The crazy part is that in China there are only 2-3 weightlifting clubs for amateurs, so basically if you are not a professional you cannot try it anywhere 192 cam tall + 201 cm wingspan = bull snatch all day everyday, if I don't shrug I make contact on my shins
Nowadays there are some commercial gyms has platform for weightlifting or some crossfit style gym doing…..it’s really difficult to operate as a pure weightlifting club for amateurs because most public people think it’s stupid and dangerous. It’s getting better only really recent years (more crossfit/performance gym)
Gabby is a self-taught coach ... not properly trained under the Chinese weightlifting system. Back in 2020, there were already a lot of criticism of Gabby on "Zhihu", the Chinese equiv. of Quora, stating her lack of deep thoughts on the Chinese techniques, she doesn't really understand the fundamentals rationales of the technique principles, causing her to blindly apply the "extend not flex", "no shrug" cues. I have really long arms, longer than Gabriel. I was coached by Tian Tao for 2 hours once, the first instinct he saw my proportions, he said "i'm sorry but you wouldn't have been selected in the county level". Not every Chinese / Asian have long spine, short femur, short arms etc, not to mention people of other ancestries. She could be a good sports therapist tho, just not a weightlifting coach.
She is NOT a professional Chinese athlete, nor has good competition result. So I wouldn’t say “not properly trained”, I would say she’s just an (perhaps below) average amateur. What the important things for her is not the quality of her gym equipments nor experience of members rather than some her designers’ brand bags (like louis vuitton). One guy said she daily using bags worth several thousands of USD (or several TENS thousands in CNY). That’s all about Gabby.😁
@@haanswinn I just want to give an extra comment, Gabby studied FINANCIAL when she was in the UK. Nothing related to sports nor physiotherapy 😅 Perhaps nowadays the weightlifting doesn’t have enough market so she’s trying to rebrand herself as a physiotherapist🥰
10:22 Reageding the shrug in china I was lucky enough to work with two different groups of Chinese coaches and they all suggested shrugging in the clean as the bar passed the knee. I am not sure that their model does or does not allow it. For them it was more that they wanted the bar to get to a particular position (top of the thigh) and this could happen with a little arm bend, shrug or even shrug and arm bend. Just my experience though
I think it was Deng Wei who said "never shrug" in a video she did with Gabby. It was for the snatch and Deng demonstrated that shrugging limits the ability of the arms to do a high snatch pull.
Andrei Aramnau wanted to repeat Zaharevish's lifts. 210 and 250. That was his dream or goal. In 2008 before the Olympics he made attempts at 205 and 245 in nationals. But he did made 210 snatch from blocks and 250 clean from blocks in training.
Very good video. Doing weightlifting has really made me have to grow that confidence with approaching the bar and it has helped me get more of it in life in general. Gabriel I take it you are not a fan of the coach demostrating a perfect airsnatch for their athletes technique?
I find it funny to use the term "ape index," but I learned "wingspan" and "reach" (my preferred term) growing up. Agreed on teaching movement cues, i always thought teaching positions was better. I would like to see how Gabby would alter her coaching for Sub-Saharan Africans like me who normally have longer reaches compared to everyone else (mine is 10cm more than my height, for instance). I thought when i did heavier cleans, my shoulder shrugs were a flaw, but it was more a consequence of trying to hit my mid thigh while keeping my arms straight. Same for triple extension: I've felt that was a consequence of physics and biomechanics
I am not targeting anyone specific but when they post about kids who do well technique, with some old cues that are not working I'm taking the defense of young weightlifters!

It really comes down to what is most important for the lifter/lifters. It’s easy to pick on specific details in isolation (jumping/sliding the feet, shrugging/no shrugging, etc), but without further context, giving a lifter you don’t coach a cue/giving a general cue for everyone to use may not be the best thing to do, as in that post from Gabby. She’s a good coach, but I think that specific video didn’t make much sense.

the first *moment
shes is very narrow minded when it becomes to being a good physiotherapist/sport therapist, i do not recommend her in terms of that either

finally a video from Gabriel. pls give me ur blessing to snatch 100kg before the year ends!
you can do it, good luck

yes do some more debunking of bad weightlifting advice on the web! that's useful ! ;-)

Great video, glad you're uploading!
Glad you enjoy it!
Taylor the technique to individual differences. Not everyone is a "size 9" shoe
@gsincraian Yury Zakharevich 1988. Andrei Aramnau 2008. These are my two favorite Olympic performances. Good picks? How about you?

You can't perform/demonstrate a correct snatch, clean or a jerk without weight. and "perfect" does not exist!
I love this
He’s back 💪😎

in romanian is "armspan" and I think in english is used more ape index!
Rizki and Rahmat from Indonesia have huge shrugs, Pyros Dimas also did a very exaggerated shrug.
When I'm doing no foot or shuffle movement I really try to focus on my toes.
its great to see people giving love to gaby! she is brilliant.
I bet she is!

What did he say about Catalyst Atheltics / Greg Everett? 😮 genuinely curious

What is Gabby's competition result and at what weight class?

That video did frustrate me. I can alway lift more when moving "jumping" as opposed to the no foot.
Gabriel/Gabby collab incoming!!!??? It will break the internet!!!!
sound like the opposite tbh
but to some degree cant you just adjust grip width so that you don't have to shrug?
pretty hard to do that in the clean
@gsincraian Yes I agree. That's what I do, but I certainly see how it has has its' drawbacks

Gabby is a dope button

ohh yeah , I was noticing that as well but thx for let us know
