If one does not expect to see something, one can easily not see something. Many of what Sidious chose were purposely obscure and complicated. Sidious was a complete master of manipulation. By being such a beaming smile, a firm hand of guidance as friend to many of the Jedi, it was easy to deceive them. It is hard to find an enemy where one sees a friend, hard to be suspicious and investigative of a man who is loved. Such was how Palpatine manipulated, constantly keeping the attention of his opponents exactly where he wanted them, such as with Mace Windu onto Anakin Skywalker, using the distrust of Mace and the disrespectful and resentful behavior to pry Anakin from the Jedi Order while keeping himself out of focus, or as with Yoda, always focused on those around Sidious and the great distant future but never on Sidious with suspicion until far too late. If one can manipulate whatever others are even capable of focusing on, what words are used and repeated in conversation, and what they feel, then that person can control others entirely.
