- macmost.com/e-2751 You can use the Shortcuts app to make QR codes that link to web pages. Once you have a Shortcut, you can easily reuse it to share a QR code, save it as an image, or even just copy to the clipboard to paste into a document you are working on.

Keep the Mac Shortcuts tutorials coming! I'm loving them and enjoying creating & using my own.
Gary - FINALLY! A shortcut that I can actually use! I teach an iPhone class to seniors with nearly 100 pages of handouts, with many references to various help topics on the web. I started using QR codes in the handouts, but had to go through a manual process to create each one. This makes that process so much easier. Brilliant! Thank you!
Using this technique (brilliant, by the way, Gary!) is a great tip for teaching classes to seniors. I may be teaching such a class in the next few months, and I'll use this tip! Thanks to both of you!
This is a great example, with the workflow being both short enough to easily follow and also genuinely useful. Nicely done!
That is cool! I love these shortcuts! Thank you! I never can fully grasp 'programming' but can follow along and it makes sense when I see it.
I've consumed three QR codes in my life but not one landed on a page I expected. Yikes.
Love your videos, Gary, and I recommend this page all the time.
Great stuff! Finally someone explaining how to create a shortcut in an easy way! Keep on going...
I have been searching for something like this for so long. Thank you!
Hi Gary. Request you to make iOS based shortcuts as well please. Shortcuts app seems to be more useful on the iPad & iPhone for general users / non technical users.
I found it SUPER useful. Thanks!
Really found this useful Gary. Thank you soo much.
Ok, this video was the final straw. This one put me over the edge. I have no choice now but to become a Patreon.
This was great. Thank you very much!!
Very cool Gary...thanks! Has a lot of potential uses.
SO, so, so very helpful. Thanks!
This is really great! And very useful too! Thanks!
This is way cool information, useful for so many things. Thank you thank you.
What a powerful shortcut. Is there any way to do some fancy formatting, like adding a border to the frame with text? Or could you add an image to the center?
Thanks Gary I understood that one 😁
Oh my .... QR codes without 3th party qr generators.. Is there something a mac can't do ? Thank you Gary.... keep up the good work 🙂
I do really like your channel so please don’t get me wrong. And it is my problem, I know, that I’m getting old and slow and my eyes are not 20/20 anymore. So, please, I am asking that you slow down a bit and instead of just making references to “here” and “there” while your mouse pointer is flying around the screen that you actually describe what “here” and “there” actually are. When I am trying to learn new procedures and concepts, I don’t want to just write down an algorithm; I want to understand what is going on so I can perform tasks without having to reference a set of instructions. I apologize to everyone if I’m making an unreasonable request. Thanks for all your videos
Not sure if this would help, but in RUclips in the bottom right corner the little gear wheel is Settings, in there you can slow the speed of the video down or speed it up. Although everything slows down, including the speech, maybe that would be helpful to track the mouse or hit the spacebar to pause the video when you need to digest what is being explained.
@@curtOphoto Yes, I have already tried those things but don’t care for them. I do hit the spacebar quite often on my iPad with magic keyboard or the remote while using my 4K Apple TV. And, of course rewind and rewind and pause and rewind. LOL!
Keep in mind a few things:
1. You can change the speed of RUclips videos. I suggest trying 75% to see if you like that better.
2. You can also pause the video any time you like and even go back to rewatch parts.
3. I have this in the "About" section of my site:
Q: You talk too fast in your videos. Can you slow down?
A: The way you see me (Gary) in my videos is the way I really talk. I am enthusiastic about technology and I think it shows in the videos. I do not try to slow myself down or alter how I talk in the videos. I just try to be myself. I know I can’t please everyone all the time, so no matter how I did the videos there would be a few complaints. But I know that if I tried to tone down my enthusiasm or be someone other than who I am, then there’s no way I would have made this many episodes over many years...
To add more to that, there is a lot that goes into making the videos. Not a single video I have ever made is 100% perfect the way I really want it when I post it. Usually far less. But every time I do something like go back and re-do a part of a video because I used the phrase "click here" instead of "click on the X next to the Y" it takes time and effort. If I keep going for perfection then soon I'll run out of steam and there will be no more videos. See how many other people have done 2700+ videos over 15 years with no major breaks. Maybe none, just me. That's because of burn-out, which I am trying to avoid.
So please excuse the imperfections. They are a necessary part of the creation process. Hope this provides some explanation.
Great! Super useful too.
This works! Thanks!
Thanks for this!!! :)
This is great and it worked for me just as described. However, when I upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 it seems to have broken the shortcut I created. It will no longer save to the Desktop and defaults to the Shortcuts folder, no matter what I have the "Save QR code to desktop" set as. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.
A very useful and informative video tutorial! I never knew you can make QR codes. Thank you, Gary!👏🏻❤️
Is there a way t save to a designated folder (did that) AND the Clip Board for immediate use?
Yes. In the video I show doing it to a clipboard.
Wow, this is news to me! Didn't know MacOS already HAD a QR Code generator. I used to use a Python script for this.
Thank you!
Thanks bunches
Great video sir. Very useful.
What version of MAC is this that comes with shortcut app?
Cheers.
The current one. Monterey.
Thanks a lot
Does the Shortcuts you demonstrated run on Mac OSs other than Monterey?
No, Shortcuts were introduced with macOS Monterey.
Very interesting. Thank you. How can I print QR labels for my wine collection from a list in Numbers. Label to have QR, plus human readable wine type, vineyard, year. Please.
Not sure how to generate those kinds of QR codes. This is for URLs. You'd need some other kind of QR code generator, and then an app for reading them that would translate the data to the custom human-readable information you have defined.
Sir! Good Video! I have a question, can we Generate Qr from a file? And the other person who will scan it will it see it as PDF? Or something? Please
No, QR codes link to a URL. Put the PDF on a web server or sharing service that gives it a URL, and then create a QR code for that URL.
Hi Gary, just wanted to point out to you that the videos are duplicated in the playlist. Thanks for your great vidz!
is there a way to save them as SVG instead of PNG? they take like 1/10 the size and they are good for illustrator. Thanks for such a useful tip!
Since it is a bitmap, I don't think converting to an SVG would reduce the size. You'd need something that can generate native SVG images. Unless you can find a third-party app to add an action to Shortcuts specifically for that, there's not much you can do. But you can use Resize Image and Convert Image to make it smaller if you like.
@@macmost thanks Gary, I built the shortcut and I’m loving it! I set it to obtain text from clipboard and put the qr back in the clipboard so I can paste it anywhere
You are the best man! I was wondering i you can create a Vcard with shorcuts. Thank you!
I don't think there is an action do that. You probably can with scripting if you are a coder.
@@macmost Thank you man!
Concerned about using apps that generate QR codes from text files, are they safe. Am reading up on it now, thanks
Well with this Shortcut, you don't need to use an app.
sorry you lost me with the short cut screen 1.03. where is this screen, how do I get to it? it just appears on your screen? do I have to buy this? nothing on google for this screen?
Thank you, is there any way to add a logo in the QR code?
Not with this. Not sure how those are made, but probably with special software or designers.
If I create a QR code can I change out the websites it opens to? What I am hoping to do is switch them out. I am a Realtor. I want to make sign riders for my listings saying "Scan for more information" and put my QR code. I would have the QR code go to the MLS Listing. Once the house sells I would want to recycle the sign rider to another house and have the QR code open the MLS Listing for the new house. Can this be done?
The QR code IS the text of the URL to a site. So if you make a QR code for example.com it literally has "example.com" in that QR code. So to do what you want, have the QR code go to a general page on your site where you have links to listings. Then you can change the contents of that page.
Great
I was thinking will this work for specific address location, such as apple and or google maps? With the intent to pinpoint a specific location!
It should. Try "sharing" the location from the map as a link, and then using the link to make a QR code. Test and see.
@@macmost it worked. thank you!!!!
Excellent advice as always, thank you. Is it possible to create a QR code with my logo as a background?
As a background? I suppose as long as there is enough contrast between the background color and the black squares in the code it would be fine. Test it and see.
Thank you. I've found the App now and the QR Code works a treat. The quickest way I've found to do it and save it at the same time is to screenshot the QR code, drop it onto a new page in Pages then add my logo on top (reducing opacity the logo until it works). Saved with a relevant title and it's good to go. @@macmost
@@MandarinLeisure Instead of doing a screenshot (probably doesn't matter in your case, but usually that does reduce quality) just drag and drop the file the Shortcut produces or Copy from Quick. Look. That way you get the actual graphic instead of a screenshot of it.
Excellent advice as always. Thank you 👍@@macmost
Nice! 1. Must I use Safari for this... not seeing an option for other or default browser? 2. How do I get that Shortcuts access on the tool/menu bar? I can't find a setting anywhere to allow that.
You can change the default browser on your iPhone, sure. See support.apple.com/en-us/HT211336 Is that what you mean? You can pin most Shortcuts to the Menu Bar on the Mac. It is in the settings sidebar for any Shortcut.
@@macmost No, I know how to change the default browser, but the Shortcut action only seems to be relative to Safari with no option to use the default browser. Ah, thanks for the tip on settings sidebar... not where I was thinking or looking for it.
@@asraiSOA I think it would take the other browser to offer some Shortcuts actions to do what you want. Easy for them to implement if they have a mind to do it.
@@macmost True. Overall not a biggy. For what I want/need this for, opening up Safari to create the QR is a nonissue really. Really appreciate the video and the replies.
How do you add Shortcuts to your Menu bar like you have?
It is in the setting for each Shortcut. See ruclips.net/video/ebj0VU92YrA/видео.html
I have a QR Code with my contact info.
Actually it is my phone background, as being a Sales Rep it is useful.
Can Contacts QR Codes also be generated this way?
No, only URL ones I think. But try it and see.
@@macmost I tried and it accepts only one info of the contact: URL, or Phone Number, or E-Mail, or... we pick.
It is impossible to use the whole contact though, as one can do on certain sites.
Very very useful still.
Thanks for the comment, and above all for the useful videos!
How can you run a shortcut with a keyboard command? Say, command shift 6 makes a qrcode of the current page I’m surfing?
Yes. It is in the settings for the Shortcut.
Do the QR code’s using the shortcut app last for a lifetime?
Theoretically.
Does the QR code have an expiration date?
No. It is just another way of "writing" a URL. Now if the URL goes to a web page and that web page goes away, then that's a problem. But it would be the same problem if you had the written URL and used that.
This app 'Shortcuts' reminds me of 'Automator'. What are the differences? And what is the same?
Too much to mention here. Automator is Mac-only, allows you to create more kinds of thing (like Folder actions) and has lots of legacy features. Shortcuts will probably replace Automator, but many years from now.
@@macmost Thanks. It's true that you can use Shortcuts also on the iPad. I hope to see more of handy tutorials about Shotcuts, I like the App! Have a nice day.
1:14 When I click run, I keep getting an error popup saying 'There was a problem running the shortcut “Generate QR Code”.' What to do?
Look carefully at your code and try to see where you went wrong.
Yup.
how to put out banks QR code in AW shortcut 😢
Who knew? Oh, Gary knows!!
How do I get a link to an iCloud file so my QR code will open it?
Share it and then get the link. ruclips.net/video/CIXr_MNO874/видео.html
Just tried this. Using latest Monterey. Search for Generate QR code in Shortcuts. Nothing! Any ideas?
Just search for "QR" and see if it comes up then.
@@macmost Yep,got it. Thanks.
My iMac doesn’t bring up the QR Code generator, any other suggestions?
@@mikecureton2234 Make sure you are searching all actions in Shortcuts, not just a subset, like for a specific app.
@@macmost thanks I found it. Your the best!!
What about creating a QR code for your contact information?
On an iPhone a QR code can contain a URL. So you'd have to put your contact information on a web page (or use a service that does something like that) and then just make the URL for your page into a QR code. Then the user would be taken to that page.
@@macmost That was the part I was missing, thank you!
😲
There is a Shortcut int the Gallery for this. no need to build one.
True. But you can customize it once you learn how to build it yourself. The idea here is to learn something, not just to know which button to press.
You really went way to fast to be able to follow when it came to explaining the how part. Even multiple viewings your instructions were still not clear.
And what if we're using chrome on a mac instead of safari?🥲
I just made a way for that too, but in this one we just can't get the name from the webpage and rename it automatically, instead, we'll have to manually type the name, the rest is the same.
@@aveerajsharma Yes, that is how you do it. Well, copy and paste, not type.
