But equally, recognise if the situation is truly untenable to avoid unneeded ego driven damage.

Deniz, I feel that I am being bullied, and feel like is is very difficult for me to go to work. I just force myself to go and stay there up to the end of my shift. I’ve been hearing co workers talking bad behind my back them thinking I can’t hear them. It’s just so sad. I need this job so much to pay my bills i feel embarrassed everyday to be there. I sometimes want to be fired but i have been there only 3 months. I feel sometimes worthless and stupid. I really appreciate you for this video I will try to push myself to keep this job as long as i can.

Hi Wendy. I never comment but I felt compelled to after readying your comment. I was bullied at my previous job along with ageism. It was a very toxic environment and till this day I sometimes struggle. I felt as they were trying to break me. For whatever reason they felt threaten because of the many years of experience I had.
It was so crazy that my hiring manager told me on my first day of work that you will see people who work and others who do not. His predecessor literally left a note on his computer and walked out never to been seen again. They had to call him to figure out he quite. Less than a month my manager quite.
I quite my job without having another job. I’m not saying to do that at all. I had my wife to support me and family....I’d go to work literally crying and feeling like wtf is going to happen today. When people hear about bullying they think elementary or jr. high/high school. The worst part about bullying in a professional work environment is that it’s done covertly and subtle. I feel for you because the kind of stress you should have is work related not people related.
Lastly, it was so bad even after I left my job that I would have melt downs at home. Felt like I let my family down even though I had their backing and even supported me leaving this company. I went to see therapist and went on medication. It helped a lot but every now and then I get flash backs. All I can say is that it gets better but I highly recommend you look for a new job and fight back. It takes courage but I can’t stress enough to fight back. Sorry for the rant...stay strong, be positive, and be proactive in looking for a new job. This is just a moment in time.

Sergio L : I’m going through the same thing for the second time. I quit my toxic job of 9 years and was unemployed for 2 years with a few short term temp positions. I went back to the university in a different department and experiencing the same issue. I’ve only been there for 9 months and I’m ready to quit. I am continuously being set up and harassed by the boss and another coworker. People don’t understand the extent of work place bullying.

I should say this: almost every company I have worked for has had spies.
Be very careful what you talk because sometimes they will interpret it as a threat which will fire you from the company.

I'm at my mid 20's. I almost did everything but follow these advices. I started off in a large cap company engineering firm with a permanent contract and thought I was invincible given all the job new opportunities the large cap company gave me. I quit that job for a no-name brand with promising opportunities, I did this a couple of times. Got fired once, just left out the worksite for dissatisfaction of the management twice.
Finally ended up working as a day labourer on a monthly contract that may or may not get renewed at the end of the month. Resume looks like shit. Currently underpaid, underworked, overqualified. All of this in less than five years.
This is my worst financial decision.

Good points. Some cases are completely different. One of my friend who worked in a school for more than 2 decades was harassed tremendously. She told that there was inbuilt camera in monitor and IT Dept had full access to her computer. Monitoring is normal and even micromanaging is also not a crime. But she was mentally tortured, as her work (she was good in computers) was tampered with at all times. And the inbuilt camera access to them helped to play well. She was surrounded by players. Few were asking her to do certain task, when she started that, there were few in IT/other rooms to ensure that it is not done on time by continously tampering with it, then boss would come and shout on the top of her voice to announce that the work is not done on time. Also other emotional triggers were played with..Life brings experience, different people face different problems. But thank you Sir for your valuable suggestions.

Indeed very helpful video and a very hard medicine to swallow. I am at a tough situation where my current even make me suicidal. I am struggle to put on a tough mask and just trying so hard to just hang in there.. I can’t quit because I have financial obligations. And all the points on your video are extremely helpful. I should follow your advice because it’s a right thing to do. But I just don’t know how to hang in there anymore.

Iris Lynn I’m so sorry. Hopefully things improved since then. What helps me is no longer turning things inward but fighting back, also everyday doing something that will improve my life, could be eating better, exercise, and most of all improving skills to increase my self esteem and work related knowledge. Investing in my life and saving money.

Hi, I totally can relate. This speaks volume to me when you mentioned about suicide and the fact that you can’t quit because of financial obligations. Im in the same situation. I feel hopeless and helpless. I dont have much choices because i dnt have any specialties. The demands of my job is unbearable and it gives me anxiety. I can’t sleep, i cant eat, its making me anxious every single minute of my life. It feels like im draining my brain everyday. It’s mentally exhausting. It’s making me sick. Literally. Whenever i think about it, i want to throw up. Dragging myself to even wake up and wrk. I cant explain enough, how mentally exhausting it is. Im miserable. I dont know how to deal with it anymore. No one can help me financially if I quit. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Deniz Sasal Sir,you should be Professor Emeritus as you have an clear connect with your audiences having dilemma of what next ,as workplace bullying have turned working environment into a living hell ,roasting mental inferno at times encouraged by higher ups in the hierarchy. How to deal with them when higher ups in the hierarchy collude and set you up for failure often complicity of teammates ganging up with insubordination,GASLIGHTING,discounting, and devaluing ones contribution.
Yours is the best presentation helpful for ones like me who have learnt to walk alone in life and never given up in life though rusted in the process.
Thank you, waiting for your next video.🙏👍Your talk made me cheerful again against all odds stacked .

Liked this alot. Couple things: my boss wrote me up for a variety of emotional issues that had nothing to do with my work performance. One included me not being emotional and sympathetic enough. I am a low-key person who doesn't show alot of emotion and she is a "cheerleader" pollyanna. I have said "no" to extra tasks and been written up as "insubordinate". I am the dumping ground for every extra task in my department yet when I finish the tasks and request more, she stalls. So, I was written up for refusing but when I ask, she has nothing to give me.... it's a lose-lose situation that I am trying hard to get out of.

Thank so much! You've been the most practical after searching more than a month how to handle my toxic work environment. This stressor is mostly psychological, much better than having no job or a job that stifles your career future. Fight for myself! Situation may change. You are more capable to switching to a better job if you are employed. Being bullied or being jobless unable to meet your ends, the later is definitely worse and at times irreversible!

Very true! You said it all. As a fresh medical graduate who had just finished her internship, i got a job in a health insurance company. I was initially happy because i had no interest and intentions to practice. I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur specifically in the beauty industry. After working for 1 year i got frustrated due to office politics and i felt i was not learning anything that would help my entrepreneurial goals in future ,…so I Quit!! To start my business…..fast forward after a year I discovered I wasn’t fully prepared to start my own business because I wasn’t so good at committing. I found your page because I’m trying to change career paths into program management full time , (not sure if MBA is necessary ). While writing my cv I realized i was learning program management skills without knowing and that I actually had opportunities i could have grabbed if i wanted to and i had public holidays and weekends to spare to chase passions. In my one year business trial i finished my savings and trying to get a job (not medical). I’m glad I learned this now and I’m getting back on my feet! I was so engulfed with chasing money I forgot to chase impact and value. Your honesty and transparency is refreshing. I will definitely join the LIG

You are right! Thank you for shedding light on my mistakes. I left a huge company with the potential of great professional acceleration for a small company, and I feel I’ve taken myself out of the ballgame. The people are less skilled, less talented, less driven, my boss is nice but a terrible manager who has no understanding of people. The benefit is I don’t have 60 percent travel and I have more fulfilling personal life, but what you’re saying is true. Right now I’m “fighting back” by not becoming like them and trying to go way beyond what is expected until I secure a new job. I think a happy medium exists.
